We said

A thoroughly dischuffed Lee Clark said:

"I am gobsmacked and embarrassed by the result.

"I am gutted and devastated by a performance which just is not acceptable to Newcastle United Football Club.

"It is something which has never been on the horizon since I took the job.

"I didn't see this coming from this group of young players.

"The same side went down to Wigan last week and made a good account of themselves against a strong team."

"We came up against a good Whitley Bay team and it is not like I did not tell the players what a good side Whitley were.

"We knew what problems Whitley could cause us so the players have no excuses about going into the game unaware of what might be happening.

"It is totally demoralising - but I will continue to work with this group of young players.

"Hopefully, the penny will drop and we can encourage them to go on from this."

"I hope they feel the same way as I do, though, because as coach I feel really embarrassed.

"We did better in the second half but, no disrespect to Whitley Bay, Newcastle United should not be having good spells in games like this - they should be dominating from start to finish and we did not.

"Whitley got what they deserved, a win, and we got what we deserved, which was nothing.

"There are no positives at all, it was just a bleak evening.

"The lads are in the second team and that is one level below the first team, which is what they are all aiming for.

"Performances like that are not acceptable."

"It was a tactical decision (to withdraw Bernard at half time) - it was something we felt we needed to do."

Waffle

Newcastle's second string meekly exited from the Northumberland Senior Cup at Kingston Park on Monday evening - beaten by a Bay side who looked sharper and hungrier despite their weekend FA Vase exertions.

Maybe it was the sight of our opponents appearing in an all red strip with white piping that brought back memories of previous exits in this competition at the hands of Bedlington.

Or perhaps it was Kevin Walton appearing off the bench for the visitors - a veteran of our last two defeats in this competition, both by the Terriers - in 2003/04 and 2004/05.

Whatever the reason, this was a uniformly poor United display and the deteriorating surface didn't hinder their opponents from moving the ball around and finding space.

A scrappy opening period saw the biggest cheer from a low crowd come when a punter in the seats stuck his head on a stray pass to good effect.

The Northern League side though fashioned the first real chance and took the lead on 17 minutes.

A rusty-looking Bernard was caught napping in midfield by Woodhouse and he released Kerr, who sped down the Bay right before angling a low cross to the far post for Phil Bell (pictured) to drive back past Fraser Forster.

That goal failed to lift Newcastle and it was the visitors who threatened again on 36 minutes - Bell using all of his six foot five inch height to get a head to a Wayne Phillips corner but direct it straight at Forster.

The nearest Newcastle came to a goal in the opening half came two minutes later when Phil Cave almost marked his return from injury with a goal, only for his 20 yard left-foot effort to be deflected for a corner that we promptly wasted.

By half time Glenn Roeder had disappeared from his seat in the stand and looked to have had some input to a re-modelled line up.

Both full backs failed to reappear - Cave returning to his former left back slot and Gate dropping to right back; Jonny Godsmark introduced to occupy a right wing slot and Mark Doninger taking a more central role.

A lack of options though meant that our makeshift central defensive duo of Lough and Cavener continued - and this was ultimately to prove our undoing.

Revamping the side almost brought an instant reward, as LuaLua zipped past his man on the halfway line and hared away down the left before releasing the ball to the unmarked Troisi.

A poor first touch saw his shooting chance disappear but the ball ran on to Godsmark who arrived at the back post, only to see his first touch of the ball blocked by the advancing Burke.

Thereafter we reverted to type, failing to make the best of our set pieces or LuaLua's space down the left and restricting ourselves to some wayward shooting.

We were handed a lifeline though on 75 minutes, Doninger crumpling under challenge on the edge of the area and referee Oliver pointing to the spot.

Matty Pattison fired the penalty low to Burke's left to put us back on level terms, but within five minutes we were behind again.

Former Newcastle reserve and junior midfielder Damon Robson curled a free kick into the centre of our area and amid a complete absence of marking, Bell again stooped to conquer and headed home to the delight of the Bay support.

We never looked like getting back into the tie again and it was the visitors who came closest to increasing their advantage in the final stages.

In games of this nature, the non-league side often lose out in terms of fitness in the last thirty minutes.

Credit is due to Whitley though tonight for their endurance - being revitalised by their second goal and thereafter never looking in real danger of losing.

For our trio of highly-rated young attackers  this was a night to forget - messrs Carroll, Troisi and LuaLua returning to Earth with a bump after the rarified air they've been breathing in recent months.

Whitley move a step closer to the trophy they last won in 2005, but have more pressing concerns in the shape of a League Cup tie at Consett in 48 hours time.

For most of the Magpies though, there's the chance to retain an interest in some other silverware with Saturday's FA Youth Cup tie at SJP against Millwall.

PS - Coming into this tie, our reserves had played precisely one competitive game in 56 days. Despite multiple postponements, their part-time opponents had managed eight.

It could be argued that this should have made them hungry for the ball - in reality most of them seemed to have forgotten what it was for....
