United won their opening game of a four team pre-season tournament played in Dublin, with both Shay Given and Temuri Ketsbaia making their first appearances for the club.

Tino Asprilla was absent on World Cup duty and Darren Peacock staying in England as a stomach tear healed, but Kenny Dalglish name Steve Howey after a ten month absence through injury:

United took to the field at Lansdowne Road after after Derry City had beaten Celtic 3-2, a game that was a troubled introduction for new Hoops boss Wim Jansen, with Parkhead predecessor Tommy Burns cheered by Celtic fans as he took his place in the dugout for new employers Newcastle.

Newcastle would come up against Dick Advocaat's side twice more that season, the Dutch registering home and away victories in the Champions League.
