So the European adventure finally came to an end in a goal-fest at St. James'. Was it worth the bother? "Learned" scribes seem to think not.
We will pay for it, apparently, later in the season when our limbs become
wearied by the mid-summer exertions. What a load of old tosh.
Whatever the outcome, pre-season was a thoroughly entertaining romp (for a change) with United bagging fifteen goals in the Intertoto.
Craig Bellamy scored on his home debut to take some pressure off his £6m
transfer. Ameobi and LuaLua gained some much-needed first team experience and the side gained a collective spirit that they took to Stamford Bridge.
We may not have sneaked into the UEFA Cup but at least our passports were aired for competitive matches, unlike wearside ones that still gather dust.
All in all a competition worth entering but Sunday's derby is now what matters.
