Carabao Cup:
More home comforts
Newcastle's reward for defeating Spurs in the Fourth
Round of the Carabao Cup is a home tie in the last eight
against a Fulham side beaten 2-1 at St. James' Park earlier this
month:
Quarter-final draw:
Arsenal v Crystal Palace
Cardiff City v Chelsea
Manchester City v Brentford
Newcastle v Fulham
Quarter-final ties are scheduled to take place in the week
commencing Monday December 15th, coming between our Sunday
PL visit to the mackems and the PL home game against Chelsea
the following Saturday lunchtime.
This is the third time that the Magpies and the Cottagers
have been paired in the League Cup, Newcastle 3-0 winners at
Gallowgate in the Fourth Round during January 1975.
Fulham then gained their revenge in October 1982, winning
both legs of a Second Round tie: 2-1 on Tyneside and then
2-0 on the banks of the Thames.
This is Newcastle's 13th appearance in the
quarter-finals and the fourth successive season that Eddie
Howe has guided his side into the last eight:
1974/75 Chester City (a) lost 0-1 (1st replay)
1975/76 Notts County (h) won 1-0
1995/96 Arsenal (a) lost 0-2
1997/98 Liverpool (a) lost 0-2
2001/02 Chelsea (a) lost 0-1
2006/07 Chelsea (h) lost 0-1
2014/15 Spurs (a) lost 0-4
2016/17 Hull City (a) drew 1-1 (lost 1-3 on pens)
2020/21 Brentford (a) lost 0-1
2022/23 Leicester City (h) won 2-0
2023/24 Chelsea (a) drew 1-1 (lost 2-4 on pens)
2024/25 Brentford (h) won 3-1
2025/26 Fulham (h)
Carabao Cup:
Cockerels
get knotted
Newcastle 2 Spurs 0

Goals from Fabian
Schar and Nick Woltemade propelled Newcastle into the last eight of
the Carabao Cup as Spurs were twice caught napping at Gallowgate on
Wednesday.
Jacob Ramsey and Harvey Barnes had come close but the tie was
scoreless midway through the opening half when the hosts won a
corner that Sandro Tonali shaped to take.
However, the flag kick was delayed while Djed Spence fiddled with
his bootlaces, the visiting defender belatedly trotting into the
area as the ball came over from the right and was headed straight
into the Leazes End by Schar.
An outraged Richarlison led prolonged protests that his side weren't
ready, but referee Chris Kavanagh was unmoved and the goal stood -
the Spurs striker lucky to only be booked for manhandling the
referee and knocking Joe Willock to the ground.
That fuelled a period of Spurs pressure; Richarlison twice coming
close to connecting with dangerous low crosses pinged in from the
right flank after flowing moves upfield.
The hosts also came close themselves; good work from Tonali and
Malick Thiaw setting up Barnes for an acrobatic shot from close
range that shaved the Spurs crossbar.
United should have added a second soon after the restart when Joe
Willock wasted his header from close in, but the recalled midfielder
capped an encouraging display when pinging in a centre that
Woltemade reached ahead of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and nodded into
the net.
Two timely stops from Aaron Ramsdale then preserved Newcastle's two
goal advantage; first brilliantly denying Pape Sarr and then
Richarlison once again.
The threat from the North Londoners diminished though, as what
became a Tonali master class saw the Italian pop up at both ends of
the field to great effect.
Spurs were also undermined by repeatedly hitting passes out of play
amid ironic cheers from home fans and choruses of "Tottenham
Hotspur, it's happened again", as United closed in on their
fourth successive home win over them.
The introduction of messrs Trippier, Osula and Joelinton livened up
the Magpies - Joelinton soon tussling with Mohammed Kudus and
restrained by colleagues.
The lack of VAR saw only yellows shown although hands were raised
and when Kudus illegally prevented a counter-attack moments later,
Kavanagh ignored strong shouts for a second booking - again a VAR
opinion may have differed.
There were to be no more home goals, the nearest to a third when a
first time effort from Anthony Elanga cannoned off Kevin Danso and
just past his own post.
Despite retaining just three of the side that had lined up against
Fulham at the weekend, a third home win in nine days was richly
deserved and underlined our strength in depth, even without two full
backs and Yoane Wissa.
Spurs may have changed their manager since the last time they
visited, but aside from the profligate Richarlison never looked like
ending United's hopes of a Wembley return.
They still don't like it up north - let's see whether Thomas Frank's
side have any more appetite for the fight when the teams meet here
in the Premier League in December.

home success against Wolves.

Eddie Howe said:
"Really pleased because I think when you make the changes we
did you hope to see a performance that's in line with our identity
and our expectations.
"I thought the pressing early on in the game and general attitude of
the players was very good.
"I think with the way we work we like to think regardless of
the changes we make they deliver a Newcastle performance in line
with our expectations.
"It's most important that our attitude is right from minute one and
the will to win that you need and we had. Individually I thought
there were some really good performances, collectively we were
strong."
On which competitions he is targeting:
"There is no priority. We just want to win and win consistently.
That's such a healthy thing for the group to feel.
"The acid test was this game for that because of the changes
we made. Was our mentality and mindset going to waver? The most
pleasing thing for me was that it didn't.
"We enjoy the competition. We take it seriously. We want to do well.
It's up to the players and how they take to the pitch.
"We made a number of changes. There is always a slight doubt
about how that team will knit together.
"But, from minute one, we looked in a really good place.
Athletically we were excellent. A lot of those players haven't
played regularly so that's testament to their professionalism and
how they have looked after themselves between games and they got
their rewards."
On scoring from a corner:
"something we've worked really hard on lately in our game and I
think we have the height and power to cause teams problems.
"It's great to see a great delivery from Sandro (Tonali) and
Fabian's (Schar) header was top class. He's always had a goal
in him, he's always had that creative side of him game and it was a
great moment for him."
Fourth Round results:
Tue 28.10.2025:
Grimsby Town 0-5 Brentford

Toon Teens tussle
Tuesday afternoon saw England
and Scotland U17s meet in a European Championship qualifying tie at
Airdrie, with Newcastle representation in both sides.
The visitors included United goalkeeper George
Mair and were captained by midfielder Sam Alabi,
while defender Oliver Goodbrand wore the armband for the
Scots.
Goodbrand's side were 1-0 winners thanks to a goal in second half
added time, both he and Mair playing for the entire game while Alabi
completed 64 minutes.
Both sides return to action on Thursday; England facing Lithuania
before Scotland take on Sweden. The third and final set of games on
Monday then sees England against Sweden and Scotland against
Lithuania.
Elsewhere, United's Lesecond Yeutembip is in the
England U16 squad for the Football Federations Cup in Turkey.
The 15 year-old defender is called up for games in Antalya
against Wales hosts Turkey on Saturday and Portugal.

A shot from Alex O'Donovan in the fourth minute of time added on
got Newcastles U18s back to winning ways at Little Benton on Saturday.
The young Magpies led at the interval through Jude Cogdon and had
looked set for the three points until Spencer Sutton's leveller in
the first minute of time added on.
However United weren't to be denied, O'Donovan's first league goal
of the season enough to halt a three game losing run for the U18s in
league and cup matches.
Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Durrant, Moran, Old, Miley (Gilligan

Rafa returns
Former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is back in football, taking
charge of Greek Super League side Panathinaikos.
Now 65, Rafa has been filling in his time as a football pundit since his
most recent managerial role at Spanish side Celta Vigo came to an end in
March 2024.
And he made a winning start on Sunday, watching his new charges
record a 2-0 home with over Atsteras Tripolis.

TV times (incomplete)
October 15th saw the Premier League announce some changes
to the December fixture list, with three Newcastle games rescheduled
for TV as follows:
Tue 02.12.2025 Spurs (h) 8.15pm Sky
Sat 06.12.2025 Burnley (h) 3pm (no live TV)
Sun 14.12.2025 mackems (a) 2pm Sky
Sat 20.12.2025 Chelsea (h) 12.30pm TNT
Although fixtures up to the end of January were due that day,
only those up to Mon 22.12.2025 actually appeared.
There's no word on when
the remainder will be released, leaving seven Newcastle games still
subject to change:
Sat 27.12.2025 tbc Manchester United (a)
Tue 30.12.2025 tbc Burnley (a)
Sat 03.01.2026 tbc Crystal Palace (h)
Wed 07.01.2026 tbc Leeds United (h)
Sat 17.01.2026 tbc Wolves (a)
Sat 24.01.2026 tbc Aston Villa (h)*
Sat 31.01.2026 tbc Liverpool (a)
The initial fixture release in June didn't list any games on
either December 26th or January 1st, but the PL's only "blackout"
days are December 24th and 25th.
On that basis, some PL fixtures are liable to be played on both
Boxing Day and New Years Day - latest newspaper claims suggesting
that one game will be on the 26th.
* Aston Villa's visit to SJP will move from Sat 24.01.2026 due to
their Europa League tie on Thu 22.01.2026.

Wednesday saw Newcastle U17s complete their group stage fixtures
in this season's Premier League Cup, victory at Thorp Arch giving
them three wins from as many games.
Mason Miley shot his side ahead with a first-time effort from inside
the centre circle. Substitute Alfie Seldon then set up Alfie
Hutchison for the clinching second goal; an excellent defensive
performance resulting in a clean sheet.
Team: Dowell, Patterson, Moran, Old, Durrant, Goodbrand,
M.Miley, Gilligan, Pinnington, Hutchison, Ferreira.
Earlier in the group stage, the youngsters won 2-1 at Boro, thanks
to late goals from Hutchison and Seldon.
A 5-3 home conquest of the mackems followed, Seldon's brace adding
to Jake Durrant's opener and two from Jack Patterson.
This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the
last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester
United in 2024.
Also through to the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Leicester
City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.
News of the final qualifier is tbc.

ST holders have 24

buy.
Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications
received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a
ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.
The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty
point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above
that point division get a couple of hours head start.
Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase
window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log
on and complete your purchase regardless.
Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered
to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Born Or Died:
1903 William Gillespie born, Fife,
Scotland.
(1927-29)

Full back who arrived from East Fife at a cost of
£1,500 but failed to make an impact at SJP, joining
Bristol Rovers on a free transfer at the end of the
1928/29 season.
Gillespie subsequently returned to his native Scotland, first
with St.Mirren and then back at East Fife.

1932
John McGuigan born, Motherwell, Scotland. (1958-62)
Inside forward who had appeared in the
Scottish League for St.Mirren before moving to England
with Southend United in 1955.
United parted with £2,250 plus Bill Punton to the
Shrimpers ahead of the 1958/59 season for John and got
off to a good start, netting on his debut in a 2-0
home win over Everton.
However the departure of manager Charlie Mitten spelt
the end for John and he was never selected by Joe
Harvey before leaving in January 1962 for Scunthorpe -
Barrie Thomas coming in the opposite direction.
John subsequently played for Southampton, Swansea Town
and Kings Lynn and after his retirement became a
publican in Hampshire.
Returning to Scotland, John worked for an engineering
company and was living in Lanarkshire at the time of
his death during August 2004.

1949 Death of Curtis Booth,
58.
(1913-20)

1951
Stewart Barrowclough born, Barnsley (1970-78)

Occasionally inspired winger signed from his
home town club where he'd broken through from
the youth side - Barnsley - breaking their transfer
record when raking in £40K.
A broken finger saw him miss the infamous Hereford
replay defeat, but Stewie scored as we won at Old
Trafford the next week.
Barrowclough missed the 1974 Wembley FA Cup Final
defeat due to injury, but was part of the side beaten
there in the
League Cup Final by Manchester City two years later.
Capped at U21 level, he was sold by Bill McGarry
following relegation from Division One in
1978, moving to Birmingham City with John
Connolly and Terry Hibbitt leaving St. Andrews in
exchange.
Later moves saw Stewie appear for Bristol Rovers, return to Barnsley and
then play for Mansfield Town, hanging up his boots
when on the books at Field Mill in 1985.
A return to football came as manager of non-league
Frickley for a spell, while he visited Wembley again in 1996 when in charge of Grimethorpe Miners'
Welfare, his side defeated on penalties in the FA Carlsberg Pub Cup
Final.
Barrowclough lives in Barnsley and was employed as a
technician for Rexam Glass.

1970 Anth Lormor born, Ashington.
(1987-90)
Striker Anth (aka Tony) came to the
attention of Newcastle after scoring 80 goals in 40
games for Wallsend Boys Club, arriving at Gallowgate
via a government YTS (Youth Training Scheme).
Maintaining his scoring form for United reserves and
juniors, he was promoted to the senior squad for a
midweek kickabout away at Queen of the South in
January 1988 and then named on the bench for the
visit of Spurs to SJP the following weekend.
Replacing Mirandinha during a 2-0 victory, 17
year-old Lormor was given further pitch time for the
first team in a home friendly against AS Monaco,
signing a three year contract soon after.
the unavailability of Newcastle's Brazilian forward
then saw Anth handed a first competitive senior
start that April, taking just five minutes to net
the opener in a 3-1 home win over Oxford United.
He added to his tally with what proved to be the
winner in a 2-1 success at Portsmouth the next
weekend and finished the season leading the line as
West Ham lost 2-1 on Tyneside.
While the first team jetted off to the West Indies
on a post-season tour, Lormor was in the party that
won an U21 tournament staged in the Dutch city of
Enschede.
A summer recruitment drive saw the likes of John
Robertson and John Hendrie arrive, Anth going on a
month's loan to Norwich City in November 1988, as
caretaker boss Colin Suggett prepared to sign
trialist forward Rob McDonald.
Returning from Carrow Road a month later without
making an appearance for the Canaries, City defender
Andy Fensome similarly failed to catch the eye at
SJP and returned to Norfolk at that point.
Featuring again for Newcastle's reserve and junior
sides, Anth's next taste of senior football came
when Jim Smith called him up to replace the injured
Mirandinha in May 1989
Netting after just two minutes of a home game
against West Ham, he was unable to prevent a 1-2
loss that sealed our relegation fate.
Featuring against Millwall and Manchester United,
Lormor was pushed further down the striker queue by
Smith signings Mick Quinn, Mark McGhee and Gary
Brazil, returning to the reserves.
Early 1990 saw him sold to Lincoln City, where he suffered a serious knee
injury but recovered - thanks in part to the surgeon who also
repaired the knee of his former Magpie colleague Gazza in 1991.
A move to Peterborough followed before a spell at Chesterfield during which he
scored their first-ever Wembley goal in the playoffs.
Further transfers took Tony to Preston North End, Notts County (loan),
Mansfield Town, Hartlepool United, Shrewsbury Town (loan), Kettering Town (trial),
Halifax Town (trial) and Telford United.
However, his time at the Shropshire-based Conference side was blighted by injury
and he was forced to quit in January 2003.
Lormor joined Central Midlands League side Sutton Town and continued to play at
that level, also working as Commercial Manager.
2005 saw him defect to rivals Heanor Town but a year later he was back at
Sutton - as a coach - before taking on a similar role with North East Counties
League side Teversal.
After a career in telecoms sales, Lormor worked in Commercial & marketing
roles at both Chesterfield and Mansfield - leaving Field Mill again for
pastures new in 2008.
Later acting as Chesterfield's kitman, Tony received a cancer diagnosis in 2013.
Overcoming that, 2021 found him undergoing treatment
for a fourth manifestation of the disease.
PS: Lormor was part of a PFA initiative in 2000 aimed at fast-tracking players
into becoming referees.
However, he quit after getting to Sunday League
standard other commitments preventing him from officiating
Saturday fixtures.

1990
Campbell Bell born, Durham.
(2006-09)
Striker who marked his competitive debut for United's
U18 side with a goal in a 2-0 away win over the smoggies in March 2007.
That goal was of special satisfaction for Bell, who
had been on Boro's books for a spell before linking up
with the Magpies.
However, he failed to break into the Reserve side and
was released, appearing on trial for Lincoln City's
second string in April 2009 but failing to win a deal
at Sincil Bank.
He later became a personal trainer and worked for Durham
County Council.

Daniel, who helped keep out a dozen corners.
Despite playing on the left wing rather than his

The two sides then traded goals, Tommy Cassidy and
then Gowling again giving the visitors the lead only
for Mike Lyons and Bob Latchford (twice) to peg them

Having crept past Fourth Division Crewe Alexandra in
the second round, Ossie Ardiles saw his Division Two
Magpies eliminated by third tier opposition at London

The only goal of a forgettable tie came as a replay
looked odds-on - ex-Newcastle defender Peter Johnson
crossing for Ken Charlery to head past Tommy Wright.
This was to be the solitary first team appearance of
striker Justin Fashanu, who failed to make any impact in
his 20 minute outing from the substitute's bench.
His misery was complete when the visiting dressing room was
broken into and ransacked while the game was in progress -
Fashanu losing £500 in cash and other players robbed of
money and jewellery.

Newcastle's unbeaten start to the season in both
league and cup finally came to an end at the eighteenth
time of asking.
Gary Pallister headed home a Ryan Giggs free kick
awarded by referee Joe Worrall for Steve Watson's clean
challenge on Paul Ince.
And a spirited Newcastle display was finally quashed
late on by a fine effort from Keith Gillespie - catching
the eye once again as he faced his future employers.
Magpies striker Andy Cole missed what would the first of four league
games with shin splints, with Paul Kitson also absent
following the midweek League Cup meeting between these
two sides.
"We were like toothless tigers... there were too many
square pegs in round holes"
bemoaned Kevin Keegan afterwards.

Newcastle's run of eight consecutive

Geordie Chris
Armstrong put Spurs ahead, only for
David Ginola to level early in the second half with a
well-struck shot.
Fellow future Cockerel Les Ferdinand came
agonisingly close to becoming the
first United player to score in nine consecutive
matches, but his late effort was blocked on the line.

UEFA Cup 2nd Round
2nd Leg

Trailing 2-3 after the first leg and without Alan
Shearer, United were given the opportunity to equalise
when Tino Asprilla was hauled over the box after 23
minutes.
Peter Beardsley stepped up to send the visiting
goalkeeper the wrong way at the Leazes End, only for his
penalty to strike a post and deflect out for a goal
kick.
Asprilla did net from close range before the break
though and the hosts then swept the Magyars
aside in the second period.
David Ginola's effort was the pick of the goals; controlling the ball with one foot, knocking it up and
sending a scorching volley into the Gallowgate goal with the
other.
"That is our best display yet; it was tremendous and
I know it was a great advertisement for English
football" enthused Kevin Keegan.

The Ukrainians were beaten despite the absence of United's central defensive pairing of Titus Bramble and
Andy O'Brien through injury.
The winner came when Alan Shearer was held in the box and the
fourth official (who replaced the injured
referee at half time), awarded a fairly soft
penalty.
Al scored to take the fight for qualification to the final set of matches, United away to Feyenoord
and Juventus in Kiev.
As Bobby Robson said: "...if Juventus play their best team and play to win
and do win, then we have a big chance.
"But I can't predict
results - if I could, I would be a rich man, not a

A
classic game of two halves for the reserve
side at St. James' Park - the Alnwick variety, not
the Gallowgate one.
Northern Alliance Premier Division Town made it through to
half time with this Northumberland Senior Cup
tie still 0-0.
However, James Troisi broke the deadlock on 53 minutes and
United scored six times more in the next half hour for
a 7-0 win.

Newcastle broke their Etihad hoodoo at the eleventh time of asking with
an unexpected but thoroughly merited win.
Ryan Taylor claimed an assist for the opener on his first senior appearance for over two years,
later making a fine goal line clearance and playing as if his life
depended on it.
United should have been awarded a penalty with the score at 1-0 when Gabriel
Obertan was felled by Aleksandar Kolarov who would have been red-carded but
rotten referee Stuart Attwell waved away the appeals.
Obertan's shot was disallowed, Paul Dummett had a volley cleared off the
line, Fabricio Coloccini hit his own
post and Rob Elliot made some vital stops. What a night.

place at the top of the Championship with a sixth consecutive league win,
thanks to Aleksandar Mitrovic's second brace in a week.
Mitro's double ensured back-to-back wins over PNE but
it was a very different performance to the 6-0 stroll against the Lilywhites
in the League Cup.

A game of two halves, but Villa played no active part in
either of them. Instead, a trio of sizeable breaks in play for visiting players to get medical attention resulted in 10 minutes of time added to
the opening period, during which United regained their scoring touch. That continued after the break as Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Miggy Almiron
all netted and the goal frame also took a battering. NUFC.com match report
