Carabao Cup:
More home comforts
Newcastle's reward for defeating Spurs in the Fourth
Round of the Carabao Cup is a home tie in the last eight
against a Fulham side beaten 2-1 at St. James' Park earlier this
month:
Quarter-final draw:
Arsenal v Crystal Palace
Cardiff City v Chelsea
Manchester City v Brentford
Newcastle v Fulham
Quarter-final ties are scheduled to take place in the week
commencing Monday December 15th, coming between our Sunday
PL visit to the mackems and the PL home game against Chelsea
the following Saturday lunchtime.
This is the third time that the Magpies and the Cottagers
have been paired in the League Cup, Newcastle 3-0 winners at
Gallowgate in the Fourth Round during January 1975.
Fulham then gained their revenge in October 1982, winning
both legs of a Second Round tie: 2-1 on Tyneside and then
2-0 on the banks of the Thames.
This is Newcastle's 13th appearance in the
quarter-finals and the fourth successive season that Eddie
Howe has guided his side into the last eight:
1974/75 Chester City (a) lost 0-1 (1st replay)
1975/76 Notts County (h) won 1-0
1995/96 Arsenal (a) lost 0-2
1997/98 Liverpool (a) lost 0-2
2001/02 Chelsea (a) lost 0-1
2006/07 Chelsea (h) lost 0-1
2014/15 Spurs (a) lost 0-4
2016/17 Hull City (a) drew 1-1 (lost 1-3 on pens)
2020/21 Brentford (a) lost 0-1
2022/23 Leicester City (h) won 2-0
2023/24 Chelsea (a) drew 1-1 (lost 2-4 on pens)
2024/25 Brentford (h) won 3-1
2025/26 Fulham (h)

Goals from Fabian
Schar and Nick Woltemade propelled Newcastle into the last eight of
the Carabao Cup as Spurs were twice caught napping at Gallowgate on
Wednesday.
Jacob Ramsey and Harvey Barnes had come close but the tie was
scoreless midway through the opening half when the hosts won a
corner that Sandro Tonali shaped to take.
However, the flag kick was delayed for some 45 seconds while Djed Spence fiddled with
his bootlaces, the visiting defender belatedly trotting towards the
area as the ball came over from the right - and was headed straight
into the Leazes End by Schar.
An outraged Richarlison led prolonged protests that his side weren't
ready, but referee Chris Kavanagh was unmoved and the goal stood -
the Spurs striker lucky to only be booked for manhandling the
referee and knocking Joe Willock to the ground.
That fuelled a period of Spurs pressure; Richarlison twice coming
close to connecting with dangerous low crosses pinged in from the
right flank after flowing moves upfield.
The hosts also came close themselves; good work from Tonali and
Malick Thiaw setting up Barnes for an acrobatic shot from close
range that shaved the Spurs crossbar.
United should have added a second soon after the restart when Joe
Willock wasted his header from close in, but the recalled midfielder
capped an encouraging display when pinging in a centre that
Woltemade reached ahead of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and nodded into
the net.
Two timely stops from Aaron Ramsdale then preserved Newcastle's two
goal advantage; first brilliantly denying Pape Sarr and then
Richarlison once again.
The threat from the North Londoners diminished though, as what
became a Tonali master class saw the Italian pop up at both ends of
the field to great effect.
Spurs were also undermined by repeatedly hitting passes out of play
amid ironic cheers from home fans and choruses of "Tottenham
Hotspur, it's happened again", as United closed in on their
fourth successive home win over them.
The introduction of messrs Trippier, Osula and Joelinton livened up
the Magpies - Joelinton soon tussling with Mohammed Kudus and
restrained by colleagues.
The lack of VAR saw only yellows shown although hands were raised
and when Kudus illegally prevented a counter-attack moments later,
Kavanagh ignored strong shouts for a second booking - again a VAR
opinion may have differed.
There were to be no more home goals, the nearest to a third when a
first time effort from Anthony Elanga cannoned off Kevin Danso and
just past his own post.
Despite retaining just three of the side that had lined up against
Fulham at the weekend, a third home win in nine days was richly
deserved and underlined our strength in depth, even without two full
backs and Yoane Wissa.
Spurs may have changed their manager since the last time they
visited, but aside from the profligate Richarlison never looked like
ending United's hopes of a Wembley return.
They still don't like it up north - let's see whether Thomas Frank's
side have any more appetite for the fight when the teams meet here
in the Premier League in December.
Team: Ramsdale, Krafth (Trippier 72), Burn, Schar, Thiaw,
Tonali, Ramsey (Guimaraes 80), Willock (Joelinton 71), Barnes,
Elanga (Gordon 89), Woltemade (Osula 71). Subs n/u: Pope,
Botman, J.Murphy, L.Miley.
Booked: Thiaw, Schar, Joelinton, Trippier
Goals: Schar 24, Woltemade 50
THFC: Kinsky, Porro, Spence,
Danso, Palhinha, Bentancur (Kolo Muani 65), Sarr, Johnson (Kudus
65), Simons, Bergvall, Richarlison (Tel 78). Subs n/u:
Austin, Gunter, Olusesi, Rowswell, Scarlett, van de Ven.
Booked: Richarlison, Palhinha, Kudus
Crowd: 51,216 including
4,900 away fans.
Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer attended.
Spurs supporter and alleged comedian Michael McIntyre was spotted in
the Directors Box, while the artist known as Sting aka Wor Gordon
was present.
Referee: Chris Kavanagh - second Newcastle game of the season so
far for the Lancashire whistler, following the 1-0 Premier League
home success against Wolves.
Completely bottled the second yellow and dismissal of Kudus. Despite
taking ages to give decisions earlier in the game, he immediately
gave a bizarre hand waving gesture to indicate no booking.

Eddie Howe said:
"Really pleased because I think when you make the changes we
did you hope to see a performance that's in line with our identity
and our expectations.
"I thought the pressing early on in the game and general attitude of
the players was very good.
"I think with the way we work we like to think regardless of
the changes we make they deliver a Newcastle performance in line
with our expectations.
"It's most important that our attitude is right from minute one and
the will to win that you need and we had. Individually I thought
there were some really good performances, collectively we were
strong."
On which competitions he is targeting:
"There is no priority. We just want to win and win consistently.
That's such a healthy thing for the group to feel.
"The acid test was this game for that because of the changes
we made. Was our mentality and mindset going to waver? The most
pleasing thing for me was that it didn't.
"We enjoy the competition. We take it seriously. We want to do well.
It's up to the players and how they take to the pitch.
"We made a number of changes. There is always a slight doubt
about how that team will knit together.
"But, from minute one, we looked in a really good place.
Athletically we were excellent. A lot of those players haven't
played regularly so that's testament to their professionalism and
how they have looked after themselves between games and they got
their rewards."
On scoring from a corner:
"something we've worked really hard on lately in our game and I
think we have the height and power to cause teams problems.
"It's great to see a great delivery from Sandro (Tonali) and
Fabian's (Schar) header was top class. He's always had a goal
in him, he's always had that creative side of him game and it was a
great moment for him."
Fourth Round results:
Tue 28.10.2025:
Grimsby Town 0-5 Brentford

That required a random draw to decide the winners, from which

Ex-Magpie Callum Wilson has netted once for his latest club in six
Premier League appearances (one start). The forward failed to score
in any of his five outings against Newcastle during his time as a
Bournemouth player.
The Hammers have lost all four of their PL home games so far this
season - and the final one last season - the first time since 1931
they've suffered that ignominy.
Referee: Robert Jones - second Toon posting of the season for the
Merseyside whistler, having taken charge of our 0-0 draw at
Bournemouth and ignored a blatant shirt pull in the box on Nick
Woltemade. That doesn't inspire confidence...

with three wins from as many games seeing them win their group.
This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the
last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester
United in 2024.
Also in the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leicester
City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.
News of the draw is awaited.
Internationals:
Toon Teens in actionTuesday afternoon saw England
and Scotland U17s meet in a European Championship qualifying tie at
Airdrie, with Newcastle representation in both sides.
The visitors included United goalkeeper George
Mair and were captained by midfielder Sam Alabi,
while defender Oliver Goodbrand wore the armband for the
Scots.
Goodbrand's side were 1-0 winners thanks to a goal in second half
added time, both he and Mair playing for the entire game while Alabi
completed 64 minutes.
Both sides return to action on Thursday; England facing Lithuania
before Scotland take on Sweden. The third and final set of games on
Monday then sees England against Sweden and Scotland against
Lithuania.

Belfast boy
Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill
McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.
The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons,
winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines
worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.
Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in
managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to
Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

Born Or Died:
1894
Neil Harris born, Tollcross, Glasgow, Scotland. (1920-25)
Diminutive forward who had begun his playing career with Vale
of Clyde before moving on to join Partick Thistle.
Guesting during wartime for Distillery and Fulham, Harris was loaned to
Kilmarnock, Rangers and St.Mirren before completing a £3,300 move to Newcastle
in May 1920.
Debuting in a 1-1 home draw against West Bromwich Albion the following August,
Neil's first goal goal came the following week during a 1-3 defeat away to
Everton.
A hat trick in a 6-1 home hammering of the mackems later that season then came
during a record eight game scoring run and he remained an attacking mainstay
during the following four seasons.
The 1923/24 campaign was to be a high point for Harris, his 23 goal haul
including eight FA strikes, not least of which was a hat trick to defeat Derby
County in the third replay of a Second Round tie.
Scoring both goals in the 2-0 semi-final win over Manchester City at St.Andrews,
Neil then made the vital breakthrough against Aston Villa in the final, netting
with just seven minutes remaining as the Magpies ultimately ran out 2-0
winners.
That was a second memorable moment at Wembley that month for Harris, who had
won what was to be his sole senior cap there for Scotland in a 1-1 draw with
England just two weeks earlier.
Leaving United in 1925, Harris appeared for the Magpies of Notts County, Irish
side Shelbourne and Oldham Athletic before returning to Scotland with Third
Lanark.
A first taste of management came as player -boss of Burton Town and after a
stint in Ireland with Distillery, he took charge of Swansea Town in 1934 and
then Swindon Town some five years later.
Remaining in post after the outbreak of WW2 saw league football suspended, Neil
made a brief playing return at the age of 45 away to Bristol City. However it's
reported that his borrowed boots were too small and he lost two toenails in a
2-5 defeat!
With the County Ground in use by the War Department, Swindon opted to suspend
playing in 1940 and Harris was released on the understanding that he'd be
recalled to his post once football recommenced.
However, he passed away in December 1941.

1924
Charlie Crowe born, Walker.
(1944-57)
Left half who joined United in 1944 from local football and
played in wartime games, although his competitive first team debut didn't come
until an FA Cup tie against Barnsley in January 1946.
Becoming a senior team regular by the 1949-50 season as United cemented their
place back in the top flight, Charlie played in the 1951 FA Cup final victory
over Blackpool at Wembley Stadium.
However he wasn't selected for
the 1952 final and also missed out in 1955, picking up an ankle injury during a
league match against
Spurs just days earlier.
Despite that winner's medal however, Charlie maintained that the
highlight of his career at SJP was when his fellow players chose him as Magpies
club captain
in 1954.
After leaving United, Charlie appeared for Mansfield Town, returning to live in
North Tyneside after retiring from playing.
Spells coaching in Egypt, Whitley Bay and on the FA staff followed and he also
worked as a civil servant on North Tyneside.
Sadly, Charlie was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease and died in February 2010,
the last survivor of the 1951 side.
His name lived on in a successful charity effort to acquire a high-powered MRI scanner housed in
Newcastle.

1946
Tony Green born, Kinning Park, Glasgow. (1971-73)

Recalled with genuine fondness by those who saw him play, Tony
Green's talents were comparable with the likes of Paul Gascoigne and Peter
Beardsley. However, injury would prevent him from truly making his mark
for both club and country.
Brought to England by Blackpool from Albion Rovers in May 1967 at a cost of
£15,500, Tony's skill had delighted Tangerines fans although he spent a year
out through injury.
After submitting a transfer request, Green moved to SJP in a part-exchange deal
in October 1971, with £150,000 and Keith Dyson heading to Bloomfield Road.
Debuting the following month in a 0-1 loss at Everton on his 25th birthday, a 5-1
win over Coventry City in the Texaco Cup then gave Gallowgate spectators their
first taste of the midfielder's magic.
And when he marked his home league debut the following Saturday with a goal in
a 3-1 win over Southampton, Tyneside had a new cult hero and manager Joe Harvey
had the last piece of his ideal XI.
Tony's task was to provide service to front duo Malcolm Macdonald and John
Tudor, but the sheer artistry of his ball playing was worth the admission fee
alone.
International recognition came while Green was still a Seasider, winning the
first of six full caps for Scotland against Belgium in Liege during February
1971 - in the same side as future club colleague Bob Moncur.
However, a tackle during a game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in September 1972 left Green with cartilage damage from which he
never recovered.
After a failed comeback for the reserves, what Joe Harvey called
"the saddest day of my life" came in December 1973, when Green
confirmed his retirement.
Awarded a testimonial match at SJP in May 1974, Tony became a mathematics
teacher in the Blackpool area and two years later was invited to join the Pools
Panel.
Speaking to a Seasiders' website he said:
"When I played for Blackpool, we regularly had crowds of 20,000 or
above, this was often increased when the illuminations were on, as a result of
holiday makers.
"In Newcastle, everyone seems to support the football team. Even the wives
knew the result, as it depended on whether their partners were in a good mood
or not.
"It’s unfair to compare Blackpool’s fans with Newcastle’s, because
I believe that Newcastle have the best support in the country."

1997 Sean Longstaff born, North Shields
(2014-25)

Midfielder whose U18 debut came from the bench in a 0-1 loss away to Arsenal in April 2014.
Scoring seven times in his
first ten youth league games, Sean marked his reserve bow in October 2014 by netting in a
friendly win at Heaton Stannington.
An U21 league bow came from the bench against Blackburn Rovers two months
later, his first competitive goal in a 4-6 loss at
Derby County in October 2015.
Longstaff's reserve form saw him watched by scouts
from various clubs and a loan move to Scottish Premier
League side Kilmarnock was agreed in early 2017.
Three goals in 17 appearances followed and the
following season was spent with League One Blackpool -
making a spectacular start for the Tangerines with
four eye-catching strikes in his first quartet of
league games.
Ending the season with nine goals from 45 outings, a
further loan move was tipped for 2018/19 but in the
event Sean remained with Newcastle and marked his
senior bow with a goal in a friendly at St. Patrick's
Athletic.
Wearing number 36, Lobby then made his competitive
debut in a League Cup loss at
Nottingham Forest - warming the bench
in the Premier League around that time without getting
on. A Premier League bow came in a 0-4 Boxing Day defeat at Anfield;
with a first senior goal for the Magpies at Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup a
month later.
The 2019/20 season saw him line up with
younger brother for the first time in the Premier League against Manchester United, Matty scoring the only goal of the game.
Two games later Sean was shown a straight red card at home to Wolves, picking up a three game ban.
Netting at Oxford United in the FA Cup and then at Bournemouth post COVID
lockdown, a loss of form and injuries restricted his impact during the
early part of the 2020/21 season.
A regular starter in the opening weeks of the following campaign, Lobby
scored another memorable goal in
a 1-1 draw at Watford.
Playing his part in the side's resurgence under Eddie Howe, Sean continued
to thrive during the 2022/23 season, two goals in the home leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton sending United to
Wembley. Used as a substitute in the opening weeks of the 2023/24
season, Sean's return to the side coincided with an improvement in results and
he almost marked his Champions League debut with a late winner at AC Milan.
A run of three goals in five games then followed, including one at the Gallowgate
End against PSG in the Champions League,
However, his appearances became mainly from the bench and he was sold to
newly-promoted Leeds United in July 2025.

1997 Ben Smith born, Gateshead
(2014-17)

The second Magpies Academy goalkeeper of that name, Ben
began training with United in 2010, earning a
scholarship ahead of the 2014/15 season.
However, an injury during a friendly game sidelined him for the whole of the campaign.
Returning to fitness but finding himself behind
Nathan Harker, Paul Woolston and Brendan Pearson, Ben played a handful of games
for Bristol City U18s while on loan during 2015.
Between the posts for Newcastle's opening pre-season game at Bradford
PA in July 2016, further injury problems sidelined him until
early 2017.
A competitive reserve team debut then arrived in a 2-1 defeat at Swansea City
in the Premier League Cup that January.
Later loaned to non-league Spennymoor United, Ben was released by
Newcastle at the end of the 2016/17 season.

A poor game played on a pitch described as an

when England international winger Jackie Morton beat Tom
Swinburne.
Newcastle's shooting was of poor quality, one miscued
effort on goal sailing over the bar and ending up in the
street outside!
Such was the abuse directed at Newcastle's Bill Imrie by
some home followers after a robust challenge, that two
policemen were posted near the offending section to keep
the peace.

After a troubling week that included defeats at Southampton and Wimbledon and quarrels between Lee Clark,
Andy Cole and Manager Kevin Keegan, peace broke out.
After clearing the air, both players were back in the side
and celebrated as Cole netted.
The day belonged to Peter Beardsley though, who scored the
first goals of his second spell at SJP, capping the
afternoon with his hat trick goal - a cheeky chip over
Hans Segers.

Extra time efforts
from Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko proved enough to end our interest
in the League Cup for another season.
A City side with ten changes their previous league game survived some uncomfortable moments and were
slightly fortunate to make it as far as the additional half hour.
However, United lacked the killer touch to record a first win over City in fifteen
league and cup attempts going back eight years.

ultimately divided the two teams.
Ayoze Perez lost the ball in midfield and when the rebound from Rob Elliot's
save reached the back post, Hendrick had time to control before smashing the
ball into the roof of the net.
