We Said

Tommy Craig commented:

"Calvin had shown a tremendous piece of skill to get past the first player and just as he knocked the ball past the second he was taken out."

"I was delighted with the performance. They had to dig deep to win against a good Blyth side.

"It was very difficult for us. It was never going to be a pretty game and they showed a lot of character.

"They hung on in there in the first half and took the game to them in the second half. Right up to the death it was difficult for us."

On a night that Ronaldo and Co. enthralled TV viewers, a hardy 523 fans turned up at Croft Park to be rewarded for their loyalty with a forgettable night's entertainment for all but the final seconds.

Then, with the scores tied at 1-1 and extra time looking an inevitability, a Newcastle break down the right flank through Webster and Finnegan led to Justin Keegan upending Calvin Zola in the area.

Referee Foster pointed to the spot and Calvin got up to convert the winner, shooting powerfully past 'keeper Phil Naisbett.

A veneer of respectability was then added to the score in added time, when Zola eluded Naisbett on the left hand edge of the Blyth area.

He chose to cross rather than attempt a shot at the goal from a narrow angle and  Guy's consequent knock-down presented Martin Brittain with the opportunity to seal the win thanks to a memorable volley.

Earlier, in a poor opening half, Blyth had taken the lead on 41 minutes. A hopeful  forward pass was misjudged by Steven Taylor, allowing Glen Robson to muscle into our box and Scott Emerson to shoot home from eight yards.

Our only real "chance"  had come on 14 minutes when a Lewis Guy lob from outside the area ended up on the roof of the net.

United equalised on 65 minutes after a quick Phil Cave throw-in down the left to Ross Gardner. He sent in a deep cross for Guy to control and finish with a low diagonal shot under the keeper from six yards.

As is often the way with these games, the non-league side began to run out of steam around about the hour mark, and United came to the fore in the final half hour, thanks partly to the movement of sub Zola and Brittain's service from the right flank.

Without the penalty award, extra time would probably have brought further reward for United against a Blyth side who had secured their league status only two days before.

As it was though, an angry Spartans boss (and toon academy coach) Paul Baker made his feelings known to the referee at the final whistle, the official leaving the pitch to jeers from the home fans.

Newcastle now face Whitley Bay in the final at a date, time and location to be confirmed.

PS - due to some changes from the numerical order the toon subs were written in on the teamsheet, the poor announcer cocked up our replacements, with the consequence that Ben Webster's arrival was announced as goalkeeper Ben Smith, while Calvin's penalty winner was proclaimed as being from Ben Webster!
