Newcastle reserves registered a first win in four games at Villa Park, ending Aston Villa's unbeaten start to the season in the process.

Second half strikes from Adam Campbell and Mehdi Abeid wrapped up the points, but the victory was overshadowed by injuries to both Dan Gosling and Haris Vuckic in the closing stages - the latter a severe-looking incident.

A slow start from both sides saw little of note until a 26th minute effort from Villa's Jordan Bowery that was correctly adjudged to be offside.

Things then started to pick up for the black and whites, with Conor Newton volleying just wide of the home goal after the ball fell to him from a half-cleared corner.

And United came even closer to an opening goal five minutes before the interval, when Haris Vuckic won a corner and then found Adam Campbell at the far post. Sadly though he nodded wide from point blank range.

The Magpies threatened again on 45 minutes when Mehdi Abeid was tripped in a central position outside the box but blasted the consequent free kick over the bar.

Dan Gosling then missed the goal by a similar distance in added time Campbell and Xisco created an opening. Yes, you did read that correctly....Xisco is in the team.

Our Spanish shirker was last spotted at this level back in January 2011 and hasn't been seen in our first team since Villa's visit to SJP in August 2010.

He was duly replaced on 58 minutes by Brad Inman, but before Xisco left he provided the pass from which Adam Campbell fired a low shot beyond Ben Siegrist from the right side of the box to register a fifth goal in six games.

Campbell then almost caught Siegrist napping with a snap shot from 20 yards, but the Villa 'keeper was able to grab it at the second attempt.

Villa - who were unbeaten in their four league games this season - then levelled slightly against the run of play through striker Graham Burke on 70 minutes.

However that parity only lasted for three minutes, before a Mehdi Abeid run and shot restored Newcastle's lead - the midfielder cutting in from the right flank and skirting across the edge of the box before finding the bottom corner of the net with a left footed effort.

United were forced into their second replacement of the evening when Dan Gosling was the victim of a strong challenge from Nathan Baker - the Villa man collecting a booking as Gosling departed on a stretcher.

A similar incident just moments later then saw Haris Vuckic depart on a stretcher, although the tackle this time looked rather more innocuous. Clearly in pain and having had a protective brace fitted on his left leg, he received oxygen as he was taken away.

Referee Neil Radford then played the indicated four minutes of added time - although eight would have been more accurate - before ending proceedings.
