Now that the FA and the police have managed to mangle their most famous tournament into something resembling a TV game show, United travel to Villa knowing that a penalty shootout could yet decide their FA Cup fate.

No chance of a repeat of the four match marathon against Watford from a decade ago, but every possibility of our awful record of failure from the spot continuing.

Since we lost one on a bumpy Hungarian pitch in 1971 (Pecsi Dozsa),
we've had to endure three decades of penalty torture.

Home humiliations to Gullit's Chelsea and mighty Bournemouth sent St.James' crowds home in despair, while a ZDS loss at Tranmere,
following a 6-6 draw still rankles a decade on.

Of course, being Newcastle, shootouts in friendlies are no problem
(ie Boro and Man Utd.)
