We Said

Lee Clark commented:

"I'm gutted for the players.

"We should have picked up a draw at least and it was a good performance from us. Individual errors have cost us the points and if we'd have won by four goals that what have been a fair reflection on the game.

Looking at the positive side, Peter Ramage had a good performance but unfortunately one of the errors came from him. Overall, he did well, though.

"I think he is a great example out there to the younger players."

"As I've said before, performances are more important than results and that was there last night, apart from the two errors we would have been clear winners.

"I can accept that young players will make errors and overall the standard I've seen in the last two games has been acceptable. I am pleased with it."

"Our lads handled it (the Rugby League pitch) well and actually played some good football on it."

Waffle

Lee Clark's reserve side were unable to build on their 3-0 win away to Sheffield United last week, slipping to yet another defeat in the North West - this time at the Halton Stadium in Widnes against the Toffees.

Having seen Everton strike the woodwork twice in the opening ten minutes through McFadden & Morrison, United went ahead on 14 minutes.

Andy Carroll had found the side netting with his first real opportunity of the night moments before, but he converted his second chance to notch his 16th goal of the season at all levels, heading Edgar's centre into an empty net.

The Toffees had a number of half-chances but Newcastle made it through to the break with that one-goal advantage.

However it was 1-1 just eight minutes after the restart with Scotland forward James McFadden marking his return from a broken foot by steering a loose ball past Fraser Forster after Ramage's backpass.

And McFadden grabbed his and Everton's second with nine minutes remaining, following up after Forster had parried a fierce shot from Brazilian midfielder Anderson de Silva.
