We Said

Kenny:

"Considering the terrible start we had, I thought the team showed terrific character to hit back in such grand style.

"I rate Juventus as one of, if not the best, teams in Europe and if this game had been played in the context of a two-legged European competition, the result would have been all the more creditable.

"Tino played really well for the team, deserving his penalty and he took his second very well. He led the line showing all of his experience."

United supplied the opposition for this friendly staged in the Italian city of Cesena (over 200 miles away from Turin) as part of the Centenary celebrations for the Biaconerri, who wore shirts in their original colours of pink, meaning that the Magpies could play in black and white.

Goals from Ferrara and Inzaghi (2) could have been followed by many more but the reigning Serie A champions dropped the pace and allowed United to give the score a respectable look.

Already without Alan Shearer following the serious injury sustained against Chelsea the previous weekend, Des Hamilton left the field on a stretcher with a badly twisted ankle that saw him hospitalised when the squad returned to Newcastle.

United started the second half without a keeper, as half time substitute Pavel Srnicek ambled across the pitch towards goal, seemingly oblivious to the referee's whistle.

Tino Asprilla reduced the arrears from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box, before cracking home a late second. However there was no further scoring, meaning that the Italians lifted the Centenary Cup.
