We Said

Eddie Howe said:

"It was a good exercise fitness wise. It was a good night. Always good to win. In pre-season it's not imperative but it improves the mood.

"The camp has been really good for us -  the facilities and support were high class. We go back united and fitter, and now we've got a key two week period to improve on all areas.

"It's been really hard work for the players, I've got to say. We've worked them every day. There's been a couple of team-building activities that will really help our spirit. I do think we go back a more united group. The new players will feel a lot more acclimatised to the group.

"There will be a lot of training now. We haven’t done much training for the last four or five days so it will be good to get back on the training pitch and iron out a few things.

On two-goal Elliot Anderson:

"He came back for our fitness testing as the fittest player - and by some distance. He looks stronger, leaner and fitter. You don't have the strength to score goals like that in the last minute if you're not super
fit. The goals are no accident.

"Have I picked my team for Villa on the first game of the season? No way. You want players to force their way into your eyesight and Elliot has certainly done that."

On Anderson and fellow Academy graduate Lewis Miley:

"They’ve both done really well, and tribute to Lewis coming on for the last half an hour. We felt we needed to change things in midfield. He came on and added composure to our midfield. He showed real maturity to come into a difficult situation.

"All the lads did well.”

They Said

Roberto De Zerbi:

"I’m really happy, we played a great game. We played 60 minutes in an amazing way then the last part of the game we closed with our U21s.

"We have a lot of young players and we have to give them the possibility to make mistakes, but it’s not a problem. They will become great players too.

"It was a great experience to play in the USA, it has been a fantastic 12 days. We worked very well to improve our knowledge and idea of football, especially with the new players, and we have not had an injury, so I am very happy.

“In Europe we want to fight, to show our quality, to play with courage and make our fans happy so this experience will help us too."

Jersey Geordie Shore - Wey Aye!

Two late goals from Elliot Anderson saw Newcastle conclude their Summer Series participation with victory over Brighton in Harrison, New Jersey on Friday night.

A full house at the Red Bull Arena saw a completely different line-up to the one named 48 hours before in Atlanta go behind to Danny Welbeck's tap-in four minutes into the second half, having struggled to make headway themselves in 32 degree temperatures.

With only an inexperienced bench to call upon, the chances of Eddie Howe's side coming from behind for the third time in six days seemed remote, but Callum Wilson grazed the crossbar soon after before setting up Anderson to be denied by Bart Verbruggen.

At the other end Nick Pope made a couple of timely blocks to prevent Brighton adding to their lead and collected a booking after dashing off his line to head clear and then delaying attempts at restarting with a quick throw-in by knocking a spare ball on the field.

A clutch of replacements for Newcastle included 18 year-old striker Ben Parkinson and he had a chance to level six minutes from time after Anderson regained possession. However his effort lacked power and was gathered by the grateful goalkeeper.

Within two minutes though the green-clad Magpies had made it 1-1; Anderson getting between two defenders to reach Jacob Murphy's right wing cross and burying the loose ball from six yards out.

Parkinson then headed over after another dangerous counter attack saw Lewis Miley and Murphy combine before two minutes added time was indicated - and had almost ended when Murphy placed an inch perfect pass forward that Anderson ran onto.

Holding off the challenge of Ed Turns, Elliot burst into the area and rammed home a low shot for his fourth goal of pre-season before celebrating in front of the gleeful Toon followers behind that goal.

Three points left Newcastle top of the table and with the chance of winning
the cup, depending on results in the final two games on Sunday. That's of no consequence, but the victory rounded off a successful tour on and off the field nicely, fans and players saluting each other at full time.
