Our recent attempt to gatecrash the UEFA Cup via the Fairplay League may have come to nought, but this week we celebrate the anniversary of United's Fairs Cup victory in 1969, which began in similarly bizarre circumstances....

Thanks to a odd "one club per City" rule, United qualified for what later became the UEFA Cup despite their lowly 10th place finish in season 67-68.

Ten games later, having dealt with the likes of Feyenoord, we made the final. Facing us were Hungarian side Ujpesti Dozsa, dubbed "the best team in Europe" by Don Revie after beating his Leeds.

After a memorable first leg at home, a priceless 3-0 lead was gained, which came in handy as we struggled in at halftime 0-2 behind in the second leg.

Second half goals from Moncur, Arentoft and Foggon made it wor Cup on June 11th 1969, and thousands lined the streets to welcome the lads back home.

Unfortunately we've won nowt since....
