Newcastle's penultimate PL home game of the season sees them host
the Blades this afternoon.
It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm kick-off, with the
visitors selling their entire 3,204 allocation. Chris Wilder's side need to avoid defeat to
prolong their relegation fight, although a draw would leave them needing a mathematic miracle, or Nottingham Forest having their points deduction increased
upon appeal.
Team: Nick Pope, Miggy Almiron,
Joelinton and Kieran Trippier are still
sidelined but could yet play some part in our remaining games.
Speaking on Friday, Eddie
Howe confirmed that Miggy could be in contention to face Burnley.
Joe
Willock,
Lewis Miley, Matt Targett, Sandro
Tonali,
Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles won't feature again this season.

SUFC: Max Lowe, Chris Basham, John Egan, Rhys Norrington-Davies,
Daniel Jebbison, Tom Davies and George Baldock remain unavailable,
with Oli McBurnie the latest addition to that list.
Jayden Bogle and James McAtee are both doubtful.
Ahead of their visit to Tyneside, Wilder's side lost 2-4 at Old
Trafford in the PL on Wednesday night - their thirteenth loss away
from Bramall Lane this season.
The Blades have won one away game - 3-1 at Luton Town - and drawn
three: 1-1 at both Brighton and Villa and 2-2 at Bournemouth. From
that you can deduce that they've failed to keep a clean sheet on the
road.

success
Stoke City U21s 1 Newcastle U21s 2
Two early goals gave
Newcastle U21s victory in their penultimate PL2 game of the season
on Friday night - aided by two red cards for the home side.
The Magpies made a rapid start at the Bet365 Stadium, taking a tenth minute lead through Dylan
Stephenson on his return to the side following the end of his
loan spell at South Shields.
1-0 then became 2-0 within two minutes thanks to Kyle Crossley,
before the visitors were forced into a change when Lucas De Bolle
replaced the ailing Jamie Miley.
City reduced the arrears on 28 minutes when Jack Griffiths beat
Aidan Harris from close range, but ended the half a man short after
goalkeeper Tommy Simkin saw red for a challenge on Stephenson
outside the box.
Ten men then became nine for Stoke midway through the
second period; Jaden Dixon dismissed in the aftermath of a tussle
with Stephenson.
Team: Harris, Shahar, Charlton, C.Thompson, Heffernan, J.Miley (De Bolle
21), Crossley, Stanton (McArthur 75), Stephenson, Al.Harrison, Diallo. Subs

Update:
Bruno update
Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed recent media claims of a
limited duration release clause for Bruno Guimaraes in his
latest contract - reportedly a fee £100m payable in full by
the end of June:
"Having that was well planned and structured by the club, in
a sense that there’s a sort of finish point.
"We don’t want constant
speculation, it’s not healthy for the player or for us. It goes
without saying we want to keep him, I want to build our team around
him.
"His form has been very
good — he seems very happy and settled. He’ll be thinking about
a very busy summer ahead, where hopefully we can take the team with
him a big part of it. But we aren’t in control of that so let’s
see.”
2024/25:
Japan tour claim
The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been given the
opportunity to play two pre-season games in Japan against J-League
sides in July.
They name the possible opponents as Yokohama F Marinos and Urawa Red
Diamonds, with a date for the latter opponent listed as July
31st.
No official confirmation of either game has been received as yet,
with Urawa fan sites also mentioning the possible Magpies meeting in
the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, United's post-season opponents Spurs have announced a
kickabout against J-League side Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27th.
Kobe's current squad includes former Magpie Yoshinori Muto.
Our first visit to Japan followed the 1982/83 season, playing four
games in three cities - Toyko, Okayama and Nagoya - en route to
lifting the Japan Cup.
And thanks to Japanese Mag Simon Moran for reminding us of a
more recent game we played in Japan, losing 1-3 to Gamba Osaka in
August 1996.
Update:
Gillespie
retained
The Mail newspaper reported on Friday that Newcastle have
exercised an option to extend the contract of goalkeeper Mark
Gillespie for a further 12 months.
The 32 year-old Tynesider signed a three year deal when arriving at
Gallowgate from Motherwell in 2020 and agreed a one season extension
last summer.
Selected on the bench by Eddie Howe at various times during his
managerial reign, Gillespie's only competitive appearances for
United remain a trio of Carabao Cup starts under Steve Bruce during
September 2020.

2024/25:
Europe: latest
Assuming that the Premier League misses out on an additional fifth
Champions League place available due to restructuring of the
competition next season, qualification for Europe in 2024/25 looks
like this, as much as we're able to discern:
There are seven guaranteed European spots; four in the Champions
League, two in the Europa League and one in the Conference League.
Those were originally allocated as follows:
PL 1st-4th in Champions League
PL 5th in Europa League
FA Cup winners in Europa League
Carabao Cup winners in Conference League
Liverpool currently have the Conference League place as Carabao Cup
winners, but will take a Champions League place if they finish in
the Premier League top four, which looks almost guaranteed.
That frees up the Conference League place to the team finishing
sixth in the Premier League.
The FA Cup winners take a Europa League place - unless they have
earned a Champions League place by virtue of a top four Premier
League finish.
If Manchester City win the FA Cup and finish in the top four of the
Premier League, they will enter the Champions League.
The sixth place finishers would go into the Europa League spot
reserved for Manchester City, with the Conference League spot
occupied by the team finishing seventh.
If Manchester United win the FA Cup, they'll take a Europa League
place unless they finish in the top four and collect a Champions
League slot.
Should they finish in the Conference League position, they would
take the Europa League spot resulting from a Wembley success
instead.
If Manchester United finished eighth and therefore only qualified for
Europe by winning the FA Cup, the team in seventh spot wouldn't gain
entry to any European competition.
Aston Villa have qualified for the semi-finals of the Europa
Conference League (known as the UEFA Conference League next season).
If they won that competition, they would occupy an additional spot
in the Europa League reserved for the Conference winners only -
regardless of nationality.
Should Villa snag a Champions League or Europa League spot via their
Premier League finishing spot though, the Europa League place
reserved for them as Conference League winners would not be
reallocated to another Premier League team.

27th April |
Born Or Died:
1877 Andy Aitken born, Ayr, Scotland.
(1895-1906)
Nicknamed ’Daddler’, Aitken had played for the Elmbank,
Thistle and Parkhouse clubs in his home town before moving to England in July
1895, joining Newcastle amid interest from Newton Heath and Preston North End.
Making a goalscoring debut in a 3-0 home win over Loughborough Town two months
later, midfielder Andy helped United gain promotion to the First Division in
1897/98 - his third season as a Magpie.
Winning his first Scotland cap against England at Crystal Palace in March
1901, Aitken would finish up on the losing side at that venue in both 1905 and
1906 as United were beaten in the FA Cup Final.
However he did collect a Championship medal in 1905, making what was to be his
final Magpies appearance in a 3-0 victory at Middlesbrough in October 1906.
Within a month Aitken had accepted the post of Boro player/coach, with United
banking a £500 transfer fee. He then took a similar role three years later at
Leicester Fosse, making his fourteenth and final Scotland appearance in April
1911.
Returning to Scotland with Dundee a month later, Andy moved on to Kilmarnock
in the summer of 1912, before a groin problem forced him into retirement early
in 1913.
Within a few months he was back on Tyneside when appointed manager of
Gateshead Town, subsequently scouting for both Newcastle United and Arsenal.
Later entering the licensed trade, Aitken was living in Ponteland at the time
of his death, in February 1955.
1933 Liam Tuohy born, East Wall, Dublin, Ireland (1960-63)
Playing at outside left for
his local football side, St. Mary's and in goal for his school hurling team,
Liam (nickamed Rasher) opted to pursue a career in the former sport with
hometown club Shamrock Rovers.
Appearing in the European Cup against Manchester United and representing his
country, Liam signed for Newcastle in May 1960 after the Magpies had faced
Rovers in a friendly match at Dalymount Park - a move which meant giving up
his full time job at Guinness.
Netting twice on his home debut (a 7-2 victory over Fulham), he scored four
goals in twelve games during that season but missed most of what became a
relegation season for the club through injury.
Two seasons of Second Division football followed, with Tuohy appearing just
three times in 1962/63 - his 42nd and final game for United coming against
Bury.
A return move to Shamrock was arranged and after initially being installed as
player-coach at Milltown, he took over as manager and enjoyed a run of success
through to 1969, when he moved on to Dundalk.
Combining that with working as a sales manager for an ice cream firm, Tuohy
also began coaching the Ireland national side in 1971. Swapping Dundalk for a
further spell at Shamrock a year later he kept his three jobs, before
sacrificing the national team role.
Later taking charge of Trinity College's side (playing as Dublin University),
Liam managed Shelbourne during the 1981/82 season and coached Ireland' U19s
for five years, until a dispute with senior team coach Jack Charlton saw him
relinquish that position in 1986.
Thereafter he became Director of Football at Dublin -based club Home Farm and
was often to be found coaching youngsters there until retiring in 2002.
Reflecting on his move to Tyneside many years later, Liam commented:
"It was difficult for her (his wife Sheila) at first with the
kids but I found the Newcastle people to be more like the Irish than any other
part of England and we have friends there to this day."
Liam passed away in August 2016 aged 83.
1988 Kris Thackray born, Newcastle.
(2003-04)
Midfielder/defender who joined United's Academy aged nine and
appeared for the U17s before being released in 2004.
Trials at Scunthorpe United, Darlington, Scarborough, Derby County and
Rochdale followed before Kris enrolled at Gateshead College and played for
them and Chester le Street's youth side.
Gaining selection for the England College XI, Thackray caught the attention of
a scout from Serie A side Reggina at a tournament in Italy and signed for them
in 2008 - after compensation was paid to United.
Three years in Italy saw him fail to make a senior appearance for them as he
settled in defence but was loaned out to Monopoli, Ancona, Andria and Cosenza.
Playing on trial at Huddersfield Town, Wrexham and Gateshead in 2011, Kris
then resurfaced in Malta with Qormi.
Subsequently playing for German sides Alemannia Aachen and KFC Uerdingen, a
return to Malta followed at Gzira United.
July 2018 found Thackray back in his native North East, signing for National
North side Spennymoor Town and coaching Durham University Women's XI.
Later moving on to Morpeth Town, by early 2020 he'd been loaned out to Blyth
Spartans and was also working as a football coach at his former college in
Gateshead.
2021 then saw Kris announce his playing retirement.
2005 Cathal Heffernan born, Cork, Ireland.
(2023-present)
Defender Cathal joined Newcastle from AC Milan during August
2023, having featured as a trialist in pre-season reserve friendlies against
both Carlisle United and Barrow.
Represented by ex-Magpie Stephen Ireland, Heffernan's
parents had both featured for Ireland at the 2012 London Olympics.
Cathal's playing career began with youth side Ringmahon Rangers before signing
for Cork City in 2019, debuting for their senior team two years later.
Amidst interest from several Italian clubs, a move to AC Milan was finalised
in January 2022, although Cathal's appearances for them were confined to
junior games.
Debuting competitively for United in a 0-1 PL2 loss at Reading days after
signing, Heffernan combined reserve games with appearances in the UEFA Youth
League - scoring against both Borussia Dortmund and former club AC Milan in
that competition.
A first U21 strike then gave his side a 3-2 derby away victory in March 2024.
Internationally, Heffernan has represented Ireland up to U19 level.

of promotion were ended by the Millers.
With Ron McGarry joining fellow striker Barrie Thomas on

Two years before his transfer to Newcastle, Albert Bennett
featured for the Millers while Rotherham's third goal was
a shot by Jimmy Blain that deflected in off Jim Iley.
The low attendance was due in part to the inclement
weather and also the staging of an FA Cup Semi-Final
between Liverpool and Leicester City at nearby
Hillsborough that attracted a crowd of 65,000.

With time running out and only a slender lead, Peter

After the final whistle though, an irate Jack Charlton

not hoofing the ball out of play when they had the chance.
The episode was later
blamed as a factor in the subsequent departure of both
players in search of pastures new - and trophies.

finding a breakthrough in this pivotal midweek game.
It could have been a different story had a front trio of

chances.
Owen in particular missed our best opportunity when he
only had the 'keeper to beat. David James blocked easily
and Alan Shearer's side inched closer to oblivion.

the least interesting aspect of this memorable mauling was
the first return of Anthony Gordon to Goodison - although
most of his former fans had left by the time he came off

Rather more memorable was an incredible dribble by
Alexander Isak to set up the fourth goal for Jacob Murphy
- a slight deflection off a defender meaning that the
Swede tragically didn't even register an
