With no competitive fixture at the weekend, Scottish League Division Three side Berwick Rangers were in friendly action at their Shielfield Park ground on Friday evening against a Magpies XI.

The squad was pretty much the reserves one in action against Stoke City five days earlier, with the addition of youngsters Adam Armstrong, Ryan McKinnon, Jonathyn Quinn and a trialist forward identified by NUFC as Dan Rickard, although we know nothing else about him at all.

Newcastle went ahead after 11 minutes when Adam Campbell ran onto a Dennis Knight through ball and slotted home from 12 yards. The scores were level before half time though, when Berwick won a penalty for a foul by Lubo Satka on John Ferguson which was dispatched high into the roof of the net by Fraser McLaren.

Visiting custodian Jak Alnwick also made two decent stops from Kevin McDonald and McLaren but it was level at the break after a fairly quiet first half.

Rickard had the chance to get on the scoresheet at the start of the second period but shot straight at 'keeper Bajaoul from just five yards after being picked out by Michael Riley's cross.

Curtis Good then had a header hit a defender on the line and hit the crossbar before being cleared after 57 minutes and then Brad Inman was denied by a one-handed save after sharp control and a neat turn in the box.

Rangers took the lead in the 75th minute when substitute Lee Currie was played in by Kevin McDonald and shot across Alnwick from the left hand side of the area.

Inman again went close when a defender cleared a yard from the line and then the Australian shot narrowly wide from Campbell's cross.

In added time Campbell had a curling effort tipped over by the substitute Berwick 'keeper, Sandison and then Knight hit a long range shot go wide as the home side held out for the win, avenging their loss to Newcastle by the same scoreline on this ground 14 months previously.
