Coppa Carnivale 2011
Viareggio Tournament

Six seasons after their last participation, Newcastle returned to compete in the annual Coppa Carnevale U21 11-a-side tournament staged in Italy. More formally known as the Torneo da Viareggio, the Magpies were among 17 visiting overseas clubs in the 48 team event that is staged for the 63rd time.

United travelled with a 19 man squad has travelled (although Fabio Zamblera and Haris Vuckic weren't 100% fit):

Ole Soderberg, Jonathan Mitchell, Dan Leadbitter, Conor Newton, Alex Nicholson, Louis Storey, Jeff Henderson, Michael Riley, Paul Dummett, Patrick McLaughlin, Greg McDermott, Michael Richardson, Brad Inman, Michael Hoganson, Phil Airey, Joan Edmundsson, Dan Taylor, Haris Vuckic, Fabio Zamblera. (Sammy Ameobi withdrew with a knee injury).

Tue 22.02.2011 NUFC 1-3 Fiorentina (Pistoia)

Our participation in the annual Torneo da Viareggio got off to a poor start on Tuesday, when they were beaten in Pistoia by the Italians of Fiorentina.

0-2 behind at the break, The Viola made it 0-3 before Newcastle pulled one back on 81 minutes after a routine finish from Joan
Edmundsson.

NUFC:
Soderberg, Leadbitter, Dummett, Henderson, McLaughlin, McDermott, Richardson, Newton, Inman, Airey (D.Taylor), Edmundsson. Subs n/u: Nicholson, Mitchell, Riley, Storey, Hoganson. Booked: Henderson

Thu 24.02.2011 NUFC 2-2 Club Nacional (Santa Maria a Monte):

On a pitch more suitable for grazing donkeys on that football, Peter Beardsley's side were held by their Paraguayan opponents on Thursday. Falling behind after 15 minutes, Michael Richardson's effort and an own goal but them ahead before the half hour mark, but Nacional netted again midway through the second half.

That scoreline means Newcastle now need a convincing victory in their closing group game and some favourable results elsewhere if they are to make it through to the second stage of the competition.

NUFC: Soderberg, Leadbitter, Dummett, Henderson, McLaughlin, McDermott, Richardson, Newton, Inman, Airey, Edmundsson (D.Taylor). Subs n/u: Nicholson, Mitchell, Riley, Storey, Hoganson.

Sat 26.02.2011 NUFC 1-1 Lecce (Viareggio)

Newcastle's final group game ended in stalemate against homegrown opposition on Saturday - with Phil Airey netting from a well-struck free-kick on 16 minutes, after Lecce had earlier taken the lead.

NUFC: Soderberg, Nicholson (Hoganson), Storey, Henderson, Riley, McLaughlin (Leadbitter), McDermott, Newton, Richardson, Inman (Edmundsson) Airey.
Subs n/u: Taylor, Mitchell. Booked: McDermott, Riley.

Other Group 8 results:

Tue: Club Nacional 2 Lecce 2
Thu: Fiorentina 2 Lecce 1
Sat: Fiorentina 2 Nacional 2
