A second goal of the season by stand-in striker James Milner was enough to give United reserves a point from their trek to North Wales on Monday evening to face a strong Liverpool side.

A scoreless first half saw Milner and N'Zogbia come close for United, only to be denied by former Leeds 'keeper Scott Carson.

Meanwhile at the other end, Tony Caig was called into action on a number of occasions as Liverpool - with fit-again Harry Kewell leading the attack - gave our defence some anxious moments.

Kewell and his side gradually ran out of steam though after the break and within a minute of his substitution on the hour we were ahead, as a slack pass by Pelegrino gave Milner a shooting opportunity that he converted.

The same player then worked two more openings as the reds struggled, but saw one chipped effort pass just wide of the goal and was then robbed by a timely intervention from Warnock as he was about to shoot.

However for the fourth match in succession we were unable to hold a lead and conceded an equaliser with 8 minutes remaining when Le Tallec powerfully headed Partridge's left wing cross past Caig.

That's now just one defeat in seven for our second string, but with four of the last five games ending in draws there's still a lot of room for improvement.

Next up is a real test, as league leaders Aston Villa come to Kingston Park on Monday, having beaten us 3-0 at Villa Park earlier in the season and won on their last two visits to Tyneside.
