A young Newcastle reserve side were beaten by their Leeds counterparts at
the re-branded Atlantic Solutions Stadium in Wakefield on Wednesday evening.

And despite taking the lead for the fourth time in as many away games, The
Magpies were unable to register their first win of 2005.

Academy coaches Kenny Wharton and Peter Beardsley were in charge of team
affairs and sprang a surprise by utilising defender Liam Atkin as a makeshift striker.

However that move paid dividends within seven minutes, when Atkin opened the
scoring with his first goal at this level.

David Edgar and Kris Gate combined down the Newcastle right for the latter
to centre and Atkin took a touch, before shooting under veteran 'keeper
Kevin Pressman from close range.

That lead lasted until 24 minutes when a defensive error on the edge of our
own box allowed much-travelled striker Julian Joachim sight of goal and his
shot beat toon 'keeper Ben Smith to level the match.

Things went from bad to worse though for Newcastle when straight from the
restart, Leeds took the lead through Seth Johnson.

The £7m midfielder continued his latest comeback from injury with a low
right-footed effort across a partially unsighted Smith from the edge of the
area, Joachim involved again in holding the ball up until Johnson arrived in
support.

And it was Joachim again causing problems for our defence in the final
minute of the first half, seeing his effort clip Smith's post and bounce
away to safety.

Newcastle almost got back on level terms six minutes after the restart, only
for Atkin to put his header wide of the target when well placed.

Second half replacements saw striker Marc Walton appear of the bench and he
almost salvaged a point in the 89th minute when he ghosted in at the far
post but found Pressman equal to his firm header.

Meanwhile at the other end Leeds were unable to seal the victory with a
third goal, thanks partly to a couple of decent saves from Ben Smith.

No lack of effort from the Magpies again, but the defence endured an
uncomfortable night against the lively Joachim, while we were second-best in
the midfield.

PS: One of tonight's unused Toon subs was highly-rated midfielder Matty
Pattison, making his return from injury having missed the whole season with
a cruciate problem.

18 year-old Patter had been involved in pre-season with the first team under
Bobby Robson and appeared in the friendly match at Celtic back in August
before being sidelined.

PPS - goalscorer Julian Joachim for Leeds (who in the colours of Leicester scored against us more than a decade ago) was on the move again within hours of this match, signing for Walsall.
