U21s:
Capital victory for stiffs
Crystal Palace U21s 0 Newcastle U21s 2
Newcastle U21s
deservedly registered their first PL2 success of the season on
Monday night, scoring a goal in each half to see off the challenge
of Crystal Palace at the Gander Green Lane home of National League
Sutton United.
Goals from Anthony Munda and Joe Brayson gave Adam Lawrence his maiden
win in that competition as Magpies coach - and only the efforts of
Eagles custodian Harry Lee prevented a greater margin of victory.
The visitors had their first chance after quarter of an hour when
Alex Murphy broke down the left and Park Seung-soo took the ball on
and shot but the 'keeper dealt with it.
That duo then combined again to better effect in the 20th minute,
Murphy overlapping before providing a precise cross that Munda headed home.
Munda's through ball then gave Brayson a shooting chance from inside
the box 15 minutes later, but he was
unable to get his shot off cleanly and Lee retrieved the
ball.
Brayson shot agonisingly wide, Alfie Harrison's rocket was just
off-target and Lee denied Munda in quick succession as the black and
whites looked to turn their dominance into further goals before the half
time interval.
There were no changes at the break but the hosts began with just ten players, until
Asher Agbinone belatedly appeared on the field 30 seconds after the
kick-off.
In contrast to their lethargic first half display, Palace
significantly upped the pace and began to threaten Max Thompson's
goal for a time.
However Sean Neave's strong run and shot just before the hour mark
gave notice that the visitors remained a threat and he assisted the second goal eight minutes later, neatly setting up Brayson to find the far corner of the net with a perfectly-executed
low effort.
The Magpies almost added a third in the 70th minute but Lee
denied Park after he was played in by Alfie Harrison and several
other chances went begging in the closing stages.
2-0 it stayed though, an impressive collective display giving
Lawrence his third consecutive win in all competitions and a first
three point return in PL2 for United in nine attempts.
This was the first of two league outings this week for the U21s, who
face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Friday.

Spurs (h)
United's third home game in a third
different competition during a nine day period sees them receive Spurs in the Carabao Cup
this Wednesday.
It's an 8pm kick-off, live on ITV1 and Sky Sports and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will be
settled by a penalty shootout.
The winners will take their place in the quarter final draw, which
will be staged after the full time whistle.
Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall
outside the Trent House pub from 5.30pm. Card payments accepted.
ST holders on the Carabao Cup scheme gain access by using their
season ticket as if it were a Premier League game.
The latest Fan Advisory Board minutes include the following
line, suggesting that this change is permanent:
"For future domestic cup fixtures, tickets will be uploaded
directly to season cards."
Carabao Cup scheme members whose initial payment failed or who
were relocated from their usual seat for this tie should have
received an individual ticket.

Entering at the Third Round stage due to their European involvement
like Newcastle, Spurs made it to the last 16 thanks to a routine 3-0
home win over Doncaster Rovers.
The two sides last faced each other in pre-season, a Harvey Barnes
goal giving United a 1-1 draw in the South Korean capital, Seoul on
the night that Son Heung-Min ended his decade-long association with
the Cockerels.
While Newcastle enjoy home comforts for the third successive
game, the visitors complete a trio of away fixtures:
drawing 0-0 in Monaco in the Champions League on Thursday and
winning 3-0 at Everton in the Premier League on Sunday before heading to
the North East.
Spurs will be backed by 4,900 fans - the same allocation that
Bradford City received in the last round. On that basis expect
temporary post-match closures of the walking route from the Leazes
End onto Barrack Road for home fans, as was the case against the
Bantams.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh - second Newcastle game of the season so
far for the Lancashire whistler, following the 1-0 Premier League
home success against Wolves.

Late joy for youngsters
Newcastle U18s 2 Nottingham Forest U18s

A shot from Alex O'Donovan in the fourth minute of time added on
got Newcastles U18s back to winning ways at Little Benton on Saturday.
The young Magpies led at the interval through Jude Cogdon and had
looked set for the three points until Spencer Sutton's leveller in
the first minute of time added on.
However United weren't to be denied, O'Donovan's first league goal
of the season enough to halt a three game losing run for the U18s in
league and cup matches.
Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Durrant, Moran, Old, Miley (Gilligan
82), Waddani (Ferreira 64), O’Donovan, Hutchison, Cogdon (Taylor
73), Seldon (Pinnington 62). Sub n/u: Anderson.

Meanwhile the England U17 squad for a trio of European Championship
qualifiers has been announced, with United represented by George

They'll face hosts Scotland, Lithuania and Sweden.

Rafa returns
Former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is back in football, taking
charge of Greek Super League side Panathinaikos.
Now 65, Rafa has been filling in his time as a football pundit since his
most recent managerial role at Spanish side Celta Vigo came to an end in
March 2024.
And he made a winning start on Sunday, watching his new charges
record a 2-0 home with over Atsteras Tripolis.

TV times (incomplete)
October 15th saw the Premier League announce some changes
to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled
for TV as follows:
Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT
Although fixtures up to the end of January were due that day,
only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 actually appeared.
There's no word on when
the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still
subject to change:
Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)
Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 tbc Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)
The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on
either December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout"
days are December 24th and 25th.
On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both
Boxing Day and New Years Day.

their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Perfect nine
Leeds United U17s 0 Newcastle U17s 2
Wednesday saw Newcastle U17s complete their group stage fixtures
in this season's Premier League Cup, victory at Thorp Arch giving
them three wins from as many games.
Mason Miley shot his side ahead with a first-time effort from inside
the centre circle. Substitute Alfie Seldon then set up Alfie
Hutchison for the clinching second goal; an excellent defensive
performance resulting in a clean sheet.
Team: Dowell, Patterson, Moran, Old, Durrant, Goodbrand,
M.Miley, Gilligan, Pinnington, Hutchison, Ferreira.
Earlier in the group stage, the youngsters won 2-1 at Boro, thanks
to late goals from Hutchison and Seldon.
A 5-3 home conquest of the mackems followed, Seldon's brace adding
to Jake Durrant's opener and two from Jack Patterson.
This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the
last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester
United in 2024.
Also through to the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Leicester
City, Liverpool, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, with the
other two group winners known when the final fixtures take place
later this month.

Update:
Sandro signs on
Wednesday brought media reports that the Sandro Tonali
contract extension said to have been a priority for new Sporting
Director Ross Wilson was in fact done and dusted while one of his
predecessors was still in post.
The 25 year-old Italian midfielder signed a five year deal following
his capture from AC Milan in 2023 and is now revealed to have put
pen to paper on an extension while serving his suspension for
breaking betting regulations.
Tonali is now said to be under contract at SJP until 2029, with a
further 12 month extension exercisable at the club's discretion -
negotiations for both completed before Dan Ashworth left the Magpies
in early 2024.

worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in

ST holders have 24
hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to
buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

27th October |

Born Or Died:
1942 Death of Jack Dowsey,
37.
(1924-26)

1947 Dennis Martin born,
Edinburgh, Scotland. (1977-78)

Winger signed from Kettering Town by West Bromwich
Albion, later joining an upwardly mobile Carlisle United -
where he scored their last goal in Division One.
Martin arrived on Tyneside in October 1977 at a cost
of £40K - one of the few moves soon-to-be-ex-boss
Richard Dinnis was able to make in the transfer
market.
A goal on his debut at Manchester United couldn't
prevent his new side from losing 3-2 and his first
home start against Bristol City saw another goal in a
1-1 draw.
However with the team anchored to the bottom of the
league, Martin dropped out of the picture after
Christmas and by March 1978 had been left for
Mansfield Town.
Finishing his playing career at Kettering via a spell
out in Denmark with Fremad Amager (near Copenhagen).
He then settled in Northamptonshire, working in
insurance.

1962 Death of Willie Bertram,
64.
(1920-21)

1972 Lee Clark born, Wallsend.
(1988-97 & 2005-06, Coach 2006-07)
A product of Wallsend Boys Club,
midfielder Lee captained England at schoolboy and
youth level, netting a hat trick for the former in a
4-1 win over Italy at Wembley in May 1988.
Making his reserve team bow aged 15, Clark was handed
a senior debut by United boss Jim Smith at Bristol
City in September 1990, scoring his first goal at
Wolves two months later.
Regularly watched by a Liverpool scout in his early
games, Clark blossomed as one of a crop of locals
fielded by manager Ossie Ardiles during his brief SJP
reign.
The first of Lee's 11 England U21 caps came against
Czechoslovakia in May 1992 alongside future Magpie
colleagues Andy Cole and Paul Kitson.
Part of the 1992/93 promotion winning side, Clark
was a valuable squad member in the Premier League,
although a perceived lack of scoring prowess saw him
unkindly christened "jigsaw" in the United
dressing room (ie goes to pieces in the box).
And although he scored the first goal of Kenny
Dalglish's toon tenure (in an FA Cup replay win
over Charlton at SJP), Clark wasn't favoured by the
Scot and joined the mackems for £2.75m - their record
signing at the time.
Helping them return to the top flight in his
second season there, Lee's trip to support Newcastle
at Wembley Stadium in May 1999 was memorable
- and not for the result, a 0-2 loss for the Toon.
Donning a T-shirt emblazoned with the motto "sad
mackem b*stards" and then posing for photos
made a return to wearside unwise and he joined Fulham
in a £3m deal.
In almost six years as a Cottager, Clark was a popular
figure on and off the field, but was afflicted with
Achilles injuries in both legs, which restricted his
availability.
Released by Fulham in 2005, Lee was then spotted at
Newcastle's pre-season training sessions, later
rejoining the Magpies on a month-to-month contract.
Regaining fitness, he returned to the side
and added one more goal to his Toon tally - a
late leveller at home to Boro that granted Graeme Souness
a stay of execution.
What would be his final appearance
came from the bench in the closing stages of a 1-0 home win over Chelsea during
May 2006.
Remaining at the club as part of Glenn Roeder's
coaching staff, Clark replaced Tommy Craig as reserve
boss when Roeder was appointed permanently.
Retaining that role under successor Sam Allardyce,
Clark was reunited with Glenn Roeder in November 2007,
becoming his assistant at Norwich City.
After just over a year at Carrow Road however, Clark
became a manager in his own right with Huddersfield
Town - enlisting Terry McDermott to assist him.
2009 saw his Terriers side face Newcastle
in a home friendly, just weeks before the two sides
met again at SJP in the League Cup - something that
obviously gave him great pride, although attempting
to downplay matters to the press.
The 2010/11 season saw Clark guide Town to third in the league and victory over Bournemouth to reach
the play-off final, losing 0-3 to Peterborough at Old
Trafford.
However, he continued their unbeaten league record
into the following campaign and celebrated his 39th
birthday in the week that the Terriers made it 40
games.
That run eventually spanned 43 games but the Terriers
hierarchy were nervous about another promotion
campaign faltering, after Clark had convinced them not
to sell top scorer Jordan Rhodes.
A dispute with his Chairman saw Lee exit in
early 2012 but he was soon back in football, replacing Chris Hughton at Birmingham City when he
joined Norwich City.
Bringing in familiar faces Terry McDermott, Steve
Watson and Derek Fazackerley to assist him at St.
Andrew's, Lee persuaded Peter Lovenkrands to join
following his release by Newcastle that summer.
Adding SJP old boy Darren Ambrose, Clark returned
to his former club to loan Shane Ferguson, City ultimately ending up 12th.
Fergie then returned to City the following season as
Lee survived Birmingham's poorest start to a season
in 25 years.
City avoided relegation in dramatic fashion but Clark
was sacked in October 2014 with Blues once again in
relegation trouble.
He then surprisingly swapped one disaster area for another,
joining Championship crisis club, Blackpool. That ended in an inevitable relegation for the Seasiders and Clark's
exit from Bloomfield Road in May 2015.
Appointed Kilmarnock manager in February 2016, he led them to
play-off success over Falkirk, preserving their SPL status.
A year to the day that he arrived at Rugby Park though
Clark was gone, leaving to take charge of League One
strugglers Bury.
Three days after his 45th birthday his time at Gigg
Lane was over, sacked after four straight defeats.
Appointed manager of Blyth Spartans in June 2019, he
stood down the following March.
Later becoming Director of Football at ambitious
local league side Newcastle Blue Star, Clark also
had a brief stint managing Sudanese side Al-Merreikh
SC.
Clark's son Bobby followed in his footsteps by
joining United's Academy, but was tempted by Liverpool in 2021 aged 16 - making his Premier
League bow a year later.
He signed for Red Bull Salzburg in 2024 but by 2025
was back in England, on loan at Derby County.

1982 Carl Heiniger born,
Belfast, Northern Ireland. (1997-2002)

Northern Ireland youth international midfielder Carl
was with Manchester United from the age of six until
14 before making the move to Tyneside.
Playing junior and reserve level football for
Newcastle, Heiniger was released in 2002 and had a
trial with Bradford City before enrolling at Bath
Unversity.
Combining his studies with playing for Team Bath,
Carl and his side gained national recognition as the
first University team since Oxford University in
1880 to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.
Bath lost 2-4 to Mansfield Town in a tie shown live
by the BBC in November 2002, Heiniger netting
with a memorable strike.
A move to German side Hessen Kassel didn't work out
and after a trial with Darlington, Heiny went on a
grand tour of Northern non-league clubs,
including: Bishop Auckland, Durham City, Seaham Red
Star, Newcastle Benfield, Newcastle Blue Star,
Workington, Barrow, Lancaster City, Gateshead, York
City, Whitby Town, Team Northumbria, Dunston Fed,
Consett, Nissan, Morpeth Town and Durham City.
Persistent injury problems forced Carl out of
football, but he can still be found playing golf at
Beamish Park.
1986 Matty Pattison born,
Johannesburg, South Africa. (2004-08)

Midfielder who joined Newcastle's
Academy at the age of 14 and impressed at youth an
reserve level, despite a lack of pace.
His first team debut came in as sub in a pre -season
friendly at Celtic in 2004, with our squad weakened by
an eye infection - just days before, he'd been on the
bench for the reserves at Shildon.
However, he then suffered a cruciate injury in training
and missed most of that season, before returning to
fitness - and then falling victim to the same injury
in a youth game.
Another period of rehab followed before he made his
senior competitive debut at home to Everton as a late
sub, in February 2006.
The United manager in charge that day was Glenn
Roeder, and after being appointed as Norwich City
manager, he returned to SJP and took 'Patter' on loan
in December 2007.
A move to Carrow Road was made permanent the following
year and became a Canaries regular, scoring
his first senior goal against Nottingham Forest in
November 2008.
Matty had made the headlines earlier that year when
arrested for drink driving, reportedly waking up after
a heavy night and believing he was late for training,
jumping into his car while still over the limit.
Unfortunately it was Sunday morning - and although
City weren't training, the Norfolk Constabulary were
on duty and spotted the player driving erratically.
August 2009 saw the player leave Norwich, moving to
Mamelodi Sundowns in his native South Africa, for an
undisclosed fee.
When questioned about the move, Matty admitted that he
was motivated by the chance of being selected for
South African World Cup squad and believed he'd stand
a better chance as a home-based player.
However, that failed to happen and despite one
international call-up - against Swaziland in January
2010 - Pattison failed to make it into his nation's
Finals squad.
By early 2012 Matty was looking for a new club and was
reported to be on trial with Dynamo Moscow before turning up at Leeds United and netting
during a practice game against Newcastle Reserves.
No contract offer was forthcoming at Elland Road
however and after a further stint at Hibernian, Pattison returned to South Africa and subsequently
appeared for both Santos and Bidvest Wits.
A further attempt at restarting his career in England
then saw Matty appear for MK Dons on trial in 2014.
That didn't work out but by October he'd teamed up
with former SJP colleagues Adam Bartlett, Craig
Baxter, Carl Finnigan and Lewis Guy at
Gateshead.
Failing to inspire a promotion push from the
Tynesiders, Pattison left the International Stadium in
the summer of 2016 and was signed by Blyth Spartans.
Joining South
Shields in May 2017, he later played and coached at Whickham becoming Gateshead's
Academy coach for a time before resuming backroom
duties at South Shields.

capture while showing a replay of a previous effort.
Newcastle led 2-0 on aggregate when Jeff Clarke scored in
the second minute but Leeds scored twice in the 90 minutes
to level on aggregate and then twice more in extra-time.

After a 5-5 draw at QPR in their previous venture South a month earlier, United shared the points in
Hertfordshire.
That was due in part
to a penalty save from Kevin Carr, who foiled Nigel
Callaghan.
Striker George Reilly was in the Hornets side for this
game, but had moved to Newcastle by the time the teams met
later in the season.

2009 NUFC club statement:
Newcastle United are delighted to announce that Chris Hughton has been named the permanent manager of the Club, his contract will run until the end of the 2010/11 season.
Derek Llambias, Managing Director of Newcastle United, said:
"We are delighted that Chris has accepted the post of full time manager. He has done a terrific job this season and we wish him every success for the rest of this season and beyond. He will continue to receive our full backing and support."
And Chris Hughton added:
"It is a very proud day for me to be named as the manager of this magnificent football club. I thank Mike and Derek for their support and will be doing everything in my power to get the Club back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.
"Having the unequivocal backing of the players has helped me enormously and I would also like to thank Colin
Calderwood, Paul Barron and the rest of the backroom staff who have never been anything but tremendously supportive to me this season."
The statement continued:
"At the same time the Club has confirmed that it has been withdrawn from sale and is no longer on the market."

Following the game, the club released this unambiguous
statement: "Chris
(Hughton) is our manager, and he'll
remain our manager, and we will renegotiate his contract at the end of the
year."
We're not sure which year they were referring to, but it
all ended for Chris less than six weeks later, following a 1-3

A stuttering display from his side saw Alan

Steven Fletcher headed home after an early corner wasn't
dealt with, but after Mathieu Debuchy levelled with his
first goal for the club, disaster seemed to have been
averted.
However, a disputed free kick on the halfway line
proved to our undoing, future Magpie Jack Colback involved
in the move that saw loan striker Fabio Borini beat Tim Krul to give Gus Poyet his first win.

laxity.
Martin Dubravka's ill-advised flap
allowed Casto Otto to volley in, before Longstaff was dismissed
for a high challenge on Ruben Neves - whose histrionics swayed referee Kevin

Cole Palmer's sublime pass began the move that led to
Chelsea's opener, before an equally admirable team move
ended with Alexander Isak scoring his second goal of the
season.
However Palmer struck just 75 seconds after the interval
and United were unable to find a second leveller - a VAR
review in the closing seconds ruling out a Chelsea
penalty that had been awarded onfield.
