Moor the merrier! Burnley 1 Newcastle 4
Youtube
footage is online here
"Europe again, Ole
Ole" was the chant from the away end at Turf Moor on
Saturday, as Newcastle dealt a sizeable blow to Burnley's hopes of
avoiding relegation and enhanced their own European qualification
bid.
Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all added to their goal tallies with Isak also missing from the spot before
Dara O'Shea netted a late consolation for Vincent Kompany's Clarets.
Eddie Howe took charge of United for 100th time in the Premier League
against his former side, and once Wilson opened the scoring, victory
number 49 was assured.
Unbeaten in their last three games, the hosts made a bright opening
and found space in front of a visiting defence where Emil Krafth
partnered Dan Burn in the absence of the hamstrung Fabian Schar.
The Clarets were unhappy when contact between Bruno and Lorenz
Assignon in the United box caused the latter to tumble but referee
Anthony Taylor instantly waved away penalty claims and no VAR
stoppage followed.
The Magpies initially struggled to retain possession, but that all
changed on 19 minutes when Tino Livramento burst forward
and Jacob Murphy set up Isak, whose shot was blocked only for Wilson
to convert the rebound.
Longstaff then doubled the lead after 35 minutes after Lewis Hall and Wilson
combined for Murphy to beat his man and roll it to Longstaff, who finished well. Anthony Gordon then pulled the ball back for Bruno to stroke home from 15 yards five minutes before the break as United's first half dominance continued. Isak's
run of penalty conversion for the Magpies then ended when Arijanet
Muric guessed right after Gordon was brought down in the box by Josh
Brownhill on 51 minutes.
The spot kick award prompted in a brief discussion between Wilson
and Isak, with the former making an unsuccessful attempt to claim
the ball and kick.
A VAR check in the aftermath of the missed penalty then confirmed
that a suspected encroachment didn't occur.
The Swedish striker made amends just two minutes later though smashing the ball home
from close range in front of the away end after Murphy squared the
ball and it evaded Wilson on the edge of the six yard box. More could have followed but the Clarets managed to keep the score down to four before they got their goal from an
86th minute corner, O'Shea heading home. Victory took
Newcastle up to sixth above Manchester United who travel to Crystal Palace on Monday night.
Chelsea lie five points behind the Magpies having played one game
fewer - they host West Ham on Sunday.

- a fourth
Newcastle game of the season for the official from the Manchester
area - none of which have been on Tyneside.
Starting off with the 2-2 draw at Wolves, he returned for our 2-4
loss at Liverpool and 3-2 victory away at Nottingham Forest.
VAR: John Brooks
Eddie Howe:
"It was a
tough start but we thought it might be with the position Burnley are
in, and this is a difficult ground to play in.
"But once we settled it
down, we played some good football - I thought the first goal did
that. We never looked back from that moment.
"Scoring goals is the most
difficult thing to do in football, so if we can be regular
goalscorers then we've got a chance of winning games. We know we
have to improve defensively, but I thought we were pretty solid
today."
On Alexander Isak:
"The penalty miss can happen. He's been really good from the
spot this year, but I'm happy he got his goal just after, that'll
give him a big lift."
On European qualification
hopes:
"We're in there fighting for those places, it gives us a much
better position than before the game. Now we go into a tough
three-game week, starting with Brighton."
Stats:
Four more goals takes United's total on the road so far this
season to 30, the fourth-highest total that they have amassed
in the Premier League:
2001/02
34 goals (19 matches)
2022/23 32 goals (19 matches)
1993/94 31 goals (21 matches)
2023/24 30 goals (17 matches)
1995/96 28 goals (19 matches)
With 48 games played
in all competitions so far, United have scored 95 goals (excluding
penalty shootouts) this season. They've only exceeded that total in
two previous PL seasons:
1996/97 93 goals (51 games)
1994/95 95 goals (56 games)
2023/24 95 goals (48 games)
1993/94 97 goals (48 games)
2001/02 106 goals (53 games)
Martin Dubravka
played
his 150th Premier League game for
Newcastle
while Dan Burn completed a century of appearances in
all competitions as a Magpie.
Following home and away victories against Aston Villa, Fulham and
Sheffield United, Newcastle secured their fourth Premier
League double of the season.
Alexander Isak netted his 20th PL goal of the season and 24th
in all competitions.
He follows Andy Cole (once), Les Ferdinand (once) and Alan Shearer
(four times) in reaching the magic 20.
Callum Wilson reached double figures for the season with his
ninth PL strike of 2023/24.
Bruno Guimaraes scored his sixth goal this season, all of
which have come in the PL - his highest tally as a Magpie.
Sean Longstaff's fifth PL strike of 2023/24 extends his
season record in all competitions to seven this season.
Newcastle scored four goals in one game at Burnley for the
first time in their history.

Latest:
Sandro still on
track
for August return
From NUFC, Thursday:
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been given a
suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent
Regulatory Commission after self-declaring breaches of FA Betting
Rules.
He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his
future conduct.
The banning period is fully
suspended for the duration of the 2024/25 season, meaning he will be
available to return to competitive football upon the conclusion of
an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football
Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.
Provided that he does not commit
any further breach of the FA Betting Rules during the suspension
period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.
As acknowledged by the FA in the
independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons, the level of
assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully
cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and
unprecedented. Sandro made full admissions as to his betting
activity, and did so in circumstances where there was no other
evidence to support misconduct
proceedings.
Sandro is continuing to follow a
therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club's full
support and will continue to train with his teammates.
Italian international Tonali admitted 50 breaches of FA Rule E8
for placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12
October 2023.
His bets included four Newcastle games that he played in and one he
was on the bench for, backing his side to win in all cases:
An accumulator bet involving either Newcastle to beat Brighton on
September 2 2023 or Newcastle to beat Burnley on September 30 2023
An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat Brentford on
September 16 2023
A single bet on Newcastle to beat Manchester City on September 27
2023
An accumulator bet including Newcastle to beat West Ham on October 8
2023.
With
no extension to his original ban, that leaves him free to resume his
playing career on August 27th.
Update:
Defensive duo eyed
Amid persistent claims of a deal reuniting Bournemouth defender Lloyd
Kelly with his former boss Eddie Howe, another free transfer
acquisition for Newcastle from elsewhere in the Premier League is
now predicted.
The defender in question is Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, who
was reportedly dropped from the side last week after making it clear
he wasn't seeking an extension to his current contract that expires
this summer.
Manchester-born to Nigerian parents, 26 year-old Adarabioyo began
his career with Manchester City and made the first of eight senior
competitive appearances against Chelsea in the FA Cup during
February 2016.
Loaned to Championship sides West Bromwich Albion in 2018/19 and
Blackburn Rovers during 2019/20, he made a £2m switch to Premier
League Fulham ahead of the 2020/21 season and faced Newcastle for
the first time in a 1-1 draw at Gallowgate that December.
Suffering relegation in that first season, left footer Adarabioyo
helped the Cottagers to make an instant return to the top-flight.
He's played 78 times in the Premier League, scoring three times and
was capped by England as a youngster up to U19 level.
25 year-old Bristolian Kelly came through the ranks at Bristol City,
playing two seasons in the Championship at Ashton Gate before a
£13m move to Bournemouth in the summer of 2019.
Also demoted from the Premier League in his maiden season as a
Cherry, he endured two seasons in the Championship before helping
his side to promotion.
To date, Kelly has made 52 top-flight appearances without finding
the net. He's also left footed.
Capped by England at U20 and U21 level, Lloyd's international
colleagues in the latter group included current Magpie, Harvey
Barnes.

Japan tour claim
The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been given the
opportunity to play two pre-season games in Japan against J-League
sides in July.
They name the possible opponents as Yokohama F Marinos and Urawa Red
Diamonds, with a date for the latter opponent listed as July
31st.
No official confirmation of either game has been received as yet,
with Urawa fan sites also mentioning the possible Magpies meeting in
the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, United's post-season opponents Spurs have announced a
kickabout against J-League side Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27th.
Kobe's current squad includes former Magpie Yoshinori Muto.
Our first visit to Japan followed the 1982/83 season, playing four
games in three cities - Toyko, Okayama and Nagoya - en route to
lifting the Japan Cup.
And thanks to Japanese Mag Simon Moran for reminding us of a
more recent game we played in Japan, losing 1-3 to Gamba Osaka in
August 1996.
Update:
Gillespie
retained
The Mail newspaper reported on Friday that Newcastle have
exercised an option to extend the contract of goalkeeper Mark
Gillespie for a further 12 months.
The 32 year-old Tynesider signed a three year deal when arriving at
Gallowgate from Motherwell in 2020 and agreed a one season extension
last summer.
Selected on the bench by Eddie Howe at various times during his
managerial reign, Gillespie's only competitive appearances for
United remain a trio of Carabao Cup starts under Steve Bruce during
September 2020.

1927 At SJP meanwhile, United Reserves lifted the

Loughlin gave the Magpies a 1-0 interval lead before
Lang and a Smith treble completed the scoring.

Newcastle's final game of the season saw Hughie
Gallacher notch his 23rd and 24th goals of the campaign.
The wee Scots lad was in the right place to head the
rebound home after McDonald's effort from an Urwin centre
struck the woodwork.
And Gallacher then wrapped things up late on as the
visitors waited in vain for an offside decision.

The visitors were already confirmed as Champions, going into
this penultimate game of the season five points ahead of

FA Cup winners Newcastle meanwhile made slight amends
for a 1-8 reverse at Goodison the previous October - aided
by the absence of Everton's top scorer, Dixie Dean.

Joe Harvey's side gained some revenge for a 0-5 FA Cup

completing the league double over the Canaries.
Ron McGarry scored despite wearing odd boots - putting a

A hat-trick from George Best, two from Kidd and one

This was in stark contrast to the Red Devils' previous game when
their goalkeeper had conceded six to West Bromwich Albion.

Bruce Forsyth may have conducted the pre-match
community singing at Wembley Stadium, but this was anything but a "good
game, good game" for United.
Losing their unbeaten Wembley record at the sixth time of
asking, Joe Harvey's side made it to halftime without
conceding, but that only delayed the inevitable.
Alec Lindsay thought he'd put the Reds ahead only
to see a questionable offside chalk his effort off, but Kevin Keegan (pictured
below) struck twice and Steve Heighway once.
United were desperately disappointing, with Malcolm
Macdonald never looking like maintaining his record of
having scored in every round of the competition.
Future Liverpool legends Terry McDermott and Alan Kennedy
were in the Magpies line-up.
Off the pitch there are a
wealth of tales that have now passed into legend: United fans
drowning out
the cheers as Emlyn Hughes lifted the Cup, emotional scenes in Trafalgar
Square, post-match brown ale drinking
in a graveyard, overnight bus
trips (fish & chips for breakfast, dinner and tea,
apparently...)
In the end though, the only Wembley success in black &
white was Brendan Foster, winning a pre-match race in a Toon vest.

Travelling Toon hordes drank Cleethorpes dry, staging a midweek
shindig before and after their heroes confirmed promotion
to the Premier League.
Those celebrations were on temporary hold after a tense first half,
before
Andy Cole shot past Mariners 'keeper Rhys Wilmot within 20
seconds of the restart.
David Kelly then sealed promotion and the title when
finishing from a tight angle in the closing seconds with
an effort that Wayne Routledge emulated at Plymouth some
17 years later when United went up again as champions.
Both United goals sparked pitch invasions, but it was mostly
good-natured and both fans and players partied after full-time,
Kevin Keegan famously pictured wearing a crown that was plonked on his head by a supporter.
TV cameras entered the dressing room post-match
to capture KK getting a good soaking and Sir John Hall
promise to give "Man United" a
"run for their money". Heady stuff.

2002
Newcastle won 3-2 at Old Trafford in the first leg of
their U17 playoff Final.
Goals from Calvin
Zola and Lewis Guy (2) put the young Magpies three up at half
time,
the hosts replying through Kieran Richardson and David
Poole - the latter on 88 minutes.
Not without
precedent at this particular venue, the referee produced
an astonishing five minutes of injury time but the Toon youngsters held on for a tremendous
victory in front of around 1,000 spectators.
The visitors were without midfielder Ross Gardner
due to an England U17 call-up.

United
won their first away league game for nearly six months as a
seven-game winless run thankfully came to an end.
The result was as unexpected as
Fulham's 4-1 win at SJP back in November as the
victory saw United creep back up the table above
Birmingham and Blackburn into 12th spot.
Darren Ambrose,
Patrick Kluivert and Shola Ameobi put us three goals to the good
before Tomasz Radzinski's late consolation for the home
side. Sections of this victory were filmed and later cut into the
"Goal" film.

The Premier League board rejected the
bid for dispensation from Newcastle to allow Glenn Roeder to become their permanent manager, releasing this statement:
The Premier League Board has considered
Newcastle United's inquiry regarding the potential appointment of Glenn
Roeder as their Manager.
Premier League Rules require that Managers
hold the UEFA Pro Licence and do not provide for any dispensation.
The
only way the Board would be prepared to allow Newcastle United to appoint
Glenn Roeder as Manager without the Pro License is if so directed by member
Clubs.
In the event of permission being sought,
sufficient support from Clubs would have to be obtained and a formal
resolution tabled at the forthcoming Premier League AGM.
That final paragraph
proved key - member clubs allowing special dispensation on the grounds that
ill health had prevented Glenn from completing the Pro Licence that he'd
originally begun in 2003.
2010 The U18s wrapped up their home
league programme with a 4-1 win over Leeds.
Ryan McGorrigan scored twice, while Sammy Ameobi and Brad Inman were also
on target.
2011 Twelve months on and the U18s were away at Sheffield United to
close off the season with a 1-1 draw - Ryan McGorrigan finding the net once
more for Newcastle.

Having conceded ten goals in three games, Newcastle at least stopped
the rot at the Boleyn Ground.
However, away wins for Aston Villa
and Wigan ensured that the spectre of relegation remained with two games to
play. The Latics and mackems had three left and were three points and one
point behind, respectively.
A linesman's slip may well have cost Alan Pardew's side the win though: a
shot from Papiss Cisse was judged not to have crossed the line before Winston
Reid cleared the ball.
One of four TV replays from different angles looked to show
the whole of the ball over the line - the linesman slipping over at that
point, so unable to award a goal.

What would be the final home game of the Rafa
Benitez era was eventful on and off the field, due in no small part to
the TV-inspired 7.45pm Saturday start time.
Newcastle more than matched the title
challengers: twice coming from behind before a dubious free kick allowed Liverpool to steal a
barely deserved win.
Although Manchester City remained strong favourites, Liverpool fans -
including some in home areas - celebrated this victory as if they were
Champions.
