Carabao Cup:
Spurs (h)

United's third home game in a third different competition during a nine day period sees them receive Spurs in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on ITV1 and Sky Sports and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, the tie will be settled by a penalty shootout.

The winners will take their place in the quarter final draw, which will be staged after the full time whistle.

Hat sellers Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House pub from 5.30pm. Card payments accepted.

ST holders on the Carabao Cup scheme gain access by using their season ticket as if it were a Premier League game.

The latest Fan Advisory Board minutes include the following line, suggesting that this change is permanent:

"For future domestic cup fixtures, tickets will be uploaded directly to season cards."

Carabao Cup scheme members whose initial payment failed or who were relocated from their usual seat for this tie  should have received an individual ticket.

Team:
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Sven Botman was a doubt for this tie.

Of the trio of players ruled out of Wednesday, Lewis Hall could feature at West Ham on Sunday, Tino Livramento is pencilled in for the Manchester City game in late November and Yoane Wissa is predicted to make his club debut at some point between those two games.

Coral rate this tie as follows:

NUFC win 5/6
The draw 29/10
THFC win 3/1

New customers will receive a £20 bet when staking £5 (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

THFC: Yves Bissouma, Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Koto Takai are all out, with
Cristian Romero, Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie unlikely to feature on Tyneside.

Entering at the Third Round stage due to their European involvement like Newcastle, Spurs made it to the last 16 thanks to a routine 3-0 home win over Doncaster Rovers.

The two sides last faced each other in pre-season, a Harvey Barnes goal giving United a 1-1 draw in the South Korean capital, Seoul on the night that Son Heung-Min ended his decade-long association with the Cockerels.

While Newcastle enjoy home comforts for the third successive game, the visitors complete a trio of away fixtures: drawing 0-0 in Monaco in the Champions League on Thursday and winning 3-0 at Everton in the Premier League on Sunday before heading to the North East.

Spurs will be backed by 4,900 fans - the same allocation that Bradford City received in the last round. On that basis expect temporary post-match closures of the walking route from the Leazes End onto Barrack Road for home fans, as was the case against the Bantams.

Referee: Chris Kavanagh - second Newcastle game of the season so far for the Lancashire whistler, following the 1-0 Premier League home success against Wolves.

Toon Teens tussle

Tuesday afternoon saw England and Scotland U17s meet in a European Championship qualifying tie at Airdrie, with Newcastle representation in both sides.

The visitors included United goalkeeper George Mair and were captained by midfielder Sam Alabi, while defender Oliver Goodbrand wore the armband for the Scots.

Goodbrand's side were 1-0 winners thanks to a goal in second half added time, both he and Mair playing for the entire game while Alabi completed 64 minutes.

Both sides return to action on Thursday; England facing Lithuania before Scotland take on Sweden. The third and final set of games on Monday then sees England against Sweden and Scotland against Lithuania.

Elsewhere, United's Lesecond Yeutembip is in the England U16 squad for the Football Federations Cup in Turkey.

The 15 year-old defender is called up for games in Antalya against Wales hosts Turkey on Saturday and Portugal.

U21s:
Capital victory for stiffs

Crystal Palace U21s  0  Newcastle U21s  2

Newcastle U21s deservedly registered their first PL2 success of the season on Monday night, scoring a goal in each half to see off the challenge of Crystal Palace at the Gander Green Lane home of National League Sutton United.

Goals from Anthony Munda and Joe Brayson gave Adam Lawrence his maiden win in that competition as Magpies coach - and only the efforts of Eagles custodian Harry Lee prevented a greater margin of victory.

The visitors had their first chance after quarter of an hour when Alex Murphy broke down the left and Park Seung-soo took the ball on and shot but the 'keeper dealt with it.

That duo then combined again to better effect in the 20th minute, Murphy overlapping before providing a precise cross that Munda headed home.

Munda's through ball then gave Brayson a shooting chance from inside the box 15 minutes later, but he was unable to get his shot off cleanly and Lee retrieved the ball.

Brayson shot agonisingly wide, Alfie Harrison's rocket was just off-target and Lee denied Munda in quick succession as the black and whites looked to turn their dominance into further goals before the half time interval.

There were no changes at the break but the hosts began with just ten players, until Asher Agbinone belatedly appeared on the field 30 seconds after the kick-off.

In contrast to their lethargic first half display, Palace significantly upped the pace and began to threaten Max Thompson's goal for a time.

However Sean Neave's strong run and shot just before the hour mark gave notice that the visitors remained a threat and he assisted the second goal eight minutes later, neatly setting up Brayson to find the far corner of the net with a perfectly-executed low effort.

The Magpies almost added a third in the 70th minute but Lee denied Park after he was played in by Alfie Harrison and several other chances went begging in the closing stages.

2-0 it stayed though, an impressive collective display giving Lawrence his third consecutive win in all competitions and a first three point return in PL2 for United in nine attempts.

This was the first of two league outings this week for the U21s, who face Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Friday.

U18s:
Late joy for youngsters

Newcastle U18s  2  Nottingham Forest U18s  1

A shot from Alex O'Donovan in the fourth minute of time added on got Newcastles U18s back to winning ways at Little Benton on Saturday.

The young Magpies led at the interval through Jude Cogdon and had looked set for the three points until Spencer Sutton's leveller in the first minute of time added on.

However United weren't to be denied, O'Donovan's first league goal of the season enough to halt a three game losing run for the U18s in league and cup matches.

Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Durrant, Moran, Old, Miley (Gilligan 82), Waddani (Ferreira 64), O’Donovan, Hutchison, Cogdon (Taylor 73), Seldon (Pinnington 62). Sub n/u: Anderson.

Old boy:
Rafa returns

Former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is back in football, taking charge of Greek Super League side Panathinaikos.

Now 65, Rafa has been filling in his time as a football pundit since his most recent managerial role at Spanish side Celta Vigo came to an end in March 2024.

And he made a winning start on Sunday, watching his new charges record a 2-0 home with over Atsteras Tripolis.

Premier League:
TV times (incomplete)

October 15th saw the Premier League announce some changes to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled for TV as follows:

Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT

Although fixtures up to the end of January were due that day, only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 actually appeared.

There's no word on when the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still subject to change:

Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)

Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 tbc Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)

The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on either December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout" days are December 24th and 25th.

On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both Boxing Day and New Years Day - latest newspaper claims suggesting that one game will be on the 26th.

* Aston Villa's visit to SJP will move from Sat 24.01.2026 due to their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Leeds United U17s  0  Newcastle U17s  2

Wednesday saw Newcastle U17s complete their group stage fixtures in this season's Premier League Cup, victory at Thorp Arch giving them three wins from as many games.

Mason Miley shot his side ahead with a first-time effort from inside the centre circle. Substitute Alfie Seldon then set up Alfie Hutchison for the clinching second goal; an excellent defensive performance resulting in a clean sheet.

Team: Dowell, Patterson, Moran, Old, Durrant, Goodbrand, M.Miley, Gilligan, Pinnington, Hutchison, Ferreira.

Earlier in the group stage, the youngsters won 2-1 at Boro, thanks to late goals from Hutchison and Seldon.

A 5-3 home conquest of the mackems followed, Seldon's brace adding to Jake Durrant's opener and two from Jack Patterson.

This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester United in 2024.

Also through to the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham. News of the final qualifier is tbc.

Update:
Sandro signs on

Wednesday brought media reports that the Sandro Tonali contract extension said to have been a priority for new Sporting Director Ross Wilson was in fact done and dusted while one of his predecessors was still in post.

The 25 year-old Italian midfielder signed a five year deal following his capture from AC Milan in 2023 and is now revealed to have put pen to paper on an extension while serving his suspension for breaking betting regulations.

Tonali is now said to be under contract at SJP until 2029, with a further 12 month extension exercisable at the club's discretion - negotiations for both completed before Dan Ashworth left the Magpies in early 2024.

The Hammers have lost all four of their PL home games so far this season - and the final one last season - the first time since 1931 they've suffered that ignominy.

Referee: Robert Jones - second Toon posting of the season for the Merseyside whistler, having taken charge of our 0-0 draw at Bournemouth and ignored a blatant shirt pull in the box on Nick Woltemade. That doesn't inspire confidence...

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

On This Day in History
28th October

Born Or Died:

1920 Dick Burke born, Ashton, Manchester. (1946-47)

Defender signed from Blackpool in December 1946, having joined the Seasiders from Droylesden in 1939 but losing a significant chunk of his career to World War II.

Dick actually played against Blackpool as a war guest of Liverpool, netting during a 1-1 draw at Bloomfield Road in April 1946.

An occasional starter at right back for United, Burke debuted in a 3-2 home win over Plymouth Argyle within days of his arrival on Tyneside.

Losing his place to Bobby Cowell, Dick moved on to Carlisle United in August 1947 and later played for his hometown club Ashton United, He passed away in 2004.

1970 Death of Harry Ware, 59.
(1935-37)

1974 Peter Kirkham born, Newcastle
(1991-93)

Right winger courted by several clubs as a schoolboy, joining Ipswich Town after playing for Chelsea, Wimbledon and Sheffield United.

Joining Newcastle as an apprentice in July 1991 after playing for them in the Northern Intermediate League the previous season, Peter debuted for the reserves against Manchester United in October 1992.

Released by the Magpies the following year, Peter faced his former club in the colours of hometown club Hebburn as a trialist before signing for Darlington.

Two years as a Quaker were then followed by a stint with Swedish side Koping FF.

Returning to the UK, Kirkham played for Gretna, Blyth Spartans, South Shields, Darlington, Grantham Town, Chester-le -Street, Dunston Federation Brewery, Jarrow Roofing, Hebburn, Consett, Whitley Bay, Washington and Jarrow once again.

Serving Jarrow as both manager and assistant manager, he was owner and Managing Director of the Durham-based company, Property Dream.

1980 Alan Smith born, Rothwell.
(2007-12)

Although signed as a forward and scoring in a pre-season home win over Sampdoria, Alan Smith became a deep-lying midfielder and club captain of Newcastle.

A controversial move from Leeds United to Manchester United in 2004 was followed by career-threatening injuries, which restricted his outings for Fergie's side and saw him available when the Magpies made an enquiry in August 2007.

Signed for £6m, Smith's first season saw him a regular choice under Sam Allardyce but used more as a substitute by Kevin Keegan - despite adding little to the side.

A pre-season Achilles injury then ruled him out until early 2009, by which time KK had departed and Joe Kinnear had both come and gone from the manager's office.

Making his comeback in the reserves, Smith played in central midfield and remained there when back in the first team - with Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton and Danny Guthrie all missing.

Dropping down a league saw him linked with various Premier League clubs - most notably Everton - but he remained at Newcastle and the absence of Nicky Butt from the season opener at West Bromwich Albion saw Smith take the armband.

And after playing his part in promotion, Alan was in the starting XI as his side returned to the top flight with defeat at his former home of Old Trafford.

He appeared a dozen more times until an ankle injury in the 1-1 wear-Tyne game ruled him out for the rest of the season - although he appeared as a substitute for a "farewell" appearance in the home game against West Bromwich Albion.

At the time United were coasting at 3-1 up but eventually drew 3-3, costing them three league places and over £1m in prize money.

Two more brief appearances the following season eventually saw him move to MK Dons on loan and the move was made permanent ahead of the 2012/13 season.

Summer 2014 then saw Smith agree a dual coaching/playing role with Notts County, signing a 12 month deal at Meadow Lane.

That was subsequently extended and by his 37 birthday in 2017, Alan was still playing with former colleague Shola Ameobi and Nolan in charge.

He was released by County in 2018 and like fellow Yorkshireman David Batty, has mostly kept away from football since.

1984(?!) Obafemi Martins born, Lagos, Nigeria. (2006-09)

Striker purchased from Inter Milan at a cost of over £10m to succeed Alan Shearer in the United number nine shirt.

And although he scored some spectacular goals - notably one howitzer-like strike in a 3-2 win at Spurs in January 2007 - far too often he was missing in action or just AWOL.

89 starts (plus 15 substitute outings) in all competitions brought the diminutive Nigerian 35 goals - the first in a 2-0 win at West Ham early in the 2006/07 season.

That first season ended though with Martins wandering round Watford in his flip flops, having declared himself unfit to play in the final game of the season - shortly after learning that caretaker boss Nigel Pearson intended to name him on the bench.

International wrangles, unexpected trips to his former Milan home plus niggling injuries and ailments all got in the way of his playing at times - while he was also quite partial to the Tyneside nightlife.

The final weeks of what became our relegation season saw a typical mixture of the good and bad from Oba - scoring at home to the smoggies and hitting the post on that fateful day against Fulham, but also declaring a mysterious groin injury on the day of the Stoke away game, to the obvious annoyance of United boss, Alan Shearer.

With relegation confirmed and departure from SJP seemingly inevitable, Martins had a hernia op and the media began to speculate on his next club. Inter Milan, Fiorentina, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Fulham, Spurs, the mackems, Stoke City, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Lyon and Seville were all linked.

With no deal in sight though and pre-season training underway, Martins appeared for 45 minutes of the infamous 1-6 friendly loss at Leyton Orient - 24 hours after news broke of strong transfer interest from Wolfsburg.

The following Wednesday saw Newcastle face Leeds United in a kickabout at SJP, with Martins absent and confirmed to be in negotiations with the Bundesliga club.

A deal claimed to be up to £10m in the press was quickly concluded and the player netted against Cologne on his debut as a substitute.

Martins was crocked again by November though, appearing intermittently through the rest of the season and scoring his final Wolfsburg goal against Rubin Kazan in the Champions League during March 2010.

With new Wolfsburg boss Steve McClaren apparently happy to sell him, Russians Kazan bid for Martins four months later after he had played in a dreadful World Cup Final campaign for Nigeria.

He unexpected returned to England when loaned to Birmingham City in January 2011 and scored the winning goal in the Carling Cup Final against Arsenal before injury saw him return to Russia.

In September 2012 Martins signed a two year deal with La Liga side Levante after securing his release from Rubin, marking his debut in Spain with the winner against Real Sociedad.

Within six months though he'd been lured to the USA, joining MLS side Seattle Sounders and scoring eight times in his first season.

A second campaign at Seattle harvested 17 goals and a lucrative new three year deal - not bad for a 29 year-old and even better for a thirty something...

Martins continued his goal form at the Sounders and grabbed his 40th in their colours on the eve of whatever birthday he celebrated in October 2015.

By February 2016 though, he'd packed his bags again and signed for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.

That stint ended in April 2018 though, when a serious knee injury sidelined him - and Shanghai opted not to extend his contract, releasing him shortly afterwards.

Returning to fitness, Oba improbably rejoined Shanghai Shenhua in July 2020 but that was a short-term liaison.

A three month stint at fellow Chinese Super League side Wuhan Zall ended in late 2020, since when Martins has lived in his native Lagos and embarked on a number of business ventures.

1997 Lewis Suddick born, Newcastle
(2013-16)

Academy midfielder/full back and grandson of former Magpies favourite Alan Suddick, Lewis was in United's 2013 Milk Cup squad and agreed a scholarship the following year.

Blooded at U21 level when a young Magpies XI faced Northern League side Consett in a friendly in October 2014 - aged just 16.

A competitive debut for Peter Beardsley's side then came in a 1-3 loss to Morpeth Town in the Northumberland Senior Cup six months later - unfortunately turning the ball home to register an own goal.

July 2015 then saw an unexpected senior bow for Suddick, coming off the bench for the closing 20 minutes of a 1-2 pre-season friendly defeat at League Two York City.

Spending the first part of that season back in the U18 side, an operation in January 2016 sidelined him for some time and he was released at the end of the season.

Lewis then relocated to the USA and enrolled at Butler University in Indianapolis, playing for their Bulldogs soccer side.

Returning to the North East in 2018, he played for North Shields, Whitley Bay, Hebburn Town, Whitby Town, Bishop Auckland, Ashington, followed by second stints at Whitley Bay, Ashington and North Shields .
