United's second string are in PL2 action at Portman Road, trailing 0-1 at half time to a 41st minute strike from Town
midfielder Finley Barbrook.

Unbeaten this season with six wins and two draws, the hosts were reduced to ten men in the 58th minute when defender Walker Shabazz-Edwards received his second yellow card of the game.

West Ham (a)

Newcastle attempt to end their seven game winless Premier League run on the road at the London Stadium on Sunday.

It's a 2pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

NB: Away ticket transfers for this game end earlier than usual and must be completed by 2pm on Saturday
.

The Magpies are making their ninth appearance at this unloved edifice of a sports stadium, having lost just one of the previous eight; winning five times and drawing twice.

Team:
Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa remain unavailable.

WHUFC:
Konstantinos Mavropanos, Niclas Fullkrug and Oliver Scarles are all missing due to injury.

Ex-Magpie Callum Wilson has netted once for his latest club in six Premier League appearances (one start). The forward failed to score in any of his five outings against Newcastle during his time as a Bournemouth player.

The Hammers have lost all four of their PL home games so far this season - and the final one last season - the first time since 1931 they've suffered that ignominy.

Referee: Robert Jones - second Toon posting of the season for the Merseyside whistler, having taken charge of our 0-0 draw at Bournemouth and ignored a blatant shirt pull in the box on Nick Woltemade. That doesn't inspire confidence...

Thanks to everyone who entered our score prediction competition in association with Pitch Publishing.

We had two copies of
"Pass Master", a new memoir from former Magpie midfielder, Liam O'Brien and 44 of you correctly guessed that we'd defeat Spurs 2-0.

That required a random draw to decide the winners, from which John Dunn and Graham Robinson.

Carabao Cup:
More home comforts

Newcastle's reward for defeating Spurs in the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup is a home tie in the last eight against a Fulham side beaten 2-1 at St. James' Park earlier this month:

Quarter-final draw:

Arsenal v Crystal Palace
Cardiff City v Chelsea
Manchester City v Brentford
Newcastle v Fulham

Quarter-final ties are scheduled to take place in the week commencing Monday December 15th, coming between our Sunday PL visit to the mackems and the PL home game against Chelsea the following Saturday lunchtime.

This is the third time that the Magpies and the Cottagers have been paired in the League Cup, Newcastle 3-0 winners at Gallowgate in the Fourth Round during January 1975.

Fulham then gained their revenge in October 1982, winning both legs of a Second Round tie: 2-1 on Tyneside and then 2-0 on the banks of the Thames.

This is N
ewcastle's 13th appearance in the quarter-finals and the fourth successive season that Eddie Howe has guided his side into the last eight:

1974/75 Chester City (a) lost 0-1 (1st replay)
1975/76 Notts County (h) won 1-0
1995/96 Arsenal (a) lost 0-2
1997/98 Liverpool (a) lost 0-2

Academy:
Youngsters advance

Newcastle U17s have progressed to the knockout stages of this season's Premier League Cup, with three wins from as many games seeing them win their group.

This is the second successive season that Newcastle have reached the last eight of this competition, exiting at the hands of Manchester United in 2024.

Also in the quarter finals are Blackburn Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Liverpool, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham.

News of the draw is awaited.

Old boy:
Defender sighted

Former Newcastle defender Jamal Lewis is back in the game, signing a short-term contract at Championship side Preston North End.

The 27 year-old became a free agent last summer when his Magpies contract expired, having not played since his loan spell at Brazilians Sao Paulo ended in November 2024.

Toon Teens in action

England and Scotland U17s are currently in European Championship qualifying action in Scotland, both sides playing their second game on Friday.

With Newcastle's George Mair in goal and midfielder Sam Alabi captaining the side, the young Lions lost 0-1 to Lithuania at Cumbernauld - a result that means they now cannot qualify for the finals

Scotland and Magpies defender Oliver Goodbrand then led the Scotland side beaten 0-2 by Sweden at Airdrie a short time later, collecting a booking for his troubles.

Tuesday afternoon had seen England and Scotland meet at Airdrie, the Scots winning that 1-0 with all three young Magpies starting for their respective sides.

The third and final set of games on Monday then sees England against Sweden and Scotland face Lithuania.

Elsewhere, United's Lesecond Yeutembip is with England U16s at the Football Federations Cup in the Turkish city of Antalya.

The 15 year-old defender was in the starting line-up for their opener on Thursday, England defeating Wales 5-1.

Next up is a meeting with hosts Turkey on Saturday and then Portugal on Tuesday.

Out now from Pitch Publishing is the definitive biography of United icon, Bill McCracken, penned by renowned Magpies club historian Paul Joannou.

The Belfast-born defender served Newcastle for 15 seasons, winning three titles and one FA Cup while generating headlines worldwide for his revolutionary offside tactic.

Bill's life in football then extended for over half a century in managerial and scouting roles, included that of transfer advisor to Magpies supremo Stan Seymour in the 1950s.

ST holders have 24 hours to apply, 24 hours to determine success, 48 hours to buy.

Success is based on the loyalty point total calculated from applications received. Any applications from ST holders with less points are entered into a ballot, which will have taken place before tickets go on sale.

The purchase window is divided into two sections determined by a loyalty point division that alters for each game - those successful applicants above that point division get a couple of hours head start.

Note that emails from NUFC confirming success may arrive after the purchase window opens - if you think you qualify because of your points total, just log on and complete your purchase regardless.

Tickets not bought by successful applicants within 48 hours are offered to unsuccessful applicants with the next highest loyalty points total. NUFC contact them directly.

Friends and family groups remain, travel groups and away season tickets are gone.

2025/26 PL away tickets remain at 30.

On This Day in History
31st October

Born Or Died:

1898 Tom Phillipson born, Ryton.
(1919-21)

Centre forward signed in December 1919 from local side Scotswood for 500 after returning from army service in World War I.

An England schoolboy international and prolific scorer as a youngster, Tom debuted in a 0-4 loss at Everton during January 1920  but took seven games to break his duck before netting against Sheffield Wednesday at Gallowgate that April.

Kept out of the side for the first half of the following season, a return of one goal from five outings saw him fall from favour at SJP and United recouped their initial outlay from Swindon Town in May 1921.

They in turn doubled their money when selling him on to Wolves in late 1923; Tom helping them to the Third Division North title that season.

Regaining his goal touch, Tom remained a mainstay of the Wolves side until 1928 before rounding off his career at Sheffield United, Bilston United and Walsall.

Settling in Wolverhampton, he later served as Lord Mayor of the town and his death was recorded there in November 1965.

1910 Thomas Mooney born, Tollcross, Glasgow. (1936-44)

Coming to prominence with Airdrieonians after an earlier undistinguished spell at Celtic, outside left Tom was pursued by various English clubs after impressing for a Scottish League select XI in two friendlies.

Newcastle won the race for his signature and paid out 2,650 for Mooney in October 1936, putting him straight in the side for a 1-0 home victory over Leicester City.

The 1938/39 campaign would prove to be Tom's most effective, playing in 42 of the club's 46 games in league and cup and finding the net on twelve occasions.

With the outbreak of World War II causing the cessation of the league programme in September 1939 however, Mooney's career in football was effectively at an end.

Returning to Airdrieonians as a war guest, Tom signed for Morton in 1944. His death was recorded in December 1981.

1935 Jimmy Hill born, Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.(1957-58)

Makeweight in the deal that saw Jackie Milburn cross the Irish Sea to join Linfield in June 1957, midfielder Jimmy had started his playing career with the local YMCA side and then intermediate side Carrick Rangers.

Debuting in a 3-1 home win over Spurs in August 1957, "Tiger" Hill chalked up his first goal during a 4-1 success at Birmingham City in what was only his third appearance.

Losing his place in late 1957, Jimmy played just once more in the first team that season and left for Norwich City in a 3,000 deal after barely a year on Tyneside.

In five years at Carrow Road, Hill helped the Canaries to promotion from Division Three, collected a League Cup winners medal - scoring in the final - and was capped at senior level by Northern Ireland.

Jimmy later admitted that that he'd come close to leaving Norwich in 1958 due to a persistent ankle problem, a move to Mansfield Town almost going through.

Everton paid 25,000 for his services at the start of the 1963/64 season but Hill's time at Goodison was blighted by injury and he made just seven appearances.

Joining Port Vale in 1965, Hill returned to his native Northern Ireland three years later as player-manager of Derry City.

After a stint in charge of Linfield he left the game in 1972 and ran a sports shop in his home town - also managing local side Carrick Rangers between 1988 and 1991.

1948 John Craggs born, Flinthill, Durham.
(1964-71 & 1982-83)

Right back who was an understudy to David Craig for much of his time at SJP, debuting in a 1-1 draw at Everton in October 1966.

The 1968/69 season was John's most successful in terms of games played, with 20 appearances following his return to the first team after a 22 month absence.

That included a trio of a Fairs Cup games: both legs of the Setubal tie and the Ibrox meeting with Rangers, while Craggs was also on the bench for the home leg of the final.

Seeking regular football, John joined Division Two Middlesbrough in August 1971 for 60,000 going on play almost 500 times in over a decade at Ayresome Park.

The Magpie connections remained though, playing under Stan Anderson and Jack Charlton and alongside Graeme Souness, Irving Nattrass, Stuart Boam and David Mills - the latter who was his best man.

Available on a free transfer in the summer of 1982, Craggs returned to SJP and made a second debut amid the clamour of Kevin Keegan's first game at home to QPR.

A dozen more first team matches followed (plus reserve outings) before John's final outing, a 0-1 defeat at Cambridge in April 1983. He also returned to Boro for his testimonial in November 1982 - a game recalled for a freak eye injury that forced guest player Kevin Keegan to miss five Newcastle games.

Moving to Darlington as Quakers player-coach in 1983, John later played in non league football for Crook Town and worked as a car salesman in Redcar.

1988 saw Craggs join the coaching staff at Hartlepool alongside fellow SJP old boys Pop Robson and Bob Moncur, taking over as caretaker boss when the latter departed.

Involved in a sports shop on Teesside with Willie Maddren, he ended up working for the company that became Sports Direct after the business was bought out.

1956 Eddie Edgar born, Jarrow.
(1974-76)

Goalkeeper who joined United as a junior in 1972, turning professional two years later.

Eddie's only first team appearance was in a 2-4 FA Cup Quarter Final defeat at Derby County in March 1976 when deputising for the unavailable Mick Mahoney (below).

Moving on to Hartlepool United that summer, Eddie played over 80 games for 'Pools in three seasons and also went on loan to New York Cosmos where he counted Pele among his team mates.

Joining Gateshead in 1980, Edgar emigrated  to Canada later that same year, following one of his uncles to Kitchener in the Ontario province of Canada.

Playing part time for London City, Eddie became involved in youth coaching and oversaw the development of son David (a defender), who was coveted by clubs in England and Scotland before opting to become a Magpie at the age of 14.

David played 23 first team games for United between 2006 and 2009, moving on to Burnley, Swansea City, Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United and Vancouver Whitecaps.

The sporting connection between Eddie and the North East continued in 2017, when nephew Philip Edgar left Canada and joined the Whitley Warriors ice hockey team.

1991 James Tavernier born, Bradford.
(2007-14)

Fullback who joined Newcastle's Academy at the age of 15, following his release by Leeds United's youth setup and subsequent relocation to Tyneside with his family.

Debuting for the U18s as a substitute in a 4-1 home win over Huddersfield Town in February 2007, Tav's reserve bow came in a Central League Cup tie against Sheffield United at Whitley Park in September 2008.

And a year to the day, he debuted in senior football as a young Magpie XI lost 0-2 in the League Cup at Peterborough United.

His next game came in the same competition away to Accrington Stanley the following August, after which a loan move over the river to Gateshead in January 2011 saw him play 13 times for the Conference side.

Spending the 2011/12 campaign on loan at a trio of League One clubs - Carlisle United, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons - Tav signed a new three year contract at SJP.

By his 21st birthday, James had played three more games for Newcastle: in the Europa League away to Atromitos, at Old Trafford in the League Cup and away to Reading in the Premier League.

Two more Europa League starts, the FA Cup embarrassment at Brighton and a Premier League substitute outing in the 3-7 mauling at Arsenal then came the next season.

Loaned to Shrewsbury Town in August 2013, Tav played just twice before a foot injury saw him heading back to Tyneside. A move to Rotherham on loan three months later though was more successful and his five goals and form helped the Millers win the League One playoffs at Wembley.

With a year of his SJP deal remaining, it had been excepted that James would make his loan move to Rotherham permanent but he chose instead to join fellow Championship side Wigan - who offered better terms.

A change of manager at the DW Stadium saw Tavernier fall out of favour however and he was loaned out to League One side Bristol City in January 2015.

Joining Glasgow Rangers on a three year deal that summer, James scored on his debut against Hibernian and netted the goal that clinched a top flight return in April 2016.

Agreeing a new three year deal at Ibrox, Tavernier was appointed Club captain during 2018 and by his 34th birthday had made 534 appearances, scoring a remarkable 135 goals, many from free kicks and penalties.

Younger brother Marcus came through the Middlesbrough Academy as a midfielder, making his senior debut for the Teessiders during 2017 and moving to Bournemouth after a loan spell at MK Dons.

With neither side having a league fixture, second Division Newcastle beat their First Division visitors in a Saturday kickabout.

The Burnley Gazette correspondent was distinctly unimpressed:

"The game was not one about which much need be said....The Newcastle ground is a very funny one, having a slope. The weather too on Saturday was very wet and this would partly account for Burnley's downfall."

Team: Watts, White, McDermid, Miller, Auld, Stott, Lee, Connell, Smellie, Aitken, Wardrope.

Hardinge's equaliser sent the teams in level at the interval, before the visitors "gave a grand exhibition of the passing game", according to The Berwickshire News reporter.

(accounts vary as to the identity of United's first and last scorers - Hardinge recorded as scoring both by the Berwickshire News).

Drilled by Bill McCracken, United's reliance on the offside trap didn't go down well with the Villa Park faithful.

It was a case of lost in the mist for United at Goodison Park, a blanket of fog lying across the ground and meaning that those watching from the press box were barely able to see events on the field.

The Toffees continued an amazing scoring spree in October, this eye-catching result following 3-2, 5-1, 9-3 and 3-2 victories.

That run would end a week later with a 0-0 draw against Huddersfield Town before the avalanche restarted with 7-2 and 9-2 wins.

The scoreline has only been repeated once in Newcastle's history (at West Ham in 1986) and remains our heaviest top flight away defeat; the 0-9 loss at Burton Wanderers in 1895 in Division Two.

The U21s extended their unbeaten run in PL2 to six games in front of 2,500 fans at SJP but had to settle for a point after a dubious late mackem equaliser.

It was 1-1 in the fourth minute of time added on; goalkeeper Alex Bass coming up for a corner kick and deflecting his own blocked header into the United net via a hand.
