We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"I was really pleased with the performance on a pitch totally unfit for football.

"It was a shocking surface, like playing on Whitley Bay beach.

"The resolution they showed to deal with an atrocious pitch was commendable. The performance was very good and we just needed a break up front."

"Robbie Elliott played a lead role. His attitude was top class and Andy Griffin, David Cowan and Steve Caldwell dug in and made us hard to beat.

"This carried through the middle to the lads up front - Offiong and Michael Chopra - who ran their hearts out.

"There were seven players from the academy and it was a good mix of youth and experience.

"Everybody put a good shift in and while I'm disappointed we didn't get the win we were looking for I was pleased with the attitude and application.

"It's never easy to win against Manchester United."

Waffle

Our reserve side still have a chance of taking the title with three games remaining, after taking a point from a match played on a pitch utterly devoid of grass.

After a forgettable first half, Newcastle withstood a late rally from the home side, and although we again failed to score in this fixture, this was a vast improvement on the 0-3 and 0-4 routings of the last two seasons.

Andy Griffin and Michael Chopra were both booked in a better second half with the latter having our best chance - a header from a Stuey Green free-kick.

Man United had four late corners and Adam Collin made a good stop from the third of those as Manchester threatened to take three undeserved points.

It was the visitors who dominated the closing stages of the game without creating anything clearcut against an experienced defence including Wes Brown and David May.

Richard Offiong didn't have one of his better games, making his first reserves start and had LuaLua played we may have left with a precious win.

We remain second in the table behind new leaders Middlesbrough. Man United moved up to third ahead of Bolton on goal difference.
