Newcastle's
reserve side continued their preparations for their Premier League 2
opener away to Norwich City next week with a friendly victory over
Barnsley on Monday.
In perfect conditions, striker Tom Heardman marked his second game back
from long-term injury with an early goal, latching on to a misplaced pass,
rounding the 'keeper and tapping in.
The lead was then doubled on 35 minutes, as Gael Bigirimana robbed an
opponent near Barnsley's area and set up Sean Longstaff to calmly
side-foot home.
Back came the home side though and a fortunate deflection fell to striker
Jacob Brown, who duly converted from six yards in the 41st minute.
With Stuart Findlay partnering Curtis Good in central defence after the
break, Alex Gilliead then made way for Sammy Ameobi (pictured above)
playing his first game of pre-season.
The Tykes came close to a 51st minute leveller after Freddie Woodman
charged off his line but was beaten - only for Findlay make a timely
goal-line clearance.
Bigirimana and Sammy then combined well in the 66th minute to set Luke
Charman away and he finished confidently from close range for 3-1. Charman
twice came close to another, seeing one effort well saved before volleying
narrowly over.
Into the closing stages and Ameobi fired into the side netting before Dan
Ward rattled the crossbar with a curling effort from 20 yards out.
Barnsley were to have the final word though, Brown grabbing his second of
the afternoon on 89 minutes after a free kick into the box wasn't fully
cleared.
Thanks to GW
