The 12 month season is almost upon us, and even in years such as this when no championship finals come along to clog up the schedules and annoy armchair cricket fans, for some there's little respite.

Fresh from inking a new deal, Gary Speed is captaining Wales as they once
again slide out of World Cup contention while Aaron Hughes and Northern Ireland look set for a similar fate. Nobby's Peru have also now blown their hopes of reaching Japan after losing to Ecuador.

Still in with a chance of making those finals, The republic of Ireland press
on with Shay Given in goal, and newly promoted Andy O'Brien coming out of the U21's.

Of course most attention this week is focused on Athens, where a Dyer-less England take on resurgent Nicos Dabizas and the Greeks. Look out for old boy Georgiadis in the home side, a player for whom the Northumberland Senior Cup seemed a more appropriate stage than a
crucial World Cup qualifier.
