Peter Beardsley managed four goals in the competition in his second spell with United, but wasn't on target at all in his first. Similarly, Mark McGhee was successful once after his return, but never when he first joined. However, Terry McDermott did the trick, with one goal in each of his two spells as a player with the club.

Kevin Keegan only scored one goal in this competition for Newcastle, away at Oxford.

Current backroom staff at St.James' who have scored for the club in this competition: Tommy Craig, Kenny Wharton, Paul Ferris.

Both Graeme Souness and Dean Saunders have won this competition as a player (for Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively) and have both netted in the final (one for Souness against Everton in the 1983/84 replay at Maine Road  and two for Saunders versus Man Utd at Wembley in 1993/94.)

In addition, the pair guided Blackburn to trophy success in this competition at Cardiff in season 2001/02.
