United's stiffs left the field on Monday night having just secured a point against Man City's reserves. Not exactly headline news, perhaps.

Well, we couldn't help but notice that out of the eleven players that finished the game, five of them came from North of the border. Namely; The Caldwells - Steve and Gary, Brian Kerr, Ryan McGuffie and debutant Colin McMenamin. Not to mention coach Tommy Craig.

So where's the significance? Well, the last player to hold a major trophy aloft for the Toon was Perth- born, Scots captain, Bobby Moncur.

United's tradition of Caledonians goes way back, with names like Brennan, Mitchell and of course Gallacher.

Scotland may not be as exotic as South America but it has often provided the backbone for some of United's greatest sides. Long may it continue to do so.

Och aye the Toon.
