We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"It was a fantastic performance and it's great to win at Old Trafford at any level. We were delighted that the game was played at Old Trafford, and that's no disrespect to Altrincham where the game was initially due to be played, and I think it raised the game of some of our players - especially the younger lads.

"It's a superb venue and a good pitch and the players enjoyed it. We started well in the first half hour, but we let them back into it in the last 15 minutes of the half and I told the boys at the break that we had to start the second period in the way we had the first. We did that, and once we got the third goal we defended very well to keep them out. We stuck to our task and got our rewards."

Carl Cort may have dressed as Batman for the player's Christmas do earlier in the week, but by Thursday night he'd become Superman - thanks to a brace and an accomplished display for Newcastle's second string.

Pre-match attention was firmly with the home side, with Roy Keane selected to sharpen his fitness after a hip operation before a first team comeback.

The threat of frost affecting the pitch at the game's original Altrincham venue
influenced the decision to relocate to Old Trafford, but he was overshadowed by Tommy Craig's side unbeaten in their last seven league and cup outings.

Cort's goals stole the headlines, but also putting in noteworthy performances were Robbie Elliott in central defence and Christian Bassedas in central midfield.

The Magpies forward opened the scoring after 25 minutes shooting past the keeper at the Stretford End after a long ball from Robbie Elliott.

Daniel Nardiello then equalised after a 30 yarder from Keane almost knocked Adam Collin off his feet, the home striker slotting in the rebound from eight yards.

The home side went ahead five minutes after the break when Taylor and Brennan messed about at the back, Brennan running into trouble trying to dribble across our 'D', leaving Nardiello a simple chance to grab his second.

Bradley Orr drove us back on terms after 63 minutes after Brennan won a corner. Kendrick took the kick long for Cort to head down and Orr whacked it home.

And three minutes later Cort got his second when Chopra foraged for a loose ball down the left. Chops won it and turned the ball infield to Cort in space who fired a confident low right-footer from 15 yards.

Newcastle held on to claim all three points with this victory being our third consecutive three-goal haul at Old Trafford: U17s, Seniors and Reserves.
