2025/26:
West Ham (a)

Newcastle attempt to end their seven game winless Premier League run on the road at the London Stadium on Sunday.

It's a 2pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

NB: Away ticket transfers for this game ended earlier than usual and had to be completed by 2pm on Saturday
.

The Magpies are making their ninth appearance at this unloved edifice of a sports stadium, having lost just one of the previous eight; winning five times and drawing twice.

Team:
Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa remain unavailable.

WHUFC:
Konstantinos Mavropanos, Niclas Fullkrug and Oliver Scarles are all missing due to injury.

Ex-Magpie Callum Wilson has netted once for his latest club in six Premier League appearances (one start). The forward failed to score in any of his five outings against Newcastle during his time as a Bournemouth player.

The Hammers have lost all four of their PL home games so far this season - and the final one last season - the first time since 1931 they've suffered that ignominy.

Referee: Robert Jones - second Toon posting of the season for the Merseyside whistler, having taken charge of our 0-0 draw at Bournemouth and ignored a blatant shirt pull in the box on Nick Woltemade. That doesn't inspire confidence...

U18s:
Wide boys wing it

Newcastle U18s  3  Everton U18s
1

United's U18s rose to third in the table on Saturday, thanks a deserved victory over Everton that ended a run of three successive losses at this level to the Merseyside Blues.

The visitors were fortunate to escape a third minute attack that ended with goalkeeper Douglass Lukjanciks clearing an effort from his defender Lewis Evans from behind the line - something that the match officials didn't spot.

Newcastle's opening goal wasn't long in arriving though; a neat exchange of passes between right winger Mo Waddani and Matty Taylor on the edge of the box setting up the former to convert with a low shot in the ninth minute.

Magpies captain Jude Cogdon shot against the goal frame midway through the opening half before Waddani tried to repay the compliment by playing Taylor in - only for the visiting goalkeeper to palm the shot away for a corner.

United's left winger Matheos Ferreira doubled the lead four minutes after the interval before Alex O'Donovan added a third just after the hour following a scramble in the box.

The Toffees did reduce the arrears on 71 minutes when Kean Wren swept home a first-time effort from Shea Pita's right wing centre, but the destination of the points was never in doubt and United missed a couple of late half-chances to improve their goal difference.

Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Durrant, Moran, Old, Cogdon, Waddani (Patterson 87), M.Taylor (Lucas 80), Hutchison (Pinnington 73), O'Donovan, Ferreira (Seldon 73).
Sub n/u: Anderson.

Booked: Bloomer, Ferriera, Hutchison

Ipswich Town U21s  1  Newcastle U21s

Newcastle's second string became the latest side to fall victim to an in-form Ipswich Town side, whose victory at Portman Road on Friday saw them go top of PL2.

A 41st minute strike from Town midfielder Finley Barbrook extended their unbeaten record in this competition to eight games; seven wins and one draw.

Victory for the
hosts came despite them playing for over half an hour with ten men, after defender Walker Shabazz-Edwards received his second yellow card of the game.

Thanks to everyone who entered our score prediction competition in association with Pitch Publishing.

We had two copies of
"Pass Master", a new memoir from former Magpie midfielder, Liam O'Brien and 44 of you correctly guessed that we'd defeat Spurs 2-0.

That required a random draw to decide the winners, from which John Dunn and Graham Robinson.

Carabao Cup:
More home comforts

Newcastle's reward for defeating Spurs in the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup is a home tie in the last eight against a Fulham side beaten 2-1 at St. James' Park earlier this month:

Quarter-final draw:

Arsenal v Crystal Palace
Cardiff City v Chelsea
Manchester City v Brentford
Newcastle v Fulham

Quarter-final ties are scheduled to take place in the week commencing Monday December 15th, coming between our Sunday PL visit to the mackems and the PL home game against Chelsea the following Saturday lunchtime.

This is the third time that the Magpies and the Cottagers have been paired in the League Cup, Newcastle 3-0 winners at Gallowgate in the Fourth Round during January 1975.

Fulham then gained their revenge in October 1982, winning both legs of a Second Round tie: 2-1 on Tyneside and then 2-0 on the banks of the Thames.

N
ewcastle are making their 13th appearance in the quarter-finals; this is the fourth successive season that Eddie Howe has guided his side into the last eight:

1974/75 Chester City (a) lost 0-1 (1st replay)
1975/76 Notts County (h) won 1-0
1995/96 Arsenal (a) lost 0-2
1997/98 Liverpool (a) lost 0-2
2001/02 Chelsea (a) lost 0-1
2006/07 Chelsea (h) lost 0-1
2014/15 Spurs (a) lost 0-4
2016/17 Hull City (a) drew 1-1 (lost 1-3 on pens)
2020/21 Brentford (a) lost 0-1
2022/23 Leicester City (h) won 2-0
2023/24 Chelsea (a) drew 1-1 (lost 2-4 on pens)
2024/25 Brentford (h) won 3-1
2025/26 Fulham (h)

Academy:
Youngsters advance

Newcastle U17s have progressed to the knockout stages of this season's Premier League Cup, with three wins from as many games seeing them win their group.

This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester United in 2024.

Also in the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.

News of the draw is awaited.

Old boy:
Defender sighted

Former Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis is back in the game, signing a short-term contract at Championship side Preston North End.

The 27 year-old became a free agent last summer when his Magpies contract expired, having not played since his loan spell at Brazilians Sao Paulo ended in November 2024.

Toon Teens in action

England and Scotland U17s are currently in European Championship qualifying action in Scotland, both sides playing their second game on Friday.

With Newcastle's George Mair in goal and midfielder Sam Alabi captaining the side, the young Lions lost 0-1 to Lithuania at Cumbernauld - a result that means they now cannot qualify for the finals

Scotland and Magpies defender Oliver Goodbrand then led the Scotland side beaten 0-2 by Sweden at Airdrie a short time later, collecting a booking for his troubles.

Tuesday afternoon had seen England and Scotland meet at Airdrie, the Scots winning that 1-0 with all three young Magpies starting for their respective sides.

The third and final set of games on Monday then sees England against Sweden and Scotland face Lithuania.

Elsewhere, United's Lesecond Yeutembip is with England U16s at the Football Federations Cup in the Turkish city of Antalya.

The 15 year-old defender was in the starting line-up for their opener on Thursday, England defeating Wales 5-1.

Next up is a meeting with hosts Turkey on Saturday and then Portugal on Tuesday.

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at 30.

On This Day in History
1st November

Born Or Died:

1921 Norman Dodgin born, Gateshead. (1940-50)

Defender who was at SJP during WW2, but didn't make a competitive debut until 1947, when appearing in place of the injured Joe Harvey in a home defeat by Chesterfield.

Norman moved on to Reading in June 1950 in a £5,000 deal, but barely a year later was transferred to Northampton Town.

A longer posting to Exeter City saw him arrive as a player, before going into management with the Grecians.

Dodgin took charge of non-league Yeovil Town in the summer of 1957, but left before the season started, after being poached by Barrow (at the time a Football League side).

His final club was Oldham Athletic, taking charge at Boundary Park between 1958 and 1960. Norman passed away in 2000.

1929 George Brander born, Aberdeen, Scotland. (1952-54)

Left winger signed from Raith Rovers as an understudy to Bobby Mitchell, marking his 23rd birthday by debuting in a 1-0 home victory over Derby County in 1952.

A lack of first team opportunities however saw George return to his native Scotland with Stirling Albion in January 1954 for a £1,000 fee.

He also played for Huntly and Fraserburgh - featuring for the latter in a Scottish Cup giant-killing, defeating Dundee 1-0 in 1959.

Brander died in Aberdeen during June 1995.

1942 Preben Arentoft born, Copenhagen, Denmark. (1969-71)

The Dashing Dane was signed from Scottish side Greenock Morton, allowing United to evade a ban on signing overseas players who hadn't lived in the UK and planned to remain there (marrying a Scottish lass also helped his cause).

The midfielder known as "Benny" debuted in a 1-0 victory at Spurs in April 1969 and marked his home debut a week later by scoring in a 3-2 home win against Sheffield Wednesday.

However, it was his goal in the second leg of the Fairs Cup Final in Budapest two months later that placed him in United folklore.

Benny remained in Toon and appeared in our European campaigns in the following two seasons before joining Blackburn Rovers, where he played full back.

His final club proved to be Swedish outfit   Helsingborgs, before he returned to settle in his home city, working for the local council and also becoming known as an art dealer.

2009 saw Benny return to Tyneside for the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Fairs Cup triumph, making the journey by sea due to an aversion to flying.

1977 Carl Cort born, Southwark, London. (2000-04)

Bought from Wimbledon for £7m during July 2000, Cort's senior bow for The Wombles came at SJP in September 1997 - netting within two minutes of the kick-off.

That came after he'd been loaned to Lincoln City, returning to The Dons and an England U21 call-up.

Cort initially did well on Tyneside, scoring three goals in pre-season and taking four minutes of his competitive debut to net.

However after just five competitive games, a hamstring injury put him out for six months - a stop-start pattern that was to repeat itself throughout his four year stay.

To general relief, Cort made a £2m switch to Wolves during January 2004, but Bobby Robson reacted with fury when press reports called the striker a waste of money:

"I wish him well. I bought Carl Cort, I'll stand up for my judgment on Carl Cort, and I hope Carl Cort, if he goes, I hope he does really well.

"He will prove to be a Premiership player and he might kick us in the teeth one day - and I hope he does.

"That boy has gone from one horrendous injury to another - he was never Marcelino. He never gave me one moment - not a minute, I said a moment - of problems.

"We tried to keep him going with one injury on to another. He had a hazardous time, poor kid, went from one serious injury to another. He's not a hypochondriac, they were genuine injuries.

"When we bought him, we thought 'what a player we've got here'. We were delighted with him, and then sadly, he's just had a terrible time."

Carl became a Molineux goal hero, at one time netting 30 times in 70 appearances for Wolves.

However, he then reverted back to type, injury & suspension seeing him play just ten times in 2006/07 - no goals but a red card.

Joining Leicester City, in June 2007, his first Foxes goal came at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in the League Cup.

Just over six months later though - and having failed to score again for Leicester  - Cort signed for Spanish side UD Marbella.

That stay was again blighted by hamstring injuries though and he left within months, belatedly reappearing on trial at Norwich City in the final weeks of 2008.

A short-term deal with the Canaries saw him net once in a dozen outings, before leaving Carrow Road in the close season.

Appearing on trial in pre-season at Peter Taylor's Wycombe Wanderers, Cort then signed a permanent deal with Brentford.

Playing 31 times for The Bees, Carl found the net just six times and left Griffin Park in January 2011.

He then belatedly resurfaced in August 2012 with NASL side Tampa Bay Rowdies, in the second tier of US professional soccer.

Cort's goal helped his side to win the NASL Soccer Bowl in October 2012, beating the Minnesota Stars on penalties after the two legged final ended 3-3 on aggregate - although he missed his shootout kick.

Remaining in the USA after hanging up his boots, 2022 found Cort working as an Uber driver in the city of Las Vegas.

While Carl isn't remembered fondly on Tyneside, his off-field activities raised a titter, in particular with ex-wife Melissa.

In the run-up to Christmas 2001, the-then Mr and Mrs Cort were ejected from Tesco at Kingston Park in a "trolley rage" incident.

And relations had deteriorated within a year, with Cort taking out a restraining order against his now ex-wife, who attacked him when she found her former husband with another woman.

Monuments to Cort sprang
up all over Tyneside

1982 Bradley Orr born, Liverpool. (1996-04)

With Everton as a bairn, central midfielder Bradley joined United's academy aged 14 and came through the youth sides to make a reserve team bow in September 2000.

Loaned to third tier side Burnley in January 2004, he was on the bench for United's UEFA Cup Semi-Final at home to Marseille three months later but released soon after.

Joining Bristol City, six years at Ashton Gate saw him convert to right back, be sent off for attempting to headbutt a team mate and receive a 28 day prison sentence following a fight outside a Bristol nightclub.

Moving on to QPR in 2010, Orr was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League but then found his pitch time limited and was sold to Blackburn Rovers in 2012.

However he failed to win a regular starting place and was loaned out to Ipswich Town, Blackpool and MLS side Toronto.

Returning to England in 2015, Bradley chose to retire from playing at the age of 32, following his release by Blackburn.

He later worked as a player's agent and ran a sports management company in Liverpool - representing childhood pal Joey Barton at an FA hearing over illegal betting in 2018.

1995 Macauley Booth born, Stockport.
(2012-14)

Full back who appeared as a trialist for United's U18s in the closing weeks of the 2011/12 season following his release by Blackburn Rovers.

Doing enough to earn a place in the Magpies Academy, Macauley featured at both U18 league and Youth Cup level during the following season and was also named as an unused sub for the U21 side.

Debuting at reserve level in a 3-4 defeat to Boro in August 2013, Booth then suffered knee ligament damge and celebrated his 18th birthday while still sidelined.

Released by United in Summer 2014, Macauley later played for North West Counties side Congleton Town.

United's European return after a 17 year absence ended at the second time of asking, two late goals conceded to the Basque side in the first at SJP proving decisive.

United were without Andy Cole and kept the Basques at bay until a shot from Jose Angel Ziganda deflected off Steve Howey and slithered under the diving Pavel Srnicek.

Blibao then missed a late penalty after Bez was adjudged to have fouled Suances in the box, the spot kick hitting a post before the referee blew for an infringement before the rebound was whacked home.

Kevin Keegan's side were unable to conjure up the goal that would have taken us through however, with a late Beardsley shimmy and shot blocked by Valencia.

Despite that disappointment, this trip to the San Mames remains a favourite European memory for many, due to the warmth of the reception from the home fans.

That was due in no small part to the positive experience reported by Bilbao fans and media who had travelled to Tyneside -the local newspaper making favourable comparisons between Geordies and the Basques.

Scandalously, the peaceful post-match pitch invasion by home fans was reported as a riot involving Toon fans by The Sun - total lies.

Jon Dahl Tomasson finally got off the mark on his twelfth start for United, but few inside SJP were aware of that until half time PA confirmation.

The Danish youngster was leading the attack in the absence of Alan Shearer, Tino Asprilla, Ian Rush and Keith Gillespie.

That goal decision appeared to have come from within the dressing room and looked to be harsh on Tomasson's Toon colleague Des Hamilton, whose effort was goalbound.

John Beresford blasted home to make it 3-3 in the final seconds and there was still time for Emile Heskey to be dismissed after clashing with Philippe Albert.

Michael McCrudden's fifth goal of the season made it four successive wins for the U18s, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 to maintain pole position.

2010 The club released this
statement:

"There has been unfounded speculation today suggesting that Freddy Shepherd intends to put a consortium together in a bid to buy Newcastle United FC from its owner, Mike Ashley.

"The Club can confirm that it has not received any contact from Freddy Shepherd expressing an interest in buying the Club, nor is the Club for sale."

The story looked to have surfaced on the ESPN website, with later claims that the ex Chairman had refused to rule out such a move. That differed from Sky Sports, who claimed to have received a denial from the Shepherd camp.

2011
United reserves made it six games unbeaten after registering a first win at Wigan's Robin Park in six attempts.

A 2-0 success came thanks to goals in each half from Haris Vuckic and Mehdi Abeid.

Callum Wilson's second half brace prevented Everton returning to the top of the Premier League.

mackem 'keeper Jordan Pickford was dropped after
previous clangers in games against
us, meaning that he was denied the chance to repeat his SJP penalty save two seasons earlier when Wilson went down in the box.

That decision survived a lengthy VAR check before Wilson fired past debutant custodian Robin Olsen for his third spot kick success of the season.

It looked to be game over when Wilson touched in a deflected cross, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal at the start of six added minutes ensured a nervy finale.
