Daniel Farke's side travel to Tyneside on Wednesday for an 8.15pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports Cricket.

Newcastle go into the game unbeaten in their last 11 home league and cup fixtures.

The Magpies haven't lost any of the most recent five games against Leeds, but won just one. The other four all ended in draws, including each of the last three meetings.

Football Bobbles will have a stall outside the Trent House from 5.15pm. Card payments accepted.

(They'll be in the same spot for the forthcoming Bournemouth and Manchester City home games).

Team: Dan Burn, Anthony Elanga, William Osula, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth remain out. Jacob Murphy is doubtful with a hamstring issue.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 7/10
The draw 29/10
LUFC win 19/5

New customers receive a £50 bet when staking £10 on the PL (T's & C's apply). Find those markets online here

LUFC: Dan James is injured, with Joe Rodon, Jayden Bogle, Sebastiaan Bornauw and James Justin all doubtful.

Sean Longstaff is recovering from a foot problem and could be on the bench against his former club.

The Whites come to SJP unbeaten in their last seven games, having drawn each of their most recent three fixtures.

On the road so far this season, Leeds have won once (at Wolves), drawn three (Brentford, mackems and Liverpool) and lost the other six. That trio of stalemates have come in their most recent three games on the road.

The first PL meeting of the sides ended goalless at Elland Road back in August.

Referee: Michael Salisbury - first NUFC appointment for the Yorkshire official since he took charge of last April's 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Gallowgate.

Had to come to London
:
West End Boys

Following a successful run at Newcastle's Theatre Royal - with more dates there next summer - "Gerry & Sewell" are heading to London's West End later this month.

Filmed as "Purely Belter", Jamie Eastlake's stage adaptation of Jonathan Tulloch's book, "The Season Ticket" tells the tale of two Toon fans and their quest for their holy grail of Newcastle season tickets, despite being totally skint....

Tickets are on sale now for performances at the Aldwych Theatre between January 13th and 24th 2026, with seat prices starting from just £10 available online here

(FAO anyone buying theatre tickets may wish to note that NUFC are in action on Jan 13th, 18th and 21st).

PS: We had a pair of London theatre tickets up for grabs in a free competition, asking you to predict the final score at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

There were multiple correct entries that necessitated a random draw. We'll publish the winner's name here when
he answers his email...

Update:
White flight

League One Leyton Orient confirmed on Monday that the loan agreement for Newcastle midfielder Joe White had ended with immediate effect.

The 23 year-old made a season-long switch to the O's in July, but played just 46 minutes during three substitute appearances in the league, plus a trio of cup outings.

Injury contributed to that lack of pitch time, but after declaring himself fit in November, Joe featured in just one senior fixture - an EFL Trophy loss to Plymouth Argyle.

White's four competitive Newcastle games came during the 2023/24 season, all in the Premier League as substitute. His most recent public sighting as a Magpie were in the friendly loss at Celtic back in July 2025.

PS: Also heading back to SJP is reserve goalkeeper Aidan Harris, following his half-season loan at Coleraine.

Update:
Familiar faces

After suffering eleven straight league and cup defeats, ex-Magpie Alun Armstrong stood down as manager of National League Gateshead on Friday, but continues in a football development role at the club.

His replacement is fellow SJP old boy Rob Elliot, who left the International Stadium in October 2024 to become Crawley Town boss, but lasted barely six months in that post.

Another former Newcastle goalkeeper found himself a new club on Friday, Bournemouth signing free agent Fraser Forster for the remainder of the season.

37 year-old Forster has been without a club since leaving Spurs last summer and hasn't played competitively since December 2024.

Forster was on the bench for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Arsenal and  should be involved this coming Saturday when the Cherries visit SJP in the FA Cup.

Update:
Loan lads

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Seville):
A bad day at the office for the goalkeeper, part of the side beaten 0-3 at home by Levante in La Liga on Sunday.

Trevan Sanusi (Lorient):
A 1-1 home draw with Metz in Ligue 1 on Sunday saw winger Trevan remained unused on the bench.

Antonio Cordero (Cadiz)

The midfielder began on the bench for Sunday's La Liga 2 visit to Deportivo la Coruna, appearing for his debut in the 52nd minute. It ended 2-2.

Matt Targett (Middlesbrough):
Boro returned to winning ways at the Riverside on Sunday, defeating Southampton 4-0 in the Championship. Targett completed 90 minutes at centre half and claimed an assist.

Joe Brayson (Morpeth Town):
Ilkeston (a) NPL Premier Division, Saturday.

Travis Hernes (Groningen):
The midfielder played for Groningen U21s in late 2025 as he continued his recovery from injury. It's unclear whether he'll be available when Groningen's first team return to Eredivisie action at home to Breda on Saturday.

FA Cup:
Bournemouth (h)

Newcastle kick off this season's FA Cup campaign at SJP on Saturday when they host the Cherries in a Third Round tie.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm kick-off and if the scores are level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time will follow ahead of a penalty shootout if required.

The winners will take their place in the Fourth Round draw, staged before the Liverpool versus Barnsley Third Round tie kicks off at 7.45pm on Monday week, January 12th.

Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, Andoni Iraola's side host Spurs on Wednesday, looking to end their eleven game winless run in the Premier League.

The Cherries reached the Quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season, having also made the last eight in 2021. Between those though came a trio of exits at the hands of lower league opponents - including non-league Boreham Wood.

Referee: Thomas Bramall - second Magpies posting of the season for the Sheffield whistler, following last month's 2-2 PL home draw with Spurs.

Newcastle ran out 2-0 winners on Tyneside in 1973, drawing 0-0 down in Dorset in 1992 and then losing the replay on penalties after a 2-2 draw that followed an abandonment due to fog days earlier.

Carabao Cup:
Manchester City (h)

The Magpies are in Carabao Cup Semi-final first leg action on Tuesday week (January 13th), against Manchester City.

It's an 8pm kick-off at SJP live on ITV1 and Sky Sports.

The Citizens were allocated 4,893 places.

Both sides entered in the Third Round of this season's competition as a consequence of their Champions League involvement.

Eddie Howe's side have defeated Bradford City (4-1), Spurs (2-0) and Fulham (2-1) on Tyneside as they attempt to defend the trophy they lifted at Wembley last March.

Pep Guardiola meanwhile oversaw away wins at Huddersfield Town (2-0) and Swansea City (3-1) before seeing off Brentford (2-0) at the Etihad Stadium.

Two goals from Harvey Barnes gave the Magpies a 2-1 success over City in the PL at SJP back in November.

City have lost Josko Gvardiol with a broken leg, joining fellow defenders Ruben Dias and
John Stones on the injured list and prompting the recall of Max Alleyne from loan at Watford.

Also sidelined are Mateo Kovacic, Savinho and Oscar Bobb, while Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri remain in action at the AFCON Finals with Egypt and Algeria respectively.

Although he appeared for Bournemouth in an earlier round of this season's Carabao Cup, Antoine Semenyo would be eligible to play against us assuming his transfer to Manchester City is concluded in time.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

On This Day in History
6th January

Born Or Died:

1952 Bobby Shinton born, West Bromwich.
(1980-82)

Striker Bobby had scored goals at a lower level before being brought in to boost our efforts at climbing out of Division Two.

After spells with Walsall, Cambridge United and Wrexham (where he faced Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup), Shinton signed for First Division Manchester City.

He struggled at the higher level however, and was loaned out to Millwall before joining Newcastle for £175K - barely nine months after arriving at Maine Road for £300K.

One goal in his first ten games saw United win just once to end 1979/80 on a low note, with the mackems sneaking promotion and popular Peter Withe leaving for Aston Villa.

The following season was equally painful, with Shinton ending up as our top scorer with a paltry seven league goals - the last of which was scored in November!

Missing through injury from February 1981, Shinton returned the following season to find striker Imre Varadi in situ - Mick Harford having come and gone in his absence.

He struggled on until March 1982 when he rejoined Millwall for £15K, with injury forcing him to quit the Lions in May 1983.

Moving into the non-league with Worcester City, Bobby later had a spell as manager of Newmarket Town and worked for Aspinalls' Building Supplies in Willingham, Cambridge.

1964 Death of Ray Robinson, 68.
(1919-20)

1972 Death of Albert Gosnell, 91.
(1904-10)

1989 Andrew Carroll born, Gateshead.
(2005-11, 2019-21)

Centre forward who first came to our attention when scoring after just 15 minutes of his U18s debut in March 2005.

Handed a reserve team debut that season, Andy featured at both levels in 2005/06 and made an impact in the FA Youth Cup.

It was a similar story the following season, with Glenn Roeder's promotion from his role
at the Academy to first team boss seeing Carroll training with the first team squad.

November 2006 saw him appear off the bench for the final moments of United's 1-0 UEFA Cup victory in Palermo, becoming our youngest participant in a European fixture.

He made five more sub appearances that season, while the following campaign saw him scoring his first senior goal in a home friendly against Juventus, beating Gianluigi Buffon.

Secured on a contract until 2011, Sam Allardyce allowed Carroll to join Preston on loan, with an international call-up seeing him score on his England U19 debut (having turned down a previous Scotland call-up).

Twelve appearances for PNE brought him just one league goal (at home to Leicester City) and a red card, as Carroll tried to get to grips with Championship football.

Returning to SJP in January 2008, Carroll made five sub appearances for Newcastle that season, under three managers (Allardyce, Pearson and Keegan).

Kevin Keegan handed him his first senior start for the club on the final day of the season away at Everton, but by the time he was seen on a pitch again, KK was history.

A foot injury incurred in the close season saw Carroll out until October, returning from the bench in a home draw with Manchester City.

After two more substitute runouts, Joe Kinnear rewarded Andy for scoring five goals in three reserve fixtures by handing him a second start in the FA Cup Third Round tie away to Hull City.

He went on to score three times for United in the Premier League; at home to West Ham and away at both Manchester City and Stoke City, the latter one under the command of Alan Shearer.

However, none of those goals resulted in wins and Newcastle were duly relegated, amid much media attention over possible transfer bids for Carroll.

In the event none of them came to fruition and he partnered Shola Ameobi at West Brom in our opening Championship fixture, scoring the first of four goals in the first half of that season, away at Blackpool.

Carroll also made his debut at U21 level for England at the start of the 2009/10 season, winning his first cap against the Netherlands in Groningen.

He then scored twice in his next outing - a 6-3 demolition of Macedonia at Coventry's Ricoh Arena - also appearing at Wembley Stadium in a 1-0 win over Portugal.

Less impressively, he was involved in a fight in a Newcastle nightclub in the early hours of a Monday morning in December 2009 - just two days before a league game away at Coventry City.

Arrested on suspicion of assault and taken to a nearby police station, he was later released without charge.

That followed an incident in September 2008 when the player accepted a Northumbria police caution arising from an assault claim made by a woman.

Another alleged assault came in October 2010 but proceedings were later dropped and Carroll escaped a custodial sentence for the nightclub incident - pleading guilty to common assault and being fined.

That same month saw him bailed to live with club captain Kevin Nolan in Darras Hall - where his Range Rover was torched on the drive of the house.

On the pitch his career flourished, with a successful promotion campaign ending with Carroll netting 17 league goals and two in the FA Cup before making an instant impact in the Premier League.

A hat-trick against Aston Villa shot him to prominence and after scoring the only goal at Arsenal and another against Blackburn Rovers, Fabio Capello gave him a first senior cap at Wembley against France.

Carroll ended 2010 with four goals in five games before injury saw him miss the wins against Wigan and West Ham. Meanwhile the club confirmed in early January they had turned down a bid from Tottenham.

United appeared to have resisted all offers for Carroll until the final hours of the transfer window when a £35m approach from Liverpool was finally accepted.

Most agreed an offer of that magnitude was too good to turn down but only if the money was re-invested in future signings - which given the lateness of the move wouldn't be in the mid-season window (it's claimed that Liverpool's offer of a part-exchange involving striker David Ngog was rejected).

The August transfer window saw United make a small net profit, leaving the £35m totally untouched, although there were farcical claims from the club hierarchy that agents' fees had accounted for a large chunk of the surplus millions.

Carroll, meanwhile, struggled to make any impact for new Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish and failed to find the net in both games against his old club, making the fee received seem even greater, although mainly beneficial for the owner....

Dalglish exited Anfield in Summer 2012 and Carroll followed him in late August, when new boss Brendan Rodgers allowed him to join West Ham on loan - contradicting his earlier comments that a temporary switch was out of the question.

That became a £15m permanent switch in June 2013 but injury prevented him from kicking another ball for them until January 2014 - co-owner David Sullivan publicly regretting the transfer in a BBC interview.

Carroll's career as a Hammer continued to be hampered by injury - something that also curtailed his England carerr - and by January 2018 he'd failed to net against Newcastle in nine outings, three for Liverpool and a further six for West Ham.

Managing 14 appearances in 2018/19, a surprise return to Gallowgate for free on a one year deal came in August 2019.

After a gradual return to fitness, Carroll made his first appearance back in the black and white as a late substitute in the goalless home draw against Brighton.

He finally scored his first goal after returning, three days before his 32nd birthday with a late goal in the Gallowgate End during the 1-2 defeat to Leicester City.

Andy's second departure from SJP came in July 2021 after no new deal was offered.

Training with Reading ahead of the following season, a short-term deal was agreed during November 2021 but he moved on to fellow Championship side West Bromwich Albion the following January.

Returning to Reading the following season, Andy signed an extended deal but made an unexpected departure to French Ligue 2 side Amiens in August 2023.

He then moved to another Ligue 2 side, Bordeaux in September 2024 but returned "home" in July 2025, joined National League South side Dagenham & Redbridge close to his Essex home.

1998 Ben Pollock born, Bolton.
(2014-16)

Central defender who joined Newcastle's Academy in summer 2013 on a two year scholarship - after spells at Leeds United and Middlesbrough.

Ben's Lancastrian birthplace is due to his ex-smoggy father Jamie, who at that time was part of the Wanderers midfield.

Pollock made a competitive debut at U18 level for the Magpies in a 1-2 loss to the mackems at Whitburn in August 2014.

And his first appearance for the U21s came in a 1-3 defeat by Derby County at Whitley Park during January 2016.

However, he wasn't retained by United and agreed a professional deal with League Two Hartlepool United after a trial.

Two outings in the Football League Trophy followed, but he failed to make a league appearance as 'Pools were relegated.

Moving on from Victoria Park, Pollock appeared on trial at Grimsby Town and Harrogate Town, later playing for Dunston UTS and Billingham Synthonia.

Joining Hereford in October 2019 after a successful trial, he then signed for Boston United, Spennymoor Town and Chester, returning to Spenny in 2024.

A heavy Goodison Park pitch proved to be United's undoing, Jimmy Settle netting from close range early on for the Toffees.

Jock Peddie then headed home a left wing cross from Jack Fraser to level, before John Proudfoot shot past Matt Kingsley.

The same player repeated the feat to give Everton a 3-1 lead before United reduced the arrears just before the interval - Fraser converting a penalty awarded after he was brought down by George Eccles.

There was no further addition to the score in the second half, with The Liverpool Mercury reporter observing that the referee "stopped the game in order to remonstrate with a section of the crowd."

1951 While United's first XI were progressing in the FA Cup, the reserves were in action at Goodison Park.

However, they went down 0-4, two weeks after losing a First Division fixture 1-3 at the same venue.

In only their second season of league football, the Posh prevailed at a misty SJP, with centre forward Terry Bly getting the late winner.

He later described the goal thus:

"It was a mis-kick, to be honest. I kicked the ground as much as the ball but there was a hard frost and, when keeper (Dave Hollins) dived, the ball bounced over his hand and rolled in. It stopped about a foot after the line."

Kevin Keegan's dream FA Cup draw proved to be a defining moment in his playing career, as Liverpool's Mark Lawrenson caught and dispossessed him despite giving KK a two-yard head start.

That incident was cited as the moment when Keegan decided to retire at the end of that season - a decision he was reveal in public on his 33rd birthday in February 1984.

Played on a Friday night and televised live by the BBC, this tie is remembered for the superb support offered by 12,000 travelling Geordies, despite the mismatch on the field.

This was immortalised on Match of the Day's opening titles, with a shot of 'Reds keeper, Bruce Grobbelaar, conducting the away end.

Sweet revenge for Magpies midfielder Gary Megson on his return to the City Ground.

The midfielder had been bought by Brian Clough, who decided that he "couldn't trap a medicine ball" and refused to pick him for the first team. United then signed him.

Despite being played on a Sunday, the game wasn't televised, having been delayed by 24 hours to allow the pitch to improve.

1992 United sent a side to the Federation Park home of local league side Dunston Federation Brewery, to inaugurate new floodlights.

A young reserves XI included a three man veteran back line of Ossie Ardiles, Tony Galvin and Derek Fazackerley. David Robinson scored in a 2-1 loss.

The highlight was a one-woman protest about the new lights by a neighbour, who stood in her garden and yelled abuse at the 500-strong crowd, who were most amused.

1993 Newcastle Reserves beat Alnwick Town 10-0 in a Northumberland Senior Cup tie, Alan Thompson and Steve Watson both hitting hat-tricks. Andy Hunt added two, Darren McDonough one and Belisle notched an OG.

2003 The reserve league game against Everton was called off after bad weather made the Gateshead Stadium pitch unplayable. So no change there then...

2005 Tommy Craig's Reserves took a point from their first visit to Damson Park, home of non-league Solihull Borough and on this occasion, Birmingham City reserves.

0-1 down half time, Guy Bates levelled for United but the main story for the media present was the non-performance of City's want-away midfielder Robbie Savage.

An own goal and a brace from Alexander Isak gave United a comfortable victory at the stadium of plight.

Redecorating parts of their ground in our honour, the hosts were equally generous on the pitch; netting an own goal, losing possession in their box for the second and conceding a stupid penalty for the third.
