We Said

Kenny Dalglish said:

"The game changed after the lad got sent off. We had most of the possession, but we didn't have quality from our crossing and in the box where it mattered.

"We're disappointed that we didn't get three points, but we're level on points with Man United and we're one ahead of Chelsea. If we finish the season like that we'll be happy."

Stats

There were competitive debuts for Dietmar Hamann and Laurent Charvet but neither Nolberto Solano or Stephane Guivarc'h made it into the matchday squad.

Waffle

A frustrating start to the season saw a refashioned Magpies side fail to break down the ten-man Addicks on their Premier League debut, despite the visitors playing with ten men for over an hour.

Richard Rufus was dismissed after 25 minutes by referee Dermot Gallacher for an elbow on Nicos Dabizas as Gary Speed shaped to take a corner; no penalty following as the ball wasn't "live".

Andy Hunt made his Charlton debut but a tactical replacement following that red card saw the former Newcastle striker replaced by defender Steve Brown.

The ploy of positioning Dabizas in a central midfield role failed to have the desired effect and he failed to return for the second half, replaced by John Barnes. He briefly threatened to provide a calming and creative influence, only to himself be forced off with a calf injury.

Temuri Ketsbaia's at least brought more bite to an attack that had been laboured thanks to the meagre efforts of Andreas Andersson, but the Georgian made and missed a gilt-edged chance to break the deadlock when leaving Eddie Youds in a heap but horribly slicing his shot wide.

A thoroughly inept display by United saw cheesed-off home fans switch their chants from "attack, attack, attack" to "what a load of rubbish" by the end, only Shay Given's acrobatic block denying Steve Brown from close range late on to preserve a point.
