2023/24:
Moor the merrier! Burnley 1 Newcastle 4
Youtube
footage is online here
"Europe again, Ole
Ole" was the chant from the away end at Turf Moor on
Saturday, as Newcastle dealt a sizeable blow to Burnley's hopes of
avoiding relegation and enhanced their own European qualification
bid.
Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all added to their goal tallies with Isak also missing from the spot before
Dara O'Shea netted a late consolation for Vincent Kompany's Clarets.
Eddie Howe took charge of United for 100th time in the Premier League
against his former side, and once Wilson opened the scoring, victory
number 49 was assured.
Unbeaten in their last three games, the hosts made a bright opening
and found space in front of a visiting defence where Emil Krafth
partnered Dan Burn in the absence of the hamstrung Fabian Schar.
The Clarets were unhappy when contact between Bruno and Lorenz
Assignon in the United box caused the latter to tumble but referee
Anthony Taylor instantly waved away penalty claims and no VAR
stoppage followed.
The Magpies initially struggled to retain possession, but that all
changed on 19 minutes when Tino Livramento burst forward
and Jacob Murphy set up Isak, whose shot was blocked only for Wilson
to convert the rebound.
Longstaff then doubled the lead after 35 minutes after Lewis Hall and Wilson
combined for Murphy to beat his man and roll it to Longstaff, who finished well. Anthony Gordon pulled the ball back for Bruno to stroke home from 15 yards five minutes before the break as United's first half dominance continued. Isak's
run of penalty conversion for the Magpies then ended when Arijanet
Muric guessed right after Gordon was brought down in the box by Josh
Brownhill on 51 minutes.
The spot kick award prompted a brief discussion between Wilson
and Isak, with the former making an unsuccessful attempt to claim
the ball and kick.
A VAR check in the aftermath of the saved penalty then confirmed
that a suspected encroachment didn't occur.
The Swedish striker made amends just two minutes later though smashing the ball home
from close range in front of the away end after Murphy's squared
pass evaded Wilson on the edge of the six yard box. More could have followed but the Clarets managed to keep the score down to four before they got their goal from an
86th minute corner, O'Shea heading home.
By then the fit-again duo Miggy Almiron and Joelinton had both made
returns from the bench; the Brazilian roared on to the field after
ending a four month absence during which he's signed an extended
contract.
Former Claret Nick Pope meanwhile appeared among the unused
substitutes after five months out of action.
Victory took Newcastle up to sixth above Manchester United who travel to Crystal Palace on Monday night. Chelsea lie two points behind the Magpies after
their 5-0 thumping of West Ham 5-0 Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino's side need three more big wins to have any hope of
bettering our superior goal difference, should we finish level on points.
More to follow.
Team: Dubravka, Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Hall, J.Murphy (Anderson 68), Guimaraes, Longstaff (Joelinton 76), Wilson (Barnes 68), Isak (Almiron 76), Gordon (Ritchie 85). Subs n/u: Pope, Dummett, A.Murphy, White. Booked: Wilson, Anderson. Goals: Wilson 19, Longstaff 35, Guimaraes 40, Isak 55.

21,781 including 2,300 travelling fans. Referee: Anthony Taylor
- a fourth
Newcastle game of the season for the official from the Manchester
area - none of which have been on Tyneside.
Starting off with the 2-2 draw at Wolves, he returned for our 2-4
loss at Liverpool and 3-2 victory away at Nottingham Forest.
VAR: John Brooks
Eddie Howe:
"It was a
tough start but we thought it might be with the position Burnley are
in, and this is a difficult ground to play in.
"But once we settled it
down, we played some good football - I thought the first goal did
that. We never looked back from that moment.
"Scoring goals is the most
difficult thing to do in football, so if we can be regular
goalscorers then we've got a chance of winning games. We know we
have to improve defensively, but I thought we were pretty solid
today."
On Alexander Isak:
"The penalty miss can happen. He's been really good from the
spot this year, but I'm happy he got his goal just after, that'll
give him a big lift."
On Joelinton and Miggy Almiron's return:
"It's massive for us and
that's something that has really hurt us during the season. To have
that quality ready, chomping at the bit to play.
"I've got to look after those two players as well, I've got to
make the right decisions and introduce them at the right times to
get their load right.
"The quality they have is
undoubted and the impact on the team is undoubted. I think the
feeling in pre-game was in part because they were there and the
group got a lot stronger."
"It always depends on the
games but my plan was to maybe give them 15, 20 minutes today for
the two outfield players. It was the right step up for them and
we'll see how they train this week."
On European qualification
hopes:
"We’re determined to finish as high as possible.
"With 10 games to go we
tried to reset our targets and since the international break you’ve
seen a general improvement in our performances.
"We’ve got to keep that going for the last three games of the
season. But I think you could sense there was a real desire
today.
I sensed that in training during the week and that’s because we
have a really good group full of leaders and winners. They’d love
to get back to Europe, I’m sure.
"We're in there fighting for those places, it gives us a much
better position than before the game. Now we go into a tough
three-game week, starting with Brighton."
Stats:
Four more goals takes United's total on the road so far this
season to 30, the fourth-highest total that they have amassed
in the Premier League:
2001/02
34 goals (19 matches)
2022/23 32 goals (19 matches)
1993/94 31 goals (21 matches)
2023/24 30 goals (17 matches)
1995/96 28 goals (19 matches)
With 48 games played
in all competitions so far, United have scored 95 goals (excluding
penalty shootouts) this season. They've only exceeded that total in
two previous PL seasons:
1996/97 93 goals (51 games)
1994/95 95 goals (56 games)
2023/24 95 goals (48 games)
1993/94 97 goals (48 games)
2001/02 106 goals (53 games)
Martin Dubravka
played
his 150th Premier League game for
Newcastle
while Dan Burn completed a century of appearances in
all competitions as a Magpie.
Following home and away victories against Aston Villa, Fulham and
Sheffield United, Newcastle secured their fourth Premier
League double of the season.
Alexander Isak netted his 20th PL goal of the season and 24th
in all competitions but lost his 100% spot kick record as a Magpie.
Before this game, he had netted all seven PL penalties (all eight
including the FA Cup).
The last Magpie to miss a PL penalty was Joe Willock at home to
Manchester City in May 2021 (although he did net the rebound.
Between that one and today, we racked up 18 consecutive spot kick
successes.
Isak follows Andy Cole (once), Les Ferdinand (once) and Alan Shearer
(four times) in reaching the magic 20.
Callum Wilson reached double figures for the season with his
ninth PL strike of 2023/24.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his sixth goal this season, all in the PL - his highest tally as a Magpie.
Sean Longstaff's fifth PL strike of 2023/24 extends his
season record in all competitions to seven this season.
Newcastle scored four goals in one game at Burnley for the
first time in their history. They last won by three clear goals at
Turf Moor in September 1948.
United collected their 142nd away win in the PL from their 553rd
away game. This was the nineteenth time they have scored four goals
or more away from SJP and the ninth 4-1 success.

Latest:
Sandro still on
track
for August return
From NUFC, Thursday:
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a
suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent
Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting
Rules.
He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his
future conduct.
The banning period is fully
suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season, meaning he will be
available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of
an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football
Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.
Provided that he does not commit
any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension
period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.
As acknowledged by the FA in the
independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of
assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully
cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and
unprecedented. Sandro made full admissions as to his betting
activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other
evidence to support misconduct
proceedings.
Sandro is continuing to follow a
therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club's full
support and will continue to train with his teammates.
Italian international Tonali admitted 50 breaches of FA Rule E8
for placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12
October 2023.
His bets included four Newcastle games that he played in and one he
was on the bench for, backing his side to win in all cases:
An accumulator bet involving either Newcastle to beat Brighton on
September 2 2023 or Newcastle to beat Burnley on September 30 2023
An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat Brentford on
September 16 2023
A single bet on Newcastle to beat Manchester City on September 27
2023
An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat West Ham on October 8
2023.
With
no extension to his original ban, that leaves him free to resume his
playing career on August 27th.

Japan tour claim
The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been given the
opportunity to play two pre-season games in Japan against J-League
sides in July.
They name the possible opponents as Yokohama F Marinos and Urawa Red
Diamonds, with a date for the latter opponent listed as July
31st.
No official confirmation of either game has been received as yet,
with Urawa fan sites also mentioning the possible Magpies meeting in
the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, United's post-season opponents Spurs have announced a
kickabout against J-League side Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27th.
Kobe's current squad includes former Magpie Yoshinori Muto.
Our first visit to Japan followed the 1982/83 season, playing four
games in three cities - Toyko, Okayama and Nagoya - en route to
lifting the Japan Cup.
And thanks to Japanese Mag Simon Moran for reminding us of a
more recent game we played in Japan, losing 1-3 to Gamba Osaka in
August 1996.

Born Or Died:
1923 Leslie Porter born, Gateshead.
(1942-49)
Wing half who signed for Newcastle from Redheugh Steel Works
in early 1944 and
made his debut in a War League home derby against the mackems that April.
Agreeing professional terms later that same year, Leslie made a handful of
other wartime appearances and also featured for the club's Central League
side.
However a senior team debut never came once Football League fixtures resumed
and he was released in March 1949.
Porter signed for York City and played for the Minstermen until the end of the
1953/54 season, when he joined North Shields.
However his time at the Robins was to be blighted by injury, fitness problems
having hampered him while at Bootham Crescent.
Leslie's death was reported in the Teesside area during November 2002.
1959 Andrew James Parkinson born, Johannesburg, South
Africa. (1978-79)
Having begun his career in South Africa with the Highlands and
Dynamos United clubs, centre forward Andy moved to SJP in the tail end of the
1977/78 relegation season.
After substitute appearances in successive home draws against Manchester
United and Birmingham City though, he was consigned to reserve team football.
Parkinson had to wait a year until his third and final outing from the bench -
a 5-3 home win over Charlton Athletic in the Second Division.
Released at the end of that season, Andy tried his luck at Peterborough
United, but lasted barely a year at London Road before making a switch to the
USA.
Appearing for the Philadelphia Fury, his next stop was in Canada with the
Montreal Manic in Canada. Gaining US Citizenship, Andy later made two
appearances for the national side and played for Team America, New York Cosmos
and Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
He then returned to his native South Africa.
1990 Death of George Hannah, 61.
(1949-57)
Scorer of one of the goals that defeated Manchester City at Wembley in the
1955 FA Cup Final.
1994 Javier Manquillo born, Madrid, Spain. (2017-24)
Rafa Benitez boosted his defensive options in July 2017 ahead
of our top-flight return by paying Atletico Madrid £4.25m for their right
full back Manquillo.
The Spaniard signed a three season deal to end his decade-long
association with Los Colchoneros - although he was previously with city rivals
Real as a youngster.
Debuting for Atletico's first team in 2011, Javier spent the
2014/15 campaign loaned to Liverpool before a temporary posting to Olympique
Marseille the following season.
2016/17 then found him back in the Premier League on a season-long loan switch
to the mackems, scoring his first senior goal on his 20th and final appearance
for them.
Joining his new team mates at pre-season training in Ireland,
Javier made his Magpies bow at Preston North End in a friendly before debuting
in the Premier League opener at home to Spurs.
Alternating with DeAndre Yedlin at right back, Manquillo looked more
comfortable as part of a back five formation ahead of the departure of Rafa
Benitez.
The arrival of Steve Bruce saw Javier competing with new signing Emil Krafth,
signing a four year contract extension in June 2020.
Things went awry the following season however, Manquillo one of several
players affected by the COVID pandemic before an ankle injury sidelined him
again.
Fit again in March 2021, he was unable to force his way back into the side but
the following season saw him feature more regularly; netting his first Toon
goal in the game that saw Ronaldo's second debut for Manchester United at Old
Trafford.
A solid and established back four didn't include the injured Manquillo and
after regaining fitness he had to be content with the odd substitute outing in
the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.
A reunion with Benitez then followed in January 2024 at Spaniards Celta Vigo,
although poor results saw the manager depart not long after the player had
arrived on an 18 month contract.

off their season with a convincing victory over a City
side they'd drawn 0-0 against a week before.

A goal-laden encounter for Geoff Allen's Testimonial.
The Magpies winger had been forced to call time
prematurely on his career due to a knee injury and
assembled a varied Football League side to take on United.
Familiar faces on the scoresheet for the all- stars
included future and former Newcastle favourites Tony Green
and Alan Suddick - both on Blackpool's books at the time.
Fellow Seasider Tommy Hutchison netted, as did Boro's John
Hickton and West Ham's Jimmy Lindsay, while Trevor
Brooking also featured for the All Stars.

While the Magpies were just playing out their season, Alan
Mullery's Seagulls earned the points that ensured their
promotion - although thoughts that they had won the league
were later dispelled when Crystal Palace beat Burnley.
Estimates of how many Seagulls made the trip vary, but
given that over 18,000 fewer fans had seen our midweek
victory over Bristol Rovers, it was a sizeable number (the
Albion squad also saw that game, having travelled up on
the Wednesday).
After a win achieved in weather conditions that varied
between sun, rain and hail the victorious Albion side
returned to the south coast that night on a specially
chartered Brighton Belle Pullman coach.
Your correspondent obtained the autograph of a bearded
Martin Chivers, who was briefly with Albion after more
memorable stints at Southampton, Spurs and Norwich City.

Four defeats in a row had seen United drop out of the

That caused him to miss our Easter Monday visit to
Huddersfield Town 48 hours later, where a point from a 2-2
mathematically confirmed our return to Division One.
The post-match victory parade will live long in the memory
as the players, draped in scarves, bowed down before the
Gallowgate corner and saluted delirious fans on all four
sides of SJP.

Around 14,000 fans watched the match live on a big screen

1999 Newcastle reserves regained the Northumberland

"It's been a dreadful season."
Those were the words of United boss Glenn Roeder, after
his side extended their scoreless home sequence to 470
minutes and made it just one win in their last ten games.
The day after this game he
resigned, with strong rumours already circulating that Sam
Allardyce was set to replace him.
Discarded season tickets littered the SJP pitch after this
awful defeat, as a first airing for the new home kit
failed to alter the mood on or off the pitch at SJP.

2009 A club statement
confirmed that Joey Barton had been suspended following
his Anfield dismissal and the subsequent events in the
away dressing room.
The Sun ran a story containing a witness account
from the ubiquitous club insider:
"It was unbelievable. They were like two stags.
Shearer told Barton he had made a mistake putting him back
in the team, that he thought Barton was good enough to do
it but he had shown he wasn’t.
"Joey shouted at Alan that he
was the best player at the club, which was why he had to
play him.
"Alan said he wasn’t, called
him s*** and Joey replied that he was a s*** manager with
s*** tactics.
"At that point, it looked like
they were going to have a full-scale brawl and had to be
dragged apart."
2011 Defender

2015 The
Derby Telegraph reported:
Steve McClaren will be the head coach of Derby County next
season.
McClaren has been strongly linked with a move to
Newcastle United this summer but he has assured the club
he is ready for a third crack at promotion with the Rams.
He watched on as Derby missed out on a place in the
Championship play offs on Sturday.
Afterwards, he said his intention was to be at club next
season and put things right. Plans to do that are already
under way.
Unfortunately, that report proved to be
well wide of the mark.
