Cup Schemes x 3 -
one week remains

Sign-ups remain open for the three stand-alone home cup schemes available, allowing season ticket holders to guarantee entry to Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup fixtures at Gallowgate this coming season.

Enrolment must be complete by Friday week, June 27th at 5pm. That is a hard deadline with no exceptions.

Anyone struggling to opt in can contact NUFC via
0344 372 1892 from 10am until 5pm every weekday, but the ticket office in the Milburn Stand will only be open for personal callers this coming Wednesday from 10am to 5pm.

For anyone who doesn't sign up, there's no guarantee of any seat for a home tie in that competition and their sales window will open alongside that of club members.

Pricing for the two domestic cup competitions is unchanged from 2024/25 at £35 & £30 for home FA Cup ties and £25 & £20 for Carabao Cup games at SJP.

FA Cup and Carabao Cup payments will be taken within seven days of a home game being confirmed.

Champions League tickets cost £70 & £60, increasing from our last entrance in 2023/24 when they were £60 & £55.

Regardless of when United's Champions League home games are staged, payments will be taken for those tickets on the 1st day of July, August, September and October.

2025/26:
Villa (a)

Newcastle will begin their 2025/26 season against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday August 16th, with kick-off confirmed as 12.30pm for live UK TV (TNT Sports).

The first Tyne-wear derby league fixtures since 2015/16 take United to the dark place on or around December 13th, with the return at SJP on or around March 21st - a game that would be rescheduled should Eddie Howe's side make it to Wembley to defend the Carabao Cup.

The festive season will be played away from Tyneside, with successive trips to Manchester United and Burnley - note that the only "blackout" day announced by the PL is December 24th, meaning that fixtures are liable to be rescheduled to both December 26th and January 1st.

There's a Wednesday night London game against Spurs in February, but a further trio of midweek home fixtures.

Two Saturday home games are set to be pushed back to Sundays as a result of European scheduling: the visit of Nottingham Forest to SJP in October moving to Sunday 5th assuming that the visitors have progressed through their Conference playoff and are in action on Thursday 2nd.

Similarly, the home game against Aston Villa in January should move to Sunday 25th as the Villans will be in Europa League action the previous Thursday.

There's no clash with PL games on any FA Cup round weekend until the semi-finals, with the Quarter Finals on or around Saturday April 4th, which is the Easter weekend.

That follows an international break, meaning that there's a guaranteed 19 day period with no PL games as it stands.

The final home game against West Ham is scheduled on Sunday May 17th along with the rest of the PL games that weekend. Saturday May 16th is clear for the FA Cup Final.

The closing game of the season then takes the Magpies to Fulham on Sunday May 24th, Craven Cottage also the venue for our 38th and final PL game in 2019 and 2021.

United's visit to Everton is scheduled for the final weekend of November, with the Hill Dickinson Stadium the 61st venue to have staged a PL fixture involving the Magpies.

This will be the first time since 2020/21 that Newcastle have begun and ended a season away from home.

For the first time, all matches taking place outside of the Saturday 3pm "closed period" – a minimum of 267 games – will be broadcast live in the UK.

The increase in matches broadcast in the UK comes predominately from Sky Sports showing the fixtures displaced to the Sunday 2pm slot due to clubs’ participation in European competitions the previous week.

Sky Sports will show a minimum of 215 matches and TNT Sports will cover 52 matches.

Teen trio commit

Newcastle have agreed contract extensions with three 18 year-old players on the verge of the senior squad.

Full back Leo Shahar, winger Trevan Sanusi and forward Sean Neave have all put pen to paper on new deals of unspecified duration.

First professional contracts have been awarded to forward Joe Brayson and defensive duo Logan Watts and Luke Craggs, who are all 18 or reach that age imminently.

Elsewhere in the Academy, Sam Alabi, Michael Mills and Sam Pinnington have accepted scholarships and Thomas Bryant's scholarship is extended into a third year.

Update:
Coach departure

Newcastle confirmed on Monday that U21 lead coach Diarmuid O’Carroll had left Gallowgate in order to join the senior team coaching staff at Czechs Sparta Prague.

O'Carroll moved from his post as St. Mirren assistant manager in September 2024 to join the Magpies, combining that role with coaching the Northern Ireland national team.

The U21 lead coach role became vacant in July 2024 when Ben Dawson left to join Leicester City, Neil Winskill and Jack Ross taking interim charge until O'Carroll's appointment.

AA joins Tynesiders

National League side Gateshead confirm that former Magpie Alun Armstrong has become their new manager.

The 50 year-old came through the ranks at Gallowgate but left without making a senior competitive debut, appearing for the likes of Stockport County, Boro and Ipswich Town during his playing career.

Previously taking charge of Blyth Spartans and Darlington, Alan has been out of management since leaving the latter back in September 2023. More recently he became head of Elite and Performance Football at Gateshead College.

Giveaway:
Theatre
compo winner

Returning to Newcastle's Theatre Royal this weekend for three performances is "Carrying David", Ed Waugh's stage adaptation of boxer Glenn McCrory's autobiography.

The play recounts Durham-born McCrory's rise to fame in the ring and the inspiration he took from caring for his terminally ill brother, David.

"Carrying David" is on Saturday June 21st at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and Sunday June 22nd at 4pm. Tickets are available now online here

We had seats up for grabs and asked weight class Glenn McCrory was boxing in when he became World Champion during 1989. Most folks knew that it was Cruiserweight and the winning entry came from Steve McKenna.

Update:
Bill McKinney RIP

The death of former Magpie Bill McKinney has been announced, at the age of 88.

Wallsend-born Bill served his apprenticeship as a plater at Swan Hunter Shipyard, playing junior football for both Wallsend Rising Sun and Wallsend St. Lukes.

Completing his national service in the army, Bill was selected for their national XI and joined United during May 1956, playing for their "A" team initially.

Losing out to fellow new arrival Dick Keith in his first season at Gallowgate, Bill had to wait until December 1957 for a first team chance, stepping up from the reserves to play in a 3-3 draw away to Spurs.

Finally becoming a first team regular at right back in the 1960/61 relegation campaign, Bill played in both full back positions and at centre half as unsuccessful promotion challenges were mounted over the next three seasons.

Replaced by David Craig late in the 1963/64 season, Bill featured just twice more ahead of a £2,750 switch to Bournemouth in August 1965 - leaving Gallowgate with eight goals in 95 league and cup games.

Reunited with Dick Keith at Dean Court 1966 saw him join Third Division side Mansfield Town and he played on at Field Mill for another two seasons.

A move to Southern Premier League side Wellington Town (who later renamed themselves Telford United) followed, McKinney settling in the Shropshire town of Dawley and remained there after his retirement.

On This Day in History
20th June

Born Or Died:

1960 Death of Bill Bradley, 69

The Magpies goalkeeper who starred in the 1924 FA Cup Final win died suddenly, collapsing in the tobacconists that he ran next to North Shields railway station.

1965 Neil Redfearn born, Dewsbury.
(coach 2018,2019)

Having had a brief and low-key spell as Assistant U23 Coach in 2018, Redfearn returned to the club ahead of the 2019/20 season to take charge of the U23s.

Instead of joining his players at a Spanish training camp however, the departure of Rafa Benitez saw him drafted in with Ben Dawson to oversee the first team pre-season.

As a player, the midfielder had enjoyed a career in excess of 25 years since joining Nottingham Forest as a youngster and making a senior bow for Bolton Wanderers.

Spells at Lincoln City, Doncaster Rovers, Crystal Palace, Watford, Oldham Athletic, Barnsley, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City, Wigan Athletic, Halifax Town, Boston United and Rochdale then left him with almost 800 competitive senior appearances.

A player/manager role at Scarborough then followed before a brief tour of Northern non-league sides concluded at Salford City during 2008.

Having first taken charge of Halifax Town in a caretaker role in 2001, Redfearn managed Scarborough, Northwich Victoria and York City before joining Leeds United as a youth team coach in 2008.

That Elland Road association then saw him serve as caretaker boss in 2012,2013 and 2014 before eventually being given the post full time after the third stint.

Within a year though Neil had been axed, reappearing at Rotherham United before moving into women's football as head coach of Doncaster Rovers Belles and latterly Liverpool Women - although he resigned after just one competitive fixture.

That pattern continued when he left Newcastle in November 2019 after just a handful of games in charge of the U23s.

A return to coaching in the womens' game came at Sheffield United in 2020 - leaving in late 2022 following a poor run of results.

Redfearn returned to Oldham briefly in September 2023 before taking on a coaching role at Bradford City

Early 2025 saw Neil was appointed as Farsley Celtic manager but again that only lasted four matches before he resigned.

1987 Death of Andy Donaldson, 62.

A talented striker who was forced to leave the area to further his career following the emergence of Jackie Milburn.

What Else?

1924 The club's Annual General Meeting took place amid unrest from shareholders regarding the accounts presented.

Despite winning the FA Cup, the negative effect on gate receipts as a result of rescheduling league games to midweek was given as one factor.

It was also claimed that the FA were mulling over a proposal to switch cup ties to midweek after the First Round (now Third Round) rather than move league fixtures - something that would be adopted almost a century later.

1990
Newcastle skipper Roy Aitken led Scotland out of the World Cup, going down by a single goal to Brazil on a damp night at the Stadio Delle Alpi in Turin.

This was to be Aitken's 56th full cap for Scotland - six of which came while he was on our books.

He did make one further appearance the following year in a European Championship qualifier against Romania - by which time he had moved on to St. Mirren.

1998 Future United flop Silvio Maric made his debut in the World Cup Finals as a second half substitute against Japan in Nantes.

Croatia won 1-0 and Maric did enough in his 23 minutes of action to earn a starting place in the next group game, against Argentina.
