We Said

Adam Sadler commented:

“Stephen Carr was different class for us. For all the young players we played last night he demonstrated an example of how to do their jobs. The manager was there and Stephen got through the game, which we are delighted about.

“It was a real positive for Stephen.”

“Credit to the lads, they showed good character and their effort was fantastic. It was a difficult night for both teams. It made it difficult to move the ball around against a strong Sunderland side.

“They showed their class throughout the game and their experience was there.”

Goals from Republic of Ireland international Anthony Stokes in each half plus a late effort from sub Jamie Chandler gave a more experienced mackem side a deserved win at KP on Tuesday evening.

Our sole response came courtesy of an OG on 66 minutes, when Peter Hartley diverted the rebound from a Carr free kick into his own net.

The final stages of the contest were completed amid farcical conditions, with torrential rain and gale force winds making football impossible - not that there had been much before....

Newcastle had dominated the opening stages, with debutant Baheng keen to impress and Jonny Godsmark showing up well down the right flank on a pitch showing obvious signs of wear.

However Andy Carroll proved unable to mark his return to the side with a goal, despite getting twice contact on crosses in front of goal.

Stokes had already dragged two shots wide before he placed a low effort past a motionless Fraser Forster on 24 minutes, Greg Halford heading against the post from the restart.

And aside from Mark Doninger's blocked shot early in the second half it was one way traffic again until Stokes shot home via a post on 62 minutes after we'd twice failed to deal with the danger.

Hopes were raised when an OG halved the arrears but we failed to mount any sort of meaningful response and were grateful to a saving block from Edgar and a linesman's flag soon after for stopping the mackems increasing their lead.

A third arrived though on 83 minutes in similar style to the second and we also suffered an injury blow in added time when Doninger limped off after taking a blow on the knee.

We reached the halfway mark in the season with just one point from our last four games and two victories in the nine fixtures played so far - these are thin times for reserve watchers.
