With a growing clamour in the media and among fans for new faces to improve our lot, it seemed a perfect time to remember those for whom auld acquaintance was definitely best forgotten in 2000:
Crocked: Ferguson and Pistone (Everton), Maric (Porto) and Ketsbaia (Wolves)
Relegation dogfighters: Charvet and Howey, (Man City) and Dumas (Marseille)
Obscurity knocks: Elliott (Darlington), Fumaca (who knows, who cares), Perez (Cambridge) and Robinson (Wimbledon).
Robson has somehow managed to claw back over £17m for that lot, and few tears seem to have been shed over the departure of any of them.
Hopefully 2001 will see more cushy numbers come up.
