Lee Clark commented:

I'm not pleased with any of the goals we conceded, but we've got young players here learning their trade.

"Some of them are playing in their first year here and getting used to the place.

"Yet as long as I see an improvement every week, I am more than happy.

"We have got young players who are prone to make errors from time to time, but I saw an improvement and a lot of good things. I am still pleased and I won't be too harsh on the lads.

"In the second half we gave away two poor goals, but generally the performance was of a good standard.

"Our goal was deserved because of the way we started the game, and we were very bright.

"We played some good football on a surface that's not suited to that style.

"Kazenga was one of players who put in a great individual performance and lifted the group.

"Matty Pattison also had one of his best games for a long time. Andy Carroll did all right too, but I am greedy and I still expect more from him."

Newcastle's second string have now failed to register a win in their last eight outings and were deservedly beaten at Kingston Park on Wednesday evening.

United started well, Matty Pattison opening the scoring in the seventh minute when he connected with Kazenga LuaLua's though ball and beat the Blades 'keeper from close in.

However we failed to build on that advantage and were punished
eight minutes before the break, Jacob Mellis taking advantage of Paul Huntington's error to drive the ball home.

There was almost an instant reply at the other end, but Alex Francis was denied a first goal at this level when his header was blocked.

After a bright start to the second period with Ryan Donaldson unleashing an effort from distance that went narrowly wide, we again fell back though and surrendered the initiative.

A handball offence in his own box by Alex Francis following a right wing cross was spotted by referee Quinn.

And although Ayman Tahar's spot-kick was saved by Fraser Forster, the Algerian
-born midfielder blasted home the rebound.

The Blades then had two efforts rightly disallowed for offside but four minutes into injury time substitute Nicky Travis made no mistake from eight yards - having netted with an identical effort moments before that was chalked off.
