Champions League:
He might score one,
he might score two...

The Champions League final will take place at Wembley between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, after the Spaniards wiped out a 0-1 deficit to Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Former Magpie Joselu appeared as an 82nd minute replacement in the Bernabeu and after levelling in the 88th minute, saw his 91st minute shot survive a VAR check to win it.

Now 34, the SJP old boy joined Real Madrid last July from Espanyol on a season-long loan. He's scored 17 times so far this season. Yes, that Joselu. Really.

PS: Unbelievable as this may sound, Joselu isn't the first ex-Newcastle player to come off the bench to score a  brace in the semi-final of the Champions League.

The first was Georginio Wijnaldum, introduced at half time for Liverpool against Barcelona at Anfield in May 2019 and netting in the 54th and 56th minutes.

Update:
Eddie on the Overlap

Following on from Anthony Gordon, the next Magpie to meet Gary Neville is the manager online here

Update:
Viv Busby RIP

The death of former Magpie Viv Busby has been announced, at the age of 74.

The striker spent three months at Gallowgate on loan from Luton Town during the 1971/72 season, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion - one of two goals  during his five game run.

His final appearance was our infamous FA Cup defeat at Hereford, a £60,000 switch then cancelled due to a lack of funds, wrecking Viv's hopes of a permanent reunion with former Hatters colleague, Malcolm Macdonald.

Instead Viv moved on to Fulham in 1973 and a three year stint at Craven Cottage included an appearance in the 1975 FA Cup Final defeat to West Ham.

Later moves took him to Norwich City, Stoke City, Sheffield United, Tulsa Roughnecks, Blackburn Rovers and York City.

A series of coaching and scouting roles then saw Busby serve a host of clubs including the mackems, Hartlepool United and Everton.

Diagnosed with leukaemia in 2000, he underwent a successful course of chemotherapy and returned to coaching before announcing his retirement in 2011.

Viv was living in Spain at the time of his death.

Non-League:
Star fall short

Wednesday saw Newcastle Blue Star beaten 1-2 at home by Easington Colliery in the Northern League Division two playoff final, with 1,771 fans present.

PS: Monday saw fellow Tynesiders Heaton Stannington successfully realise their own promotion ambitions.

A 3-0 victory over West Auckland Town in front of an incredible 2,107 crowd means that Grounsell Park will host Northern Premier League East games next season.

2023/24:
Glad all over...

Crystal Palace's recent upturn in results continued on Monday night, walloping a depleted Manchester United side 4-0 at a buoyant Selhurst Park.

Newcastle remain sixth in the Premier League as a consequence; the Red Devils now with just one win in seven PL outings and Eddie Howe's side with renewed optimism of snagging a European qualification spot.

Seven sides enter the three UEFA competitions, with the top four PL finishers going into the Champions League and the fifth place side entering the Europa League.

That leaves one further Europa League and one UEFA Conference League spot available, with the former allocated to the FA Cup winner and the latter going to the Carabao Cup winner - assuming neither side qualifies via a different method.

Carabao Cup winners Liverpool take a Champions League place as they are guaranteed a top four finish, freeing up the UEFA Conference place to the sixth place finisher.

However, if Manchester City win the FA Cup they enter the Champions League by virtue of their PL position, with the sixth place finishers taking the Europa League spot and the UEFA Conference League spot to seventh.

Were Manchester United win the FA Cup and finish seventh or eighth, they would take the second Europa League place, with the sixth place finisher entering the UEFA Conference League.

Current PL table:

The Magpies round off their PL home programme with a visit from The Seagulls on Saturday.

It's an old-fashioned, non-televised 3pm kick-off.

Team:
Joe Willock, Lewis Miley, Matt Targett, Sandro Tonali, Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles won't play again this season and Fabian Schar probably won't.

That leaves Kieran Trippier, who is still anticipated to return to action during our remaining three games.

Both Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak are one game away from reaching 50 PL appearances for the Magpies.

Coral rate this match as follows:

Ahead of their trip to Tyneside, Albion ended a six game winless streak in the Premier League with a 1-0 home victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Away from home this season, Roberto De Zerbi's side have won at Wolves, Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United - the most recent being at Bramall Lane back in February.

Since then they've lost three times and drawn twice, scoring just twice in those five games.

U18s:
Comeback kids
at it again!

Boro U18s  3  Newcastle U18s  4

Following a dramatic added time victory against Leeds United on Saturday, Newcastle U18s repeated the feat on Tuesday, recovering from a two goal deficit to post an unlikely victory over Boro at the Riverside Stadium.

Fresh from a 4-2 success against the mackems at the weekend, the hosts quickly took control of this game - Charlie Lennon firing off a post after just 90 seconds.

Their opener came on three minutes, Hakeem Bakara heading Prince Acheampong's cross at the near post.

Leo Shahar's timely block prevented Judah Tawiah from doubling that lead in the 13th minute, but within two minutes Lennon had made it 2-0, neatly tucking away the rebound after Adam Harrison blocked Bakara's shot.

Newcastle's first sight of goal came in the 27th minute when Jake Durrant's cross from the left reached Joe Brayson but he was unable to get his shot on target.

They gained what proved to be a vital foothold in the game deep into first half added time when Sean Neave clashed with home goalkeeper Shea Connor and referee Thomas Maher gave a penalty Alfie Harrison netted.

Just two minutes after the break United were level when Brayson fired in from point blank range at the second attempt following Harrison's pull back from the left.

United's revival was stifled though when the smoggies regained the lead on 57 minutes, Eric Hamelberg cutting in from the right and teeing up Bakara for his second.

At that point Boro seemed to have reassumed control, winger Hamelberg showing some excellent skills. Some over-ambitious finishing from his colleagues though meant that their lead remained just one goal.

The young Magpies weren't finished and drew level again the 81st minute, Matty Taylor curling in an excellent right-footer from the edge of the box.

And in the first minute of added time United went ahead for the first time in the game, pressing down the right before Palmer's cross was headed in by Neave to complete the comeback and leave Boro bereft.

The visiting striker by then was clad in a replacement number nine shirt, having had his first one ripped by an over-enthusiastic opponent.

There was also the unusual sight of two players sharing boots; Brayson damaging his mid-game and hastily donning substitute Darren Palmer's pair. When Palmer then replaced Brayson, the departing player discarded the boots at pitchside for the incoming one to wear.

Team: Ad.Harrison, Shahar, Durrant, Watts, H.Powell, Taylor (Wooster 85), Brayson (Palmer 76), O'Donovan, Neave, Al.Harrison, Bloomer.
Subs n/u: Jones, Johnson, Alabi.

Manchester United (a)

Wednesday week sees the Magpies make their second visit of the season to Old Trafford, having already won 3-0 there in the Carabao Cup.

It's an 8pm kick-off, live on Sky Sports.

Following a 1-0 victory at SJP in the first Premier League meeting, Eddie Howe's side have the chance to wrap up their first PL double against the Red Devils.

Since Edison Cavani's 71st minute leveller at SJP back in December 2021, Manchester United have failed to net in the PL against us in 289 minutes of play.

This will be the tenth time that these two clubs have met three times in the same season; Newcastle have never kept a 100% record intact in the previous nine.

Japan tour claim

The Chronicle report that Newcastle have been given the opportunity to play two pre-season games in Japan against J-League sides in July.

They name the possible opponents as Yokohama F Marinos and Urawa Red Diamonds, with a date for the latter opponent listed as July 31st.

No official confirmation of either game has appeared, Urawa fan sites also mentioning a possible Magpies meeting.

Meanwhile, United's post-season opponents Spurs have announced a kickabout against J-League side Vissel Kobe in Tokyo on July 27th. Kobe's current squad includes former Magpie Yoshinori Muto.

Our first visit to Japan followed the 1982/83 season, playing four games in three cities - Toyko, Okayama and Nagoya - en route to lifting the Japan Cup. We then returned in August 1996, losing 1-3 to Gamba Osaka.

On This Day in History
8th May

Born Or Died:

1935 Jackie Charlton born, Ashington.
(Mgr 1984-85)

Promoted back to the top flight but lacking a manager after Arthur Cox walked out in a wrangle over budgets and contracts, United were looking for a new boss in June 1984.

Without a club following a brief caretaker spell at Boro, Newcastle fan Jack Charlton allowed himself to be talked into taking the job by his uncle, one Jackie Milburn.

Refusing a contract and imposed an initial 12 month limit in the post, Jack was to survive slightly longer than that - but not much – quitting after being barracked in a pre-season game against Sheffield United although barely 5,000 fans were at SJP.

In retrospect he should have followed his instincts and turned down the job, as his attempts to reshape the side into a more solid, less entertaining outfit didn't find favour in the dressing room or the stands.

In despair after his side turned a 4-0 lead into a 5-5 draw at QPR, the likes of Pat Heard and Gary Megson arrived and a new twin strike force of Tony Cunningham and George Reilly saw Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley forced to play in new roles.

As a player Jack had famously served Leeds United and England, picking up a World Cup Winners medal in 1966 alongside his brother, Bobby (of whom we shall not speak again).

And a managerial career that had seen him taste success at both Boro and Sheffield Wednesday resumed its upward progress following his departure from Gallowgate.

Appointed Republic of Ireland boss in 1986, Charlton earned himself hero status in the Emerald Isle for his side's exploits in both World Cup & European Championship finals.

But it was a future Magpie who put an end to what was almost a glorious decade, Jack standing down soon after Patrick Kluivert's brace saw Holland beat Ireland in a European Championship playoff 2-0 at Anfield.

After that Charlton lived in semi-retirement, appearing from time to time in promotional events with the boys of '66 and continuing his lifelong hobby of fishing.

Awarded an OBE in 1974, his work with Ireland saw him honoured with a statue at Cork Airport in 1994 and he was granted honorary Irish citizenship in 1996.

Jack made the news in August 2009 when he collapsed while on holiday in Spain and was briefly hospitalised. Following a fall in March 2012 meanwhile, he underwent a hip replacement operation at the RVI.

Charlton died in July 2020 from lymphoma after a long battle with dementia that was chronicled in an acclaimed documentary, "Finding Jack Charlton".

October 2022 then saw the unveiling of a Charlton statue in Ashington's Hirst Park - the venue where he was spotted playing by a Leeds United scout as a youngster.

Sculpted in bronze by Douglas Jennings, the life-size statue cost £40K: £10K from the local council and £30k in public donations.

1936 Malcolm Scott born, South Shields. (1955-61)

Defender recruited from Cleadon Juniors who signed for the Magpies in September 1955, combining his football with a job in the shipyards and playing cricket for Durham.

However Malcolm had to wait until January 1957 for his first team debut, deputising at short notice for the absent Bob Stokoe in a 1-6 reverse at Old Trafford.

After one outing the following season, he finally made an impact on the side under manager Charlie Mitten in 1958.

Scott's cricket career also took off, when he signed for Northamptonshire the following year, having appeared in the Minor Counties Select XI, RAF & Combined Services teams.

The following season saw him unable to force his way into the defensive lineup, but Scott did have some success as a stand-in striker, scoring twice in a 3-2 win at Leeds. He'd also played in goal for the reserves.

An Achilles injury sustained in a reserve game against Huddersfield Town in 1961 affected Malcolm's football career and after leaving SJP, he played for Darlington, York City and Rugby Town.

Malcolm later became a social worker and wrote his autobiography, entitled "A Geordie All Rounder", published in 2009.

His death was reported in September 2020.

1940 Carl Wilson born, Lanchester, Durham. (1958-59)

Striker Carl joined United as an apprentice in October 1955, following in the footsteps of his father Joe, who had played for United between the wars.

Turning professional during February 1958, his sole competitive appearance was in a 0-3 Division One loss at Blackpool the following August, deputising for Len White.

Injuries disrupted Wilson's progress at SJP and he was transferred to Gateshead at a cost of £410 in January 1960.

Later moves took him to Doncaster Rovers and Millwall, before a switch to Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam for the 1962/63 season.

That saw him feature in the UEFA Cup for Sparta, netting a 16 minute treble during a 4-2 success against Swiss side Lausanne Sports at Feyenoord's De Kuip Stadium.

Carl subsequently played for German outfit Schwarz-Weiss Essen before returning to his native County Durham, where he ran a haulage business.

Sadly, he fell victim to cancer and passed away during February 2019, aged 78.

1973 Laurent Charvet born, Beziers,
France (1998-2000)

Defender/midfielder signed from Cannes in summer 1998 for £520K by Kenny Dalglish, after a loan spell at Chelsea the previous season failed to see him win a deal there.

Charvet's competitive debut came in a 0-0 home draw with Charlton and what proved to be his sole goal came in a 2-2 draw at the smoggies that December.

By then Charvet had been reunited with ex-Chelsea boss Ruud Gullit at SJP, Gianluca Vialli having succeeded him at Stamford Bridge and allowed Charvet's loan to lapse.

After a first season that ended in an FA Cup Final appearance though, 1999/00 was a write off for Charvet who featured in only a handful of games once Bobby Robson was installed as Magpies boss.

However, he fought his way back into the first team in the following season ahead of Warren Barton in the right back berth.

United then chose to cash in on a player in the final year of his contract and Charvet
followed fellow defender Steve Howey to Manchester City for £1.5M in 2000.

An injury-hit spell at City saw him make just  24 appearances in over two years, although he passed a medical at Marseille in January 2002 - but was then unable to agree terms.

Late 2002 saw him released by Kevin Keegan and train with Monaco before turning up on trial at Ipswich Town - managed by his former Manchester City boss Joe Royle.

No contract offer was forthcoming though and after contact from both Auxerre and Sochaux in France, Charvet joined the latter in January 2003 and was reunited with his ex-Cannes coach Guy Lacombe.

Netting an own goal in a defeat by Lyon was about the most memorable thing he did in a short period at the Stade Auguste Bonal and Laurent departed in summer 2003.

He then worked as Marketing Director of Principality Sports Management in London.

2000 Alessandro Tonali born, Lodi, Italy (2023-present)

Following United's fourth place finish in the Premier League and entry to the Champions League, their incoming transfer business in summer 2023 was eagerly awaited.

The first arrival in July from AC Milan was a statement signing: £60m spent on an Italian international midfielder who signed a five year contract at Gallowgate.

Previously with Brescia, Tonali was a regular in the AC Milan side that won the Serie A title in 2022 and had appeared in the Champions League for the previous three seasons. A lifelong fan of the Rossoneri, he was under contract until 2027 at the San Siro.

Sandro's season had finally ended a week earlier at the Euro U21 tournament and he trained with his new colleagues on Tyneside before his first outing against Rangers in the Allan McGregor testimonial at Ibrox.

His competitive debut in England would be a memorable one; volleying his side ahead in only the sixth minute of what ended up a 5-1 rout of Aston Villa on Tyneside.

Returning to former club AC Milan in the Champions League he was well received during a 0-0 draw in the San Siro, but his season was cut short when banned for breaching Italian betting regulations.

That 10 month suspension from all football activities also meant that Sandro would miss out on the UEFA Euro 2024 finals.

Further charges were brought against Tonali in March 2024 by the English FA after it transpired that he'd placed bets on his own team after moving to Newcastle.

However a two month suspended ban was imposed for those offences, meaning he could resume playing in late August 2024.

24 hours after a 6-1 victory over the KB side in Copenhagen, the second game of Newcastle's first continental tour brought success against a City Select side.

No trace of the United scorers has been found, but the visitors went behind on the quarter hour before levelling from the penalty spot.

Going ahead before the break, Newcastle then scored a further four times before the hosts pulled another goal back late on.

Interested onlookers at the game which took place on a Sunday were Prince Waldemar, Prince Charles and Princess Maud of Denmark, plus various other local dignitaries.

This was a replayed game squeezed into the final week of the season when United played a trio of home fixtures.

The original game had been abandoned in March due to adverse weather and this restaging was played on an equally wet night at St. James' Park - another postponement was never going to happen.

It was the lowest attendance for a league game at Gallowgate for nearly 80 years. However, the average crowd for the season was 20,926 - not bad for a side who in March were as low as 16th in Division Two.

2006 United confirmed they had submitted a claim for wrongful dismissal in respect of Stephen Carr's red card against Chelsea.
