We kick off with a trio of photos from Bob Lilliman, who set the scene and
captured some of the action from Newcastle's Division One home game against
Wimbledon during September 1987.
Bob's pictures capture SJP when the old West Stand had been demolished; season
ticket holders relocated to temporary seating on the Leazes End, flanked by
dressing rooms and directors facilities located in Portakabins.
That left the East Stand as the only area with any shelter, the former paddocks
filled with "the benches" including an unsegregated row for the press in front
of the first executive boxes to be constructed in the ground.
The hated perimeter fencing remained behind both goals, with the away fans in
the West End of the Leazes under the watchful eye of another Portakabin housing
the police control room.
On the field United lost 1-2 to The Wombles, on the day that Mirandinha made his
home debut for the Magpies in front of just 22,734 fans.
There's some priceless stuff on a YouTube clip of the game - Wor Jackie, tat
sellers, half in half hats and a slightly bemused Mira all
