Goals

9 mins A disputed free-kick down the right was awarded and quickly taken, reaching Christophe Grondin who centred for local lad Craig Fagan to side-foot home from eight yards. The expression caught napping comes to mind when thinking of our defence at this point....0-1

Half time: Birmingham 1 Newcastle Reserves 0

We Said

Tommy Craig said:

"Considering the young side we had out we did very well although I was a bit unhappy that we conceded another goal from a set piece.

"This apart I thought our young back three of Chris Carr, Steven Taylor and Peter Ramage did very well for us and I cannot fault them.

"But we were a bit lightweight up front and it was not surprising that we could not find the finishing touch although Lewis Guy was not too far away not long after they scored.

"Birmingham had three or four players with first team experience in their side and to tell the truth they were always more likely to score, but we could have sneaked a point."

"If I doubted their attitude at the Riverside Stadium there was nothing wrong with it last night.

"In fact I have got to say that the players attitude was first class - just like it has been for most of the season."

They Said

Keith Bertschin said:

"
It’s been a good run of results for us. We had the added incentive of playing at St Andrew’s which is always a bonus.

“We came up against a Newcastle side which was young and very competitive and we gave a really good account of ourselves.

“The goal came about through a piece of opportunism when we were awarded a free kick on the right hand side of the penalty area.

“If I had to be critical of us at all, it was that we got into some good areas, but our final ball was a little bit off the mark.

“Overall there were a lot of positives to come out of the game

“A lot of my team had played just 48 hours before this game but they still showed great determination and desire to get around the park as well as great fitness.

“They also passed the ball well we passed the ball and always wanted to get the ball down and play.”

Waffle

After a fogbound 0-0 at Kingston Park in the corresponding game, heavy rain showers greeting a young reserve side at St.Andrews on Wednesday evening, as we concluded our away league programme.

Watched by Steve Bruce and a sparse crowd, the home side began the stronger and after nine minutes were ahead.

City threatened to add further goals to their tally and Adam Collin was called upon to make a good stop to turn away a Jovan Kirovski header.

At the other end our raids were few and far between, but striker Lewis Guy skied a half-chance from inside the box, and midfielder Ross Gardner miscued with a first time effort as he tried to notch his second strike in as many games.

The second half saw a more solid Newcastle display as they coped with the home side's probing better, but still relied on keeper Collin more than once to keep the score at 1-0.

After a poor display out wide on Monday, Jamie McClen looked happier in a central midfield role, but as an attacking force we were seldom seen, failing to register a shot on target in the whole game.

Some late pressure hinted that we might just snatch an equaliser, but the nearest we came was an Orr pile-driver that whistled past Marriott's right post.

A slightly more palatable performance than the slipshod display at the Boro, especially given the thinness of the squad utilised, but still a long way from being satisfactory.
