Pompey test set

Newcastle's U18 side have been handed a home tie in the Third Round of this season's FA Youth Cup, Portsmouth making the trip to Tyneside by Saturday December 13th.

Date, time and venue confirmation is awaited.

This is the fourth time these two sides have been paired in this competition, the first a two-legged semi-final win for United en route to lifting the cup in 1962. Trailing 0-1 from the first leg, the Magpies then won 4-2 at Gallowgate.

The next two meetings both took place at Fratton Park; Newcastle 2-1 winners there in 2003 and 4-1 in 2016.

Competition:
Photo record: last copies

Having sold out the original run, a limited reprint of the Seen.By Carabao Cup special has now been produced, conveniently in time for the festive season.

Seen.by is a softback publication covering the work of a group of regional photographers. Issue 2 covered the events of March 16th 2025 capturing scenes at Covent Garden, Wembley and Tyneside, plus the subsequent parade.

We had copies to give away, asking
whose record as the last then-current Magpie to score a goal for the club at Wembley was ended by Dan Burn's memorable header in the Carabao Cup Final.

It was of course Rob Lee and winners were randomly selected as Carol Huddart and Mick Maher.

If you weren't successful then you can still get the perfect stocking filler for all Toon fans
here for £15 including P&P.

Premier League:
mackem (a) update

FAO anyone who has purchased a match ticket, tickets for the optional return bus transfer will remain on sale from NUFC until 5pm on Monday (November 17th).

NUFC confirm they have agreed a reciprocal away allocation of 2,528 places for both this and the return fixture at SJP.

Ticket transfers will not operate for this fixture.

Champions League:
Marseille (a) update

Update: any away ticket refund requests must be made to NUFC before Wed 19.11.2025 @ 5pm.

Further guidance for fans travelling to Marseille has been issued by NUFC and is available online now here

In summary, away tickets will be in digital format but all fans are required to assemble at a designated meeting point at 4.30pm French time to be put onto Metros for the stadium - four and a half hours before kick-off, at 9pm French time.

That meeting point is Place de la Joliette (pictured), a square situated to the north of the old port area.

NUFC stress that any fans who fail to comply with that mandatory advice and attempt to travel to the stadium independently will be denied access (except for disabled fans, who have separate arrangements).

NB: stadium regulations state that small power packs for mobiles can be taken in - something that's worth noting, given that digital ticketing will be in use.

The post-match plan is the same in reverse, with fans returned to the Place de la Joliette by metro following a hold-back of unspecified duration.

Agreement with these measures looks to have been a condition of receiving an away allocation, Atalanta fans treated similarly in OM's last home CL tie. Ajax meanwhile didn't receive any tickets after the French authorities imposed a blanket travel ban on their supporters.

Toon trophy haul

The annual Sport Newcastle dinner was staged in the city on Thursday, with Newcastle United named Team of the Year for their Carabao Cup Final success and
Dan Burn carrying off the Sporting Success Award.

The Wor Jackie Award went to Newcastle United forward Sean Neave, while academy prospect Les Yeutembip was selected as one of 11 Sport Newcastle Rising Stars.

Euro 2028:
Take five for Gallowgate

Wednesday evening saw the launch of the 2028 European Championship Finals, staged between June 9th and July 9th at nine venues across the United Kingdom.

SJP is one of those, with five fixtures listed to be played on Tyneside - four group stage games and one last 16 tie:

Mon 12.06.2028
Thu 15.06.2028
Sat 17.06.2028
Tue 20.06.2028
Sun 25.06.2028

Kick-off times will be advised in 2027.

U21s:
Euro tests for U21s

With no scheduled PL2 fixtures until January, Magpies U21 coach Adam Lawrence and his side now focus on cup football, with action in two different competitions.

Next week sees United play their first and second group stage games in the Premier League International Cup, bringing Spanish and French opposition to Tyneside.

Tuesday (18th) sees Real Sociedad visit Whitley Park for a 7pm kick-off, before PSG will provide the opposition at the same venue on Friday (21st). That's also a 7pm start.

Admission details are awaited.

The Magpies conclude their Group C ties by hosting Croatia Zagreb in December and Benfica in January.
The format of the 32 team competition means that none of the 16 Premier League teams meet, but each host four continental sides.

Update:
World Cup event

As part of this year's Books on Tyne Festival, Guardian football writer Jonathan Wilson is talking about his latest book, "The Power and the Glory - A New History of the World Cup" in Newcastle later this month.

Venue is Newcastle City Library on Friday November 28th at 2pm and tickets are available now online here

Internationals:
Old boy boosts DRC

Although still without Yoane Wissa, DR Congo's hopes of a first World Cup Final appearance since 1974 persist, thanks to a 1-0 play-off semi-final victory over Cameroon.

Ex-Magpie Chancel Mbemba struck in the final seconds of the tie in the Moroccan city of Rabat to set up a play-off against Nigeria this coming Sunday.

The victors of that will represent Africa in a qualifying tournament staged in the USA during the March international break - another potential commitment for Wissa in addition to the African Cup of Nations in December/January.

Book:
Belfast boy

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at 30.
2025/26 CL away tickets are 50 or less.

On This Day in History
14th November

Born Or Died:

1906 Billy Halliday born, Dumfries.
(1927-28)

High-scoring inside left who had followed his elder brother Dave into the Queen of the South team as a 16 year-old.

Signed by Newcastle from the Doonhamers for £1,000 in November 1927, Billy's sole first team outing was a 0-3 loss at Leicester shortly after his arrival, replacing the injured Tom McDonald.

Although brother Dave was by then playing for the mackems, Billy opted for a return to Scotland and joined Third Lanark in the summer of 1928.

Later moves saw him play for Welsh side Connah's Quay, Exeter City and finally Cuthbert Wanderers back in Dumfries.

1923 Thomas Walker born, Cramlington.
(1941-54)

Centre half who was converted to a winger following his arrival at SJP in October 1941 from local side Netherton Juniors.

Appearing for United in wartime matches, Tommy's league debut came in a 3-1 home win over Coventry City in 1946 and his first goal came at Manchester City in May 1947.

A broken arm sustained in training limited his involvement in the 1947/48 promotion season but he returned to become a regular at outside right and an ever-present in the 1950/51 season, when The Magpies beat Blackpool in the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

Twelve months later and Tommy collected his second FA Cup medal after again playing in every round of the competition, deploying the pace he had once shown as a sprinter to devastating effect.

Moving on to Oldham Athletic in February 1954 at a cost of £2,000 Tommy had a stint with Chesterfield before a second spell at Boundary Park ended with his retirement from the game in April 1959.

Living in Middleton near Manchester, Tommy ran a newsagents. He passed away in June 2005.

1991 Philip Airey, born, Amble.
(2007-12)

Academy striker who joined the Magpies at the age of ten and netted on his U18 debut against Bolton Wanderers in March 2007.

Phil debuted for the reserves against Everton at Widnes in November 2008 - but in the right back slot that he'd been converted to in the U18 side.

Restored to a striking role, he scored four times for the U18s in the 2009/10 season, getting off the mark for the reserves against Hartlepool United at Gallowgate.

However, a knee ligament injury sustained against Leeds in November 2010 sidelined Phil for three months - returning to net twice in an FA Youth Cup victory at Reading.

Airey's senior debut for Newcastle then arrived later that month, replacing Peter Lovenkrands in the 78th minute of a 1-3 FA Cup Third Round loss at Stevenage.

Never near the first team again, a loan to Hibernian in August 2011 saw Phil reunited with ex-Magpie coach Colin Calderwood - by then in charge at Easter Road.

However, injury restricted his involvement to a single senior appearance (the closing 18 minutes of a 1-3 defeat at Kilmarnock) for Hibs and he returned to SJP  month later.

Featuring in several United reserve friendlies, Airey's competitive return came against Wigan reserves in January 2012, as he entered the final six months of his deal.

Loaned out to Conference side Gateshead later that month, Phil returned over the Tyne after just two appearances and was
released by United in Summer 2012.

Joining Blyth Spartans after an unsuccessful trial with Spennymoor Town, he netted his first goal for the Northern Premier League side against Hednesford Town in August.

Following an unsuccessful trial with St. Mirren in July 2013, Airey returned to Croft Park for a second season and continued to feature at full back on occasion.

Later at Whitley Bay, Durham City, Newcastle Benfield and Ashington in the Northern League, Phil subsequently played in the Northern Alliance for Shilbottle CW, Newcastle University, Gosforth Bohemians, Alnmouth United, Gosforth Bohemians, Red Row Welfare, Alnwick Town and Stobswood Welfare.

1996 Adam Laidler born, South Shields.
(2013-16)

Left back who came to United's attention when attending coaching sessions run by the club's Foundation in 2012.

Handed a debut at U18 level from the bench during a 4-3 home win over Aston Villa in March 2013, Adam agreed a scholarship deal ahead of the following season.

Fourteen appearances for the U18s during the 2013/14 campaign were then followed by selection for the U21 squad who took part in the annual Hong Kong Sevens.

Injury to Liam Gibson saw Laidler make a competitive reserve debut in January 2014 against Blackburn Rovers at Gallowgate.

Selected as a left winger for a friendly visit to Ashington days before his 19th birthday, Adam helped himself to a brace in an 8-1 success against the Colliers.

Released by United in 2016, he later played in the Northern League for Ashington, West Allotment Celtic, Team Northumbria, Blyth Town, Whitley Bay and Heaton Stannington.

2001 Harrison Ashby born, Milton Keynes. (2023-present)

Arriving at the end of the January 2023 transfer window, Newcastle paid a claimed £3m to secure Scotland U21 right back Harrison from West Ham United.

The Magpies had attempted to sign Ashby the previous summer only for the Hammers to block the move as they unsuccessfully tried to persuade him to sign a new deal.

Joining West Ham aged 11, his senior bow came in an EFL Cup tie during September 2020 with a handful of Europa League and Premier League outings the season after.

Spending time on his fitness once a Magpie, Harrison's first outing in a black and white shirt saw him net in a PL2 victory over Norwich City in April 2023.

A senior bow then came in a pre-season win at Gateshead followed by a goal at Rangers days later and a place on the plane for the tour of the USA.

Ashby joined Championship side Swansea City on a season-long loan, scoring his first senior career goal against Preston North End but often named on the bench.

Harrison again featured in pre-season for Newcastle before a season-long switch to second tier QPR in 2024.

Featuring in pre-season but no nearer to a first team bow despite a shortage of full backs, he was restricted to outings for United's U21 side as an over-age player.

2001 Antonio Cordero
born, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. (2025-present)

Newcastle reportedly saw off the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Ajax to sign Malaga's highly-rated teenage winger during June 2025.

Cordero had made the first of 60 senior appearances in September 2023; six goals from 39 games helping Malaga to avoid relegation from the second tier in 2024/25 - after which he confirmed that he wasn't interested in extending his contract.

The 2025/26 season saw Cordero join Belgian side KVC Westerlo on a season-long loan but his pitch time was almost non-existent and also saw him omitted from successive international squads.

An incident-packed game saw the Addicks reduced to ten men just before half time when McAllister was dismissed.

Imre Varadi then scored a brilliant individual goal, running the length of the pitch to net.

Tragically, "Shoot" TV cameras weren't present though, Tyne Tees taking the London Weekend TV "Big Match" instead.

That condemned frustrated Toon followers to watching Malcolm Macdonald's Fulham draw 1-1 with Walsall in Division Three.

Their final "home" game before returning to The Valley didn't go according to plan though, as two first half efforts from Gavin Peacock put Newcastle firmly in control.

Garry Nelson briefly gave the Addicks hope, but Steve Howey sealed victory in a match that was sponsored by Reg Lee, father of Robert, who played against his former club.

Alan Shearer's hamstring problem however saw him replaced at half time and without him the home side struggled, Wednesday claiming a point when Petter Rudi converted via a ricochet off defender Laurent Charvet, the goal later going down as an OG.

SJP was also treated to a rare sight - that of a bare-chested female streaker on the pitch.

Three home defeats in a week and three consecutive PL losses made a miserable start to Graeme Souness' third month in charge.

It could have been a different story, Newcastle on the wrong end of some marginal decisions and wasting various first half opportunities to cancel out Wayne Rooney's well-taken opener.

2005 There was an easy 5-1 win for the reserves at Kingston Park over Aston Villa despite falling behind.

Shola Ameobi and Michael Chopra both scored twice in the first half, Shola completing his hat-trick after the break.

2009 French media reports claimed Newcastle were to sign 29 year-old free agent midfielder Fabrice Pancrate - formerly at PSG.

2017 1-0 up in six minutes, it all went wrong for Ireland in Dublin, beaten 1-5 by Denmark in their World Cup Qualifying playoff second leg, after a 0-0 draw in Copenhagen.

Newcastle's Ciaran Clark appeared for the home side, alongside former Magpie Daryl Murphy and future SJP resident Jeff Hendrick.

2019 Newcastle's
Joe White started for England U18s as they beat Russia 5-2 at the Pinatar Arena in Spain.

In Portugal meanwhile, Matty Longstaff made his England U20 bow from the bench during a 4-0 win over the hosts in Agueda.

2022 United U21s lost 0-4 to Bristol City in a Premier League Cup tie at the Robins' Failand training centre.
