In what is recognised as our first bona-fide competitive post-war match, there were full debuts for Bobby Corbett, Bobby Cowell, Charlie Crowe, Joe Harvey, Ray King, Tot Smith, Charlie Wayman, George Hair and Jackie Milburn. 

Completing the side, Henry Clifton and Albert Stubbins represented the pre-war era, as for one season only the FA Cup was played on a two-legged basis - in order to provide both competing sides with gate revenues.

The Tykes needed to win by three clear goals at Oakwell the following Wednesday in order to advance - and did exactly that.

Frank Brennan was penalised for handball but Ronnie Simpson then saved Ken Horton's spot-kick when it was 1-0.

Having lost 0-3 at SJP earlier in the season, this draw with City was followed by a fine 5-4 replay victory at Maine Road. And having got the taste for winning there, Newcastle returned to collect the points in a 2-1 league success. 

1963 United's FA Cup Third Round tie against Bradford City was postponed due to a frozen pitch at Valley Parade.

The game eventually took place 61 days later, after the cold snap that brought the whole country to a standstill finally relented.

1972 United's Malcolm Macdonald and future Magpie Mick Channon both scored in a 2-0 win for England U23s over Wales at Swindon Town's County Ground.

The initial step of what was Newcastle's road to a first Wembley final since 1955 was this meek home draw against the amateurs from the Isthmian League.

Ahead when Pat Howard headed home a long throw from Malcolm Macdonald, an awful second half display saw Rod Haider deservedly level from close range.

An outraged Joe Harvey said, "we were disgraceful - absolutely pathetic! We didn't deserve to get through, we never even started to play football."

United won the replay 4-0 the following Wednesday afternoon, played for safety reasons at Watford's Vicarage Road, rather than Hendon's compact Claremont Road home.

Third Division City overcame second tier United, with an 18 year-old Ian Rush marking his first appearance at SJP by netting in a deserved cup victory.

1990 Swindon Town Chairman Brian Hillier and Manager Lou Macari were charged by the FA over allegations of match betting. 

The match was Swindon's 5-0 FA Cup defeat at St. James' Park in January 1988.

A rare piece of giant-killing for Jim Smith's Magpies, as the Division One Rams were dumped out at SJP.

John Anderson showed inspirational form and set up an opening goal for Mick Quinn, who spectacularly lobbed Peter Shilton. 

Mark Stimson then converted a free kick soon after, to partially atone for his own goal nightmare at Oldham in our previous game.

Steve Watson made only his second senior start and became the youngest-ever United player to feature in an FA Cup match, at 16 years and 279 days.

The only low point of the day was the racial abuse that Rams striker Kevin Francis endured from some home fans in the East Stand.

This televised tie proved to be the final game of Kevin Keegan's first spell as boss. 

Charlton turnstile operator Robert Lee netted on his first return to the Valley since September 1985, having scored the Addicks last goal before they abandoned the ground. 

Mark Kinsella ensured a replay but strange things were afoot at the post-match press conference and by the time Charlton came to SJP for the replay, Kenny Dalglish was in charge of the home side.

Back to back home victories over Spurs and Liverpool left United fourth in the Premiership, but their good form didn't extend to an FA Cup tie against second tier opposition. 

Dave Jones marked a century of games in charge of Wolves by seeing his side outfight and outwit the visitors and build up a two goal lead - only to then surrender that just before half time. 

The black and whites failed to extend that revival after the break though and were unable to reply once behind again.

Both halves of NUFC.com were equally aghast as Sir Bobby Robson's "arrogant and overpaid rabble took complacency to new found heights."

2009 Jonny Godsmark claimed two assists and one strike as United reserves beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0 at Whitley Park.

After teeing up Nile Ranger and Frank Wiafe Danquah, Godsmark then rounded off the scoring for Richard Money's side.

A weakened line-up was depleted further by Shola Ameobi's ridiculous dismissal but United were better with ten men, Sylvain Marveaux and Nile Ranger missing chances before the Championship hosts struck again late on.
