Champions League
draw
staged tonight

From UEFA:

The league phase draw for the Champions League takes place on Thursday August 28th at 6pm CET (5pm BST).

36 participating teams will be split into four pots based on their individual coefficient ranking with the UEFA Champions League titleholder the top seed in Pot 1.

Starting with Pot 1, one physical ball will be drawn before the automated software draws eight opponents for them, taking into account the following principles:

Two teams from each of the four pots, with one home and one away match against teams from each pot drawn by the software.

No teams from the same association can face each other and no more than two opponents from the same association can be drawn in the same group.

The same procedure will be repeated for all other teams until all pairings have been drawn.

The CL fixture list with match dates and kick-off times will be communicated no later than Saturday 30 August.

2025/26:
Bantams in Toon

Newcastle begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a Third Round home tie against League One Bradford City.

Third Round ties will be played across two consecutive midweeks (w/c September 15th and w/c September 22nd).

The Magpies are in Champions League action during the first of those weeks, meaning that their Carabao Cup tie will be played on or around September 23rd or 24th.

That falls between the Premier League visit to Bournemouth and home meeting against Arsenal.

Season ticket holders who signed up for the Carabao Cup home ticket scheme will be charged £20 and £25 depending on their seating area. Payment will be taken within seven days of the fixture date confirmation.

Graham Alexander's side reached the Third Round thanks to a 2-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers and a 3-0 success at fellow Championship side Stoke City.

The Bantams currently sit fourth in League One, with three wins and two draws from their opening five EFL fixtures.

This is the fourth time that the two sides have been paired in this competition, the most recent meeting a 4-3 Third Round victory at Gallowgate for Newcastle in 2000.

The Magpies lost a two-legged tie in the 1986/87 season - beaten 0-2 at Odsal and winning 1-0 at SJP but got the better of Bradford in 1984/85, following up a 3-1 victory on Tyneside with a 1-0 success at Valley Parade.

Latest:
JSL: deal now close

Latest: A further bid of £55m for Jorgen Strand Larsen was made by Newcastle and rejected late on Tuesday, but it now appears that agreement is set to be reached on a fee for the Wolves centre forward - more to follow....

Earlier: Following widespread reports of an unsuccessful bid in the region of £50m from Newcastle, Larsen came off the bench to net a quick-fire brace for his current club Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The 25 year-old Norwegian international scored twice in three minutes to turn a 1-2 deficit into a 3-2 advantage against West Ham at Molineux - his first goals since the season-long loan deal that brought him from Celta Vigo during July 2024 became permanent at a cost of £26m.

Asked about Larsen's future following the victory, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira simply said, "I don't know, I'm not the owner."

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, there was no sign of Yoane Wissa as Brentford made it to the Third Round of the Carabao Cup after winning 2-0 at Bournemouth.

The transfer window closes at 7pm on Monday.

Update:
Saturday: Star v Stan

For anyone not heading to Elland Road, there's a spicy-looking FA Cup clash on Tyneside between Newcastle Blue Star and Heaton Stannington this Saturday.

It's a 3pm kick-off at the KD Stadium and tickets can be bought here now or at the gate, subject to availability.

Stadium postcode is NE15 7BD - street parking nearby.

Missing from the Star line-up will be former Magpie striker Michael Ndiweni, who has landed a scholarship at Ohio State University in the USA.

Update:
Bournemouth (a) tickets

Tickets for those who successfully applied for United's Premier League visit to Bournemouth next month went on sale on Wednesday afternoon.

Sales were staggered once again; those with 167 points having two hours before those with 54 points or more and ballot winners got their go.

All sales must be completed by 2pm on Friday (29th).

Tickets are in paper form, posted to the lead booker.

NUFC away ticket process changes are detailed here

NB: this game could yet move depending on the Champions League calendar. On that basis, the club are obliged to offer refunds if the alternative date meant that supporters were then unable to attend.

Match report

U21s:
U21 game relocated

Beaten in their opening two PL2 games on home territory, Newcastle U21s will hope for a change of fortune on Friday, when they play their first away fixture in that competition.

Their opponents are Birmingham City, with the game now rescheduled and having a new venue and kick-off time.

Originally advertised as a 7pm kick-off at Stratford Town FC, the fixture now goes ahead at City's training ground in Kings Norton with a 2pm start time.

Formerly known as Wast Hills, that now rejoices in the title of the Knighthead Performance Centre.

With incoming coach Adam Lawrence not due to take up his position until next month, interim coach Robbie Stockdale will remain in charge. He'll then move to assisting Lawrence.

Update:
U21 Coach appointed

From NUFC, Wednesday:

Newcastle United will appoint Adam Lawrence as the club's new Under-21s Lead Coach on 1st September.

The 38-year-old will join the Magpies' Academy following his departure from Manchester United, where he was Lead Coach for the club's Under-18s side.

During his tenure, Lawrence led his Under-18s team to three pieces of silverware in the 2023/24 campaign, winning the Premier League regional and national titles as well as the Premier League Cup.

Last season, Lawrence guided his side to second in the Premier League North, while they narrowly missed out on reaching the FA Youth Cup final after losing to eventual winners Aston Villa in the semi-finals on penalties.

Alongside his role as Under-18s Lead Coach, Lawrence also held the role of Head of Player Development (U13-U16), where he was tasked with ensuring a smooth transition for players as they began their scholarships.

Prior to joining Manchester United, Lawrence spent eight years at Charlton Athletic's Academy, where he served as the club's Head of Coaching, as well as working within Millwall's youth system.

He will be assisted by Robbie Stockdale, who has been in interim charge of the Under-21s side since the departure of Diarmuid O'Carroll.

Compo winner

Restocked for the new season is the Shearer bucket hat from Football Bobbles, with the 1996/97 change kit colours on one side and black & white on the reverse.

These are available to purchase here in three sizes.

The Tyneside-based company also has a brand-new range of bespoke T-shirts depicting the life and times of Newcastle's 50s hero and FA Cup winner George Robledo.

These are available to purchase here in a bewildering variety of sizes and colours.

The prize in our latest competition was a Shearer bucket hat or a Robledo T-shirt and to stand a chance of winning we asked which former Magpie played for Liverpool the last time we won a PL game against them in 2015.

It was of course James Milner and the winning entry came from Peter Cowell.

Old boys:
Ritchie a Royal

Ex-Magpie Matt Ritchie is on the move again barely a year after leaving Tyneside, joing League One Reading on a two year deal following his release by Portsmouth.

Fellow former midfielder Isaac Hayden meanwhile has completed a permanent return to Championship side QPR after leaving Gallowgate.

Matt finish confirmed

Newcastle have now concluded a loan deal sending full back Matt Target to Boro for the remainder of the season.

The 29 year-old was in the last year of his contract at SJP and hadn't started a Premier League game for the Magpies since September 2023.

Targett made 47 senior competitive appearances since arriving on loan from Aston Villa during January 2022. That loan became a permanent switch ahead of the 2022/23 campaign at a claimed cost of £15m.

He's in line to make his Boro bow when they host Sheffield United in the Championship this coming Saturday.

U18s:
Foxes fettled

Newcastle U18s  3  Leicester City U18s  2

It's now three wins out of three for Newcastle U18s, who followed up back-to-back league victories with success in their opening Premier League Cup tie on Tuesday.

Coach Chris Moore gave a debut to Isaac Moran following his arrival from Liverpool and the black and whites led at half time thanks to
Sam Pinnington's 32nd minute shot.

City almost equalised straight after the break when Alpha Diallo headed against the post before an emphatic finish from Alex O'Donovan doubled the lead, hammering a shot home off the underside of the bar in the 57th minute.

That prompted the visitors into a double switch that quickly boosted their attacking threat and they reduced the arrears 10 minutes later - the referee's assistant confirming that Lorenz Hutchinson's header had crossed the line despite the claims of home 'keeper George Mair.

United's two goal lead was restored on 71 minutes when the ball was nodded down for Mohammed Waddani to hook in from close range for his second goal of the season.

Luqman Aideed's finish at the far post then made it 3-2 to United with five minutes of normal time left, heralding a frantic finale that was memorable for the wrong reasons.

A mass confrontation near to United corner flag following a foul ended with match officials and coaches from both sides intervening to separate warring players.

Referee Stephen Beresford red-carded Foxes pair Diallo and David Anugo, while two home players were cautioned.

United's Noel Morgan left on a stretcher with his left forearm strapped up before the game belatedly restarted and the final seconds were played before a second half that had been extended to 61 minutes was concluded.

Team: Mair, Patterson, Morgan, Johnson, Moran (Old 46), Alabi, Pinnington (E.Ndiweni 75), Lucas, Wooster (Goodbrand 71), O'Donovan (Hutchison 71), Waddani.
Sub n/u: Holland.

Booked: Wooster, Alabi, Goodbrand, (Holland).

PS: Newcastle's U18 league home game against Leeds United this Saturday (30th) has been switched and now takes place away at Thorp Arch. Kick-off remains Noon.

The other meeting of two sides will now be staged on Tyneside in January 2026.

Meltdown:
Isak timeline

Sun 04.05
Isak scored his 54th Premier League goal (62nd in all competitions) for Newcastle - a penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Sun 18.05
Isak missed the 0-1 Premier League loss at Arsenal, Howe told the media that he'd had a scan on a groin problem and rest rather than surgery was forecast.

Sun 25.05
Isak played the entirety of a 0-1 Premier loss at home to Everton, Newcastle's season-ending fixture.

Tue 27.05
Isak withdrew from Sweden's squad for two games in June due to a minor injury, presumably groin.

Mon 14.07
Isak was part of the Newcastle party that flew to Austria for a week-long training camp.

Tue 15.07
The Athletic reported that Liverpool had made it know they were prepared to pay £120m for Isak.

Sat 19.07
Isak was absent as Newcastle faced Celtic; Eddie Howe told the media that he'd allowed him to leave the squad as he needed "more training time" but that he expected him to join the club's upcoming tour of Asia.

Mon 21.07
Isak trained away from the rest of the squad at Darsley Park but reportedly cut short the session.

(some sources claim this may have been on 22.07)

Tue 22.07 Newcastle reportedly switched targets to Brentford's Yoane Wissa, to augment (or replace) Isak.

Wed 23.07
Liverpool completed the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, a player Newcastle had attempted to sign to augment (or replace) Isak.

Thu 24.07 Isak wasn't on the plane to Singapore and multiple media outlets reported he'd "told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away from the club".

The Times wrote that Isak refused to accept improved terms and an extension to his current Newcastle contract, allegedly seeking £300k per week - an amount the club wouldn't be able to meet given their financial status.

Fri 25.07 The Guardian wrote that Isak had been offered a basic weekly wage of £600K by Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Sat 26.07 Howe met the media in Singapore and had no update on Isak's thigh injury but called it minimal and was still confident that he would remain a Newcastle player.

Sun 27.07
Newcastle lost 2-3 to Arsenal, Howe telling reporters there was "no chance" Isak would be in Korea.

Mon 28.07 Newcastle arrived in Korea without Isak.

Tue 29.07 Howe told the media that no bid had been received for Isak and he remained a Magpie.

Wed 30.07 Spanish media claimed that Isak was training alone in San Sebastian.

Fri 01.08 Liverpool bid claimed to be £120m rejected.

Mon 04.08 Isak returns to Darsley Park but is made to train separately from the rest of the senior squad.

Fri 08.08 Omitted from the squad for a home friendly against Espanyol, Howe told the media Isak was fit but made him unavailable for selection. No disciplinary action had been taken against him that he was aware of.

Sat 16.08 Isak wasn't involved in the Premier League season opener at Aston Villa, with travelling supporters airing "one greedy bastard" chants after full time.

Tue 19.08 Isak released a statement explaining his absence from the PFA awards ceremony, which included this:

"The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading."

Tue 19.08 NUFC released their own statement.

On This Day in History
28th August

Born Or Died:

1880 Jimmy Lindsay born, Stockton.
(1899-1900)

Full back who was a blacksmith by trade and began his career with Jarrow before making the switch to United as an amateur - where elder brother Billy was on professional terms.

Debuting in a 0-0 draw away to Glossop in April 1901, Jimmy kept his place for a 2-2 home draw with Stoke City the following week but was never called upon again.

Briefly moving on to Burnley, he would enjoy the longest and most successful period of his playing career after joining Bury in 1901.

Playing for the Shakers for the following nine seasons, Jimmy was part of the Bury side who hammered Derby County 6-0 in the 1903 FA Cup Final at the Crystal Palace.

His death was reported in 1925.

1964 Death of Jimmy Richardson, 53.
(1928-34 & 1937-38)

1994 Brandon Miele born, Dublin, Ireland.
(2010-14)

Central midfielder who joined United from the Cherry Orchard club in his native Dublin and was capped by the Republic of Ireland at youth international level.

Debuting for Newcastle reserves in January 2011 against Manchester United, Brandon made five appearances during the following season for the second string.

Sixteen further reserve outings followed in the 2012/13 season, netting against both Norwich City and Bolton Wanderers.

Miele was released towards the end of the 2013/14 campaign after only a handful of reserve outings, joining Leinster Senior League side Bluebell United in Dublin.

January 2015 then saw him join his local side Shamrock Rovers, playing alongside former Magpie Damien Duff following his arrival in July of that year.

He joined Dublin rivals St. Patrick's Athletic in December 2018 but in January 2020 Miele was banned from football for two years, failing to provide a sample following a game against Sligo Rovers in April 2019.

Miele left the ground without providing a sample, claiming he needed to be with his daughter who had fallen and hit her head.

After the tribunal he said:

"While I do not regret my decision to prioritise my daughter's health, I do regret that the effect this has had. Ultimately, I have to take responsibility for my actions that night but I do feel that I was placed in an impossible position.

"I believe that many people would have followed a similar course."

2023 saw Brandon restart his career at Leinster Senior League side Newtown Rangers in his native Dublin.

Keegan(60)
36,185
A perfect day in the sun with the centre of attention marking his debut with a second half winner - which he later claimed the crowd at the Gallowgate End (including a young Alan Shearer) sucked in.

There were debuts also for Jeff Clarke and the returning John Craggs, while Kevin Carr's pre -season accident in Madeira resulted in the reappearance of Steve Hardwick in goal.

Keegan was presented with a Newcastle scarf on the pitch by a gentleman clad in only a pair of fluorescent yellow socks as the house full signs were posted.

Referee Trelford Mills did nothing to provoke the SJP crowd this time, while England boss Bobby Robson was full of post-match platitudes when asked about KK - who he would drop from his squad just days later.

If anyone was left in any doubt about the effect of Keeganmania, QPR had won 4-0 at SJP barely three months before, in front of less than 11,000 bored souls.

Bobby Robson chose the same method as his predecessor to bring to an end his time in charge at Newcastle - by dropping Alan Shearer to the bench. And like with Ruud Gullit, it almost worked, with United going 2-1 up after being behind early on.

But Bobby's luck ran out with the score at 2-2. Craig Bellamy scampered in on goal and when ex-mackem Tommy Sorensen came out, the 'keeper handled outside of his box - an automatic red card but incredibly referee Mike Riley only gave a yellow.

From then on, we capitulated to a degree that was even extraordinary for Newcastle, leaving fans bemused and frustrated.

Not many were calling for Sir Bobby to get the chop but something had to give....

Two blunders from Jean-Alain Boumsong and another fitness farce cost us dear, despite a spirited performance against Fergie's tumbling Old Trafford clowns.

Debutant Albert Luque showed some promise but missed two decent chances and had another ruled out for offside but our plans were scuppered inside the first 37 minutes when Emre and Kieron Dyer limped off.

Rushed back ahead of schedule for this game, they both aggravated their hamstring problems - another Souness masterstroke.

And when Lee Bowyer limped off, we were reduced to fielding the creative non-entity that was Amdy Faye.

A second half brace from Leon Best saw Newcastle extend their unbeaten start to four league and cup games.

Playing their first league game since Joey Barton'S exit, Alan Pardew benched Demba Ba and went with a forward pairing of Best and Peter Lovenkrands.

Neither set the first half alight, but soon after the restart Best was on hand to tip home Yohan Cabaye's shot when it came back off the Gallowgate crossbar.

Ba then appeared as a substitute and eluded old boy Aaron Hughes with the pass that set up Best for his and our second goal.
