The Intertoto rollercoaster almost came off the rails in the champagne region of France as United survived a battering from Troyes in the first leg of the final.

We could have been sunk in more ways one as the torrential rain and waves of Troyes attacks threatened to dent our chances of a place in the UEFA cup. However, don't think that 0-0 is a good result in two-legged affairs.

Cast your mind back eleven years or so. A John Burridge penalty save and a last minute red card got us a 0-0 draw on "foreign" soil in the play-offs but the second leg went horribly wrong.

Do we sit back or attack in the second leg? Defending is a dangerous policy at home but Troyes seem useful playing on the break.

Some are saying that six games to get into the UEFA cup is an easy backdoor entry. Actually, it will be 44 games by my reckoning including 38 league games......
