2025/26:
Hammer horror

West Ham  3  Newcastle  1

Newcastle's woes on the road continued in East London on Sunday, tossing away an early lead and beaten by a side winless at home since February, whose fans staged sit-in protests aimed at their owners after the final whistle.

Eddie Howe's
side deserved precisely nothing from their disjointed and listless performance, which was as poor as anything seen in his tenure and extended their winless away run in the Premier League to eight games.

They failed to take advantage of some hefty slices of luck in an opening 45 minutes that could have seen the hosts score more than the two goals they were gifted.

A lengthy VAR intervention overturned a penalty award as Mailk Thiaw's slight touch on the ball saw referee Rob Jones' check the pitchside monitor and change his decision.

Jacob Murphy gave United the lead just 26 seconds after West Ham's Jarrod Bowen hit the inside of the post, the Newcastle winger finishing smartly after being put through down the right.

But that was as good as it got for the green-clad Magpies, who seemed to think that just turning up here would earn victory - their arrogance reinforced by the early goal.

The penalty escape failed to give the visitors a jolt and a
lthough they stayed in front until the 35th minute, their  lethargy was punished when Nick Pope punched a cross he could have caught; the goalkeeper pushing a speculative 25 yard effort from Lucas Paqueta into the net.

Worse was to follow when the Hammers marauded forward in first half added time; Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross from the right deflected inside the near post by Sven Botman.

That signalled three half-time changes by Howe with Will Osula replacing the isolated Nick Woltemade, Jacob Ramsey coming on for the anonymous Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar swapped for the awful Emil Krafth - filling in at right back in the absence of illness victim Kieran Trippier.

But the Swedish defender wasn't on his own and any of the starting eleven could have been substituted, such was the woefulness of the opening period.

It seemed impossible that things could get worse but despite dominating possession, Newcastle created almost nothing after the interval; crosses into the box invariably aimless.

Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga were introduced, Murphy and Botman making way but there was still very little threat on Alphonse Areola's goal, one header from Osula going straight into the 'keeper's arms.

Pushing forward, the visitors were inevitably vulnerable on the break and in the final moments of time added on, home substitute Tomas Soucek bundled the ball in after Pope had saved but was unable to hold on to it. A lengthy VAR check this time belatedly confirmed the absence of an offside.

Defeat left Newcastle languishing in 13th position in the  table with the meagre return of 12 points from ten games.

Everton could make that 14th if they beat the mackems in the Monday night live TV game.

After the game Eddie Howe said:

“We were unrecognisable in some aspects of our game. We were better in the second half but not great.

"It didn’t look like a Newcastle team.... we weren’t where we needed to be mentally. We’ll go away and learn from today. It could be a turning point that we could work to our advantage.

"I didn't like the body language of the group, but that can manifest its outcome in many different ways, fatigue, whatever.

"We rested a lot of players in midweek to try and give them fresh energy, but sometimes it can just be the routine of preparing for another game can catch up with you.

"I don't want to look like I'm looking for excuses, I'm just trying to myself figure out what happened today.

"It's never one thing, there's always a combination of factors, but certainly I've never accused my players of lacking effort. They're too good of professionals for that."

On making three substitutions at half-time:

"I could have taken anyone off. It's very rare to feel that way. I haven’t felt like that since I’ve been Newcastle manager. The team needed shaking up.

"It’s a concern when you’re not where you want to be, because you're always in a position where you're chasing results. We haven't hit our rhythm in the Premier League, not consistently. We've had some highs but today is a low.

"When you’re going from competition to competition the focus changes quickly. That’s a challenge we have to prepare for better."

Referee: Robert Jones - second Toon posting of the season for the Merseyside whistler, having taken charge of our 0-0 draw at Bournemouth.

VAR: Paul Howard.

Stats:

Another rotten day out for the green away strip.

Newcastle have failed to win any of the last eight Premier League away games, their longest barren run in that competition since the opening nine games of 2021/22.

A second PL goal of the season for Jacob Murphy saw him reach 21 strikes in that competition. He has one less than current colleague Joelinton and ex-Mag Laurent Robert.

Murphy's fifth minute strike was the quickest by any Magpie in league and cup games this season and the speediest since Sandro Tonali's second minute effort at home to Chelsea in the Premier League back in May 2025.

One has to go back to April 2025 and United's most recent PL away win at Leicester City for a quicker goal on the road, scored in two minutes by....Jacob Murphy.

Murphy's effort at the London Stadium is the first time that Newcastle have scored the opening goal in a PL away game but gone on to lose since Alexander Isak netted at Anfield back in August 2022.

Newcastle U18s  3  Everton U18s
1

United's U18s rose to third in the table on Saturday, thanks a deserved victory over Everton that ended a run of three successive losses at this level to the Merseyside Blues.

The visitors were fortunate to escape a third minute attack that ended with goalkeeper Douglass Lukjanciks clearing an effort from his defender Lewis Evans from behind the line - something that the match officials didn't spot.

Newcastle's opening goal wasn't long in arriving though; a neat exchange of passes between right winger Mo Waddani and Matty Taylor on the edge of the box setting up the former to convert with a low shot in the ninth minute.

Magpies captain Jude Cogdon shot against the goal frame midway through the opening half before Waddani tried to repay the compliment by playing Taylor in - only for the visiting goalkeeper to palm the shot away for a corner.

United's left winger Matheos Ferreira doubled the lead four minutes after the interval before Alex O'Donovan added a third just after the hour following a scramble in the box.

The Toffees did reduce the arrears on 71 minutes when Kean Wren swept home a first-time effort from Shea Pita's right wing centre, but the destination of the points was never in doubt and United missed a couple of late half-chances to improve their goal difference.

Team: Dowell, Bloomer, Durrant, Moran, Old, Cogdon, Waddani (Patterson 87), M.Taylor (Lucas 80), Hutchison (Pinnington 73), O'Donovan, Ferreira (Seldon 73).

Academy:
Youngsters advance

Newcastle U17s have progressed to the knockout stages of this season's Premier League Cup, with three wins from as many games seeing them win their group.

This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester United in 2024.

Also in the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.

News of the draw is awaited.

Old boy:
Defender sighted

Former Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis is back in the game, signing a short-term contract at Championship side Preston North End.

The 27 year-old became a free agent last summer when his Magpies contract expired, having not played since his loan spell at Brazilians Sao Paulo ended in November 2024.

Saturday saw him appear from the bench in the closing stages of North End's 2-0 victory at Southampton.

Internationals:
Toon Teens in action

England and Scotland U17s are currently in European Championship qualifying action in Scotland, both sides playing their second game on Friday.

With Newcastle's George Mair in goal and midfielder Sam Alabi captaining the side, the young Lions lost 0-1 to Lithuania at Cumbernauld.

Scotland and Magpies defender Oliver Goodbrand then led the Scotland side beaten 0-2 by Sweden at Airdrie a short time later, collecting a booking for his troubles.

Tuesday afternoon had seen England and Scotland meet at Airdrie, the Scots winning that 1-0 with all three young Magpies starting for their respective sides.

The third and final set of games on Monday saw England beaten 5-3 by Sweden, with Mair remaining on the bench and Alabi introduced in the closing moments.

The Young Lions now cannot qualify for next year's finals, dropping into a phase of the competition that decides promotion and relegation for the next U19 Euros.

Meanwhile, Scotland defeated Lithuania 4-1 with Oliver appearing from the bench with the scoring complete - a result that sees them advance to the next stage of qualification for the finals in Estonia next May.

Elsewhere, United's Lesecond Yeutembip is with England U16s at the Football Federations Cup in Antalya.

The 15 year-old defender was in the starting line-up for their opener on Thursday, England defeating Wales 5-1.

Saturday then saw England beaten 2-3 by host nationa Turkey, with Yeutembip starting on the bench.

The U16s round off their games against Portugal on Tuesday.

Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

On This Day in History
3rd November

Born Or Died:

1999 Kelland Watts born, Alnwick.
(2016-24)

With United's Academy from the age of eight, Kelland made his U18 debut from the bench during a 0-1 loss to the mackems in 2016.

That was in midfield but he ended up as something of a utility player also featuring in defence and attack.

A first international call-up saw Watts represent England U19s at the 2018 European Championship Finals in Finland.

Debuting for the U23s at West Bromwich Albion that August, Kell was an unused first team substitute in the Premier League at Fulham in May 2019.

A senior team bow against Wolves at the Asia Trophy in China came two months later before signing a three year deal and joining League Two sides Stevenage and Mansfield Town on half-season loans.

The COVID season break saw Watts back on Tyneside, a temporary relaxing of the "three clubs in one season" rule leading to a Premier League bow from the bench in Newcastle's season closer at home to Liverpool in July 2020.

A season-long loan to League One side Plymouth Argyle was then agreed a few weeks later.

Playing for Newcastle in pre-season ahead of the 2021/22 season, Kell was belatedly cut from the squad - a delay claimed to have torpedoed a pending loan switch to a Championship club.

A season-long loan was agreed to another League One side - Wigan Athletic - where he helped them win the League One title.

Returning to Newcastle's senior squad, a knee injury sustained during pre-season in Austria sidelined Kell, although he made a season-long loan switch to Peterborough United in September while recuperating.

He made 11 Posh appearances before returning to Tyneside and then returned to Wigan for a further loan in 2023.

Released by the Magpies in May 2024, he joined League One side Cambridge United.

A depleted Newcastle side earned a point at The Baseball Ground despite ending the game with just nine men on the field.

1923 Manchester City (a)

Division One
Mitchell(12)
Barnes(20pen)

Newcastle avoided what would have been their sixth successive away defeat, but their first visit to the recently-opened Maine Road was anything but memorable - as the Athletic News correspondent confirmed:

"There were bright interludes, but they were few and far between and never anything approaching sustained excellence on either side. For the most part it was a drab monotone of mediocrity."

1928 Huddersfield Town (h)

United travelled to Anfield without future Liverpool player Albert Stubbins, who was playing for an FA XI against a British Army side in Dusseldorf.

He bagged a hat-trick, while Billy Fagan collected all three goals against United on Merseyside.

1950 Newcastle Reserves were beaten 0-4 by Berwick Rangers Reserves in a friendly staged at Shielfield Park.

All the goals came in the second half; through Mountcastle (65,84), Paris (75) and Lindores (88).

Team: Lowery, Storey, Cook, Campbell, Robinson, Jackson, Robinson, Sword, Tulip, Coulter, Prior.

Foulkes(79)
Payne(83)

Billy Foulkes marked his home debut by heading in the 27th goal Newcastle had scored in eight home games that season.

This was the first of just two games for Hugh Cameron, who deputised for the injured Bobby Mitchell.

The visitors were without SJP old boy Albert Stubbins, recovering from surgery on a leg injury in a Tyneside hospital. A delegation of Anfield players and officials visited him before the game.

1951 Newcastle reserves were in Central League action at Blackburn Rovers, winning 3-2 thanks in part to a quick-fire brace from 17 year-old debutant forward Alex Tait.

There was a memorable Leeds debut for Blaydon-born Frank McKenna, who netted twice.

John Charles also scored for the visitors and dominated the game, reports describing how he, "coasted away with the touch of a master and stood out as man of the match".

Football magazine "Soccer Star" commented that "United's singing supporters were reduced to a dry-mouthed crackle" when Bobby Tambling opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge after 35 seconds, closely followed by Barry Bridges hitting a second.

A third followed through Albert Murray before Suddick got one back, and Jimmy Fell scored direct from a corner.

Just when United looked to force a point, the home side broke away again and Bridges claimed a second with nine minutes left.

After scoring for the reserves the previous Saturday, Rocky Hudson made his senior debut from the bench, replacing fellow midfielder Terry McDermott.

Ex-Magpie George Eastham was at SJP - but only in his role as the Potters' assistant boss, injury preventing him from playing.

1979 Oldham Athletic (a)

Division Two
Clements(5)
11,486
Poor marking allowed Kenny Clements to head past Steve Hardwick and the Latics held on for the win, with Peter Withe's header against the bar the closest United came to an equaliser.

Meanwhile the reserves took a point from a home fixture with Preston North End, John Connolly firing home from close range in a 1-1 draw. He was one a number of senior players involved, along with Terry Hibbitt, John Bird and Tommy Cassidy.

Jack Charlton's Magpies made it ten league and cup games without defeat, but were denied victory at Kenilworth Road after conceding a late leveller.

Charlton blamed goalkeeper Kevin Carr, telling reporters "He's causing himself problems and he's causing the rest of the lads problems. If he goes on like this he is going to force me into a situation where I will have to go out and buy another goalkeeper.

"We are giving away so many things at the near post when he is involved, it is become embarrassing."

A wretched day at Boothferry Park on and off the field, as a meek United side made it ten games without victory, hoisting the white flag to a Tigers side who had the worst defence in the division.

Away fans clashed with police meanwhile, following bizarre attempts to move them to another terrace in mid-game.

Peter Beardsley indulged in a  unique goal celebration after his penalty conversion at the Gallowgate End - running to son Drew, a ball boy behind that goal.

His fellow Geordies were less happy; Lee Clark submitting a transfer request, an injured Alan Shearer watching from the sidelines and smoggies boss Bryan Robson labelling David Ginola a diving cheat. As if.

2001 Those hardy fans watching United's U17s at Bullocksteads were rewarded with a 5-1 trouncing of Coventry City.

Although the Sky Blues took an early lead, striker Lewis Guy hit a nine minute treble en route to scoring all five home goals.

Alan Shearer's 97th strike in a black and white shirt was one of his very best, crashing a swerving volley past Peter Schmeichel from the right edge of the box at the Gallowgate End.

Craig Bellamy's brace wasn't bad either, with the Welsh forward supplying a stunning volley to open the scoring against John Gregory's side. He then rounded things off nicely by outpacing the Villa defence and threading the ball through the advancing Schmeichel's legs.

Olivier Bernard made his first team debut as a late substitute for Laurent Robert.

One corker and two gifts was how we summed up the trio of goals Pompey scored in a 197 second period during the first half.

As part of a Premier League initiative aimed at improving understanding of disability, Claudio Cacapa spent the day before the game blindfolded - unfortunately he still seemed to be similarly attired as he failed to prevent the visitors' second and third strikes....

Michael Owen's shot was deflected in by future Magpie Sol Campbell to reduce the arrears, but United failed to build on that and a Steven Taylor rick for Pompey's fourth cemented their first victory on Tyneside since 1949.

Obafemi Martins capped a fine individual and team performance with the goals that put United up to the dizzy heights of 14th.

JFK's side had started the game bottom of the league but three vital points against the Premier League's form team took us above the mackems on goal difference.

A claim of racial abuse by Joey Barton directed at Gabriel Agbonlahor emerged after full time, but no formal complaint was made to the FA.

2009 In an attempt to quell the anger about the renaming of St. James' Park, Managing Director Derek Llambias said:

"We are just basically looking to explore and maximise our revenues. We have a great opportunity at the moment because our sponsorships are coming to an end - a kit sponsor, shirt sponsor and then we have stadium rights sponsor.

"Our intention is to put a package together that would include, for instance for the stadium rights, a jumbo screen included in that sponsorship which is great for the fans as well."

That eventually translated itself into a deal with Wonga - although their adverts jostled for space within SJP with Sports Direct, who paid a pittance for their many spots. Maximising revenues?

2012 Newcastle reserves shipped six goals without reply to Spurs at their Enfield base. Future Magpie Andros Townsend appeared for the home side.

A first Premier League win of the season arrived at the eleventh time of asking: Ayoze Perez glancing Ki's free-kick home.

Three precious points dragged United up two places into 17th, despite Rafa Benitez having to make three enforced substitutions following a trio of on-field injuries.

2021
Following the collapse of talks with managerial target, Unai Emery, United reportedly looked to other candidates - former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe one of those heavily linked.

2023
A medical emergency saw United's PL2 game against Leicester City at their Seagrave training ground abandoned before half time.

The score was 2-2 at that point; City two up through Will Alves and Chris Popov only for a quick-fire Dylan Stephenson brace to put Newcastle level.

A member of the Foxes medical team then took ill and the game was called off. He was thankfully given the all-clear later that evening. The full game was later restaged - and ended in a 2-2 draw.

Team: Brown, Wiggett, Scott, Savage, Heffernan, Carlyon, Crossley, De Bolle, Stephenson, Huntley, Emerson. Subs n/u: C.Thompson, Harris, McArthur, Stanton, M.Ndiweni.
