We Said

Adam Sadler commented:

“Up until half-time I was delighted – we were the better team. But not only have we let in one sloppy goal, we have let in three.

“We have lost this game, but we have the chance to finish on a high against the same team next week in our final game of the league season.”

Having been rained off on their first visit to Northwich Victoria this season, Newcastle's reserve side returned to the non-league stadium and were promptly blown away by the tenants.

Andy Carroll, James Troisi, Ryan Donaldson and Fabio Zamblera were all absent due to international callups while Shola Ameobi diverted to link up on loan with Stoke City.

Winger Jonny Godsmark appeared though and celebrated his recent award of a professional contract by striking his sixth goal of the season nine minutes before the interval, converting from 12 yards out after James Marwood had mishit his shot, wrong footing the home defence.

However, the Red Devils hit back in the second half with three goals in just six minutes, Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck and Chris Eagles all beating Fraser Forster between the 55th and 60th minute.

Forster later did well to deny Welbeck a second, while at the other end Wesley Ngo Baheng shot wide when presented with a decent chance to net for the fourth consecutive reserve game.

For Adam Sadler's side there was a second 90 minute runout at this level for Peter Ramage as he returns from injury, while Lamine Diatta also appeared in his second game for the club, but showed little worthy of note.

The two sides meet again at SJP Next Monday for their last league fixture of the season, the Magpies in a mid-table spot and the Mancs odds-on to finish second, unless leaders Liverpool suffer a calamitous loss of form.
