Iron coach Russ Wilcox said:

"I'm very pleased with that, I thought overall we deserved to win. I'm delighted with the season overall, we've had just three defeats in 21 games."

A listless opening 45 minutes by Newcastle's second-string at Glanford Park saw them go in at the break deservedly one goal behind.

The Iron broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, when former Norwich City youngster Paul Hayes (pictured) converted Calvo-Garcia's left wing cross at the second attempt, Bartlett having blocked his initial effort but handing the striker a close range tap-in from the rebound.

Seven minutes later the visitors made a change in midfield, with Bradley Orr replacing an off-the-pace Jamie McClen.

However the home side continued to dominate proceedings, looking sharper and invariably first to the ball, while our forwards barely featured.

A more equal second half saw Newcastle take the initiative within moments of the restart and it was no surprise when an equaliser came just before the hour mark.

Substitute Bradley Orr began the move with a pass out to the left flank that reached Alan O'Brien and when the Dublin-born winger crossed, Orr was on hand at the far post to nod home his fourth goal in the last three games at this level.

And Scunthorpe were grateful to their goalkeeper Adam Capp (not Andy, sadly) a minute later, when he foiled Peter Ramage's well-directed header.

The Magpies continued to shade it until an unfortunate intervention by our man of the match Steven Taylor handed the home side a winning strike on 70 minutes.

A right-wing cross by namesake Cleveland Taylor was played into the Newcastle area and in stretching to get a boot on it, Taylor succeeded only in diverting the ball past his own 'keeper from point-blank range.

That gave Scunny renewed impetus and the final 20 minutes of the game were just about even, neither side carving out any clear-cut chances to add to the score.

Of those players on show who have recently been selected for first team squads Chopra had a quiet night, Brittain again showed his prowess at free kicks, Taylor looked assured and Elliott got another ninety minutes under his belt to maintain a semblance of match fitness.

However there was a momentary injury scare for the last-named of those on 82 minutes when he appeared to be limping after a strong tackle with an opponent. Elliott though did stay on the field when substitutions were made moments later and completed the ninety minutes in no obvious discomfort.
