Changing tack slightly, we turn our gaze on an
unremarkable Premiership visit by Newcastle to Goodison Park in February 1998
- the second time in as many months that the Magpies had been to the blue
side of Stanley Park, following their 1-0 FA Cup Third Round victory there.
A 0-0 draw that we described as
"uniformly miserable" was notable for the sustained abuse from Toffees fans
directed at Newcastle's Gary Speed, who had switched clubs barely three weeks
before.
Speed's addition to the side though saw Kenny Dalglish name a starting line-up
composed entirely of senior internationals for the first time
in the club's history. He then made that 12 with a 64th minute substitution,
replacing one international with another:
Shay Given (Ireland)
Warren Barton (England)
Stephen Howey (England)
Stuart Pearce (England)
Philippe Albert (Belgium)
David Batty (England)
Rob Lee (England)
Gary Speed (Wales)
Andreas Andersson (Sweden)
Alan Shearer (England)
Keith Gillespie (Northern Ireland)
Substitute:
Temuri Ketsbaia (Georgia)
(replaced Gillespie)
Unused subs:
Shaka Hislop (future Trinidad & Tobago)
John Barnes (England)
Jon Dahl Tomasson (Denmark)
Darren Peacock (none)
