While the first team were preparing for their big night out in Lisbon, Newcastle's second string took the field at the rather more modest surroundings of the Lancashire FA's county ground in Leyland on Thursday afternoon.

United made most of the early running and created chances for Alex Gilliead and Steven Logan, only for the youngsters to be denied by Trotters 'keeper Jay Lynch.

James Tavernier then tried his luck from distance but missed the target before fellow defender Lubo Satka could only direct his 43rd minute header against a post from inside the six yard box.

England youth international Gilliead then stuck the goal frame following the restart before Bolton went ahead when Chris Lester evaded Tavernier and centred for Jack Sampson to fire past Jak Alnwick in the United goal.

The Magpies recovered from that blow to equalise with seven minutes of the game remaining, Romain Amalfitano confidently dispatching his penalty kick to extend his side's unbeaten run to six games.
