Newcastle bid farewell to their Academy Director Alan Irvine in appropriate fashion at St.James' Park on Monday, as victory over Manchester United gave the U17 side the League title.

An early 3-0 lead at Old Trafford in the first leg had raised hopes of an
easy win but a final score of 3-2 set things up for a close deciding tie.

Happily for the 6000 present, the young Magpies dominated throughout and scored twice without reply to lift the trophy.
A shot from the individually talented striker Calvin-Zola Makongo broke the
deadlock after halftime and local lad James Beaumont then chipped in with a
memorable effort to seal the tie and kick-start the celebrations.

Irvine now leaves to assist David Moyes at Everton, with Kenny Wharton being
promoted from within to replace him.

Given the quality on view in this game, "Bones" has a hard act to follow,
but for once our future looks bright.
