A variety of ailments saw three Magpies sit this one out: Alan Shearer (back), John Beresford (calf) and David Batty (foot).

United easily won the Irish International Club Soccer Tournament at a damp Lansdowne Road on Wednesday night.

Irish part-timers Derry had beaten Celtic the previous day, but were out of their depth against Newcastle, who could have won by a greater margin.

Following Crawford's fortunate early strike, Les Ferdinand struck the goal frame twice before providing a knockdown for Peter Beardsley to double the lead.

A loss of concentration just before half time by United saw Pavel Srnicek pull off an outstanding block to prevent Liam Coyle from reducing the deficit with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

However the second half was a non-event in the driving rain and a sodden Magpies side were presented with silverware after the final whistle.
