McClen found Acuña on the edge of the area who played in the overlapping Bassedas, and the Argentinean stabbed the ball past the keeper as defenders converged on him 1-1

We Said

Reds reserve coach Hugh McAuley commented:

"We're very disappointed to have lost the game and I don't think we deserved to come away with nothing.

"We started the game well and created some good chances. At half time we could have been two or three goals up because I thought we were the better side.

"Newcastle, to their credit, came back at us after the break and it was frustrating from our point of view that we couldn't keep them out.

"They scored a couple of good goals but we think we could have dealt with them better from a defensive point of view."

We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"I thought we played well. We battled hard and scored two good goals through Christian and Lewis. We've been playing well these last few games and not winning games and I felt we deserved that last night.

"It was another good mix of youth and experience and beating Liverpool away will have done the lads the world of good."

Waffle

United's England youth international striker Lewis Guy came off the bench to score a late winner down at the Deva Stadium as we gained a deserved three points on Thursday night.

Liverpool, included first-teamers Biscan, Babbel and Smicer in their line-up and looked dangerous early in the game, taking the lead just after the quarter hour mark.

Newcastle came back into it in the latter stages of the first half, Guy Bates putting a shot just over after 31 minutes and then having a diving header saved three minutes later.

However the home side continued to look dangerous on the break and led 1-0 at the interval.

Tommy Craig obviously had a few inspirational words at half time (in a variety of languages) as United dominated the second half, with both McClen and Acuna noticeably getting forward to link up with the attack more frequently.

We failed to create any real goalscoring chances to reflect our improvement, only  having Bates shot on 62 minutes to show for our pressure.

Then the introduction of Guy sparked the toon into life and a four minute spell saw a leveller followed by a winner, partly due to the reds holding off from tackling and allowing our lads some room to work in which hadn't been available earlier in the game.

It also has to be recorded that as the competitive spirit of the game rose, the side as a whole showed admirable appetite for the cause - Marcelino especially putting in a good shift at the back and McClen having to receive treatment for a head injury when trying to get a goalbound header in.

Up front Cort did manage a shot on target as he lobbed the ball home, having been caught offside a split second before - he looked a little more mobile and confident than of late, and managed to prove his increased nuisance value by being booked.

A mention also for Academy striker Guy Bates, who showed some good touches in his first reserve start and was unlucky not to mark the occasion with a goal.
